I think the most significant contribution of Greek culture can't be just simplified down to just one thing. There are various contributors from Greek culture. You have the Olympics which was a type of competition that is done every four years. Teams from all over the world to compete in various events that pushes the competitors to the limit for the change to win a gold medal for their country. Another example of a significant contribution would be Greek mythology. Mythology is pretty ingrained in our culture, whether it's the old myths featuring likes of Hercules appearing in movies, comic books ,Video games ect. It's hard to have grown up without being at least a tiny bit familiar with Mythology. Lastly I feel like Democracy is one of the
The first of two notable periods of Greek immigration to the United States began in the 1800s and continued until the 1920s. According to chnm.gmu.edu (n.d.), the economic crisis in Greece caused many Greek families to send their sons to the United States to make money to send back home to Greece. The second wave of Greek immigration occurred after World War II with the passage of Immigration and National Origins Act of 1965. This opened the door for many Greeks who had family already living in the United States, to come join them. The second generation of Greek Americans had been established by this time and they had established Greek communities as well as various businesses that were thriving.
Greek Life is a very complex part of college campuses. While many schools have a strong Greek Life presence, others play a very small part on their campus. The same can be said when it comes to whether or not fraternities and sororities have a positive reputation or a negative reputation on campus and in their local media.
Do you ever how natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes came to be?Take a peak of greek mythology stories and one will learn. In greek mythology some important lessons are to listen to your parents, never lie to others, and listen to your elders.
Greek life plays a major role in colleges and universities all across the United States. Greek life allows men and women to join an organization and create a long lasting bond, as brothers or sisters, which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. College campuses explore and boast about the positive impacts that Greek life has on students as well as the community around them. However, even with fraternities and sororities being on college campuses for decades, few people outside the Greek life community have discovered the real, enduring process that it takes to become a "brother" or "sister". Throughout my research, I will be focusing on the negative effects that fraternities and sororities pose upon pledges. This includes hazing
Religion in Ancient Greece “ It’s believed that the first Ancient Greek civilizations were formed nearly 4,000 years ago.” (“10 facts about the Ancient Greeks”). The importance of this fact is to show how old the Ancient Greek civilization is and how long Ancient Greek religion dates back to. In the Ancient Greek times, religion was a significant part of their everyday life.
“Greek civilization is alive; it moves in every breath of mind that we breathe; so much of it remains that none of us in one lifetime could absorb it all.” Ancient Greeks are known to be one of the greatest and most advanced people and have left behind a legacy that helped define the Western civilization. Cultural diffusion helped spread Greek culture all over the world, and its effects can still be felt today in almost every aspect. Greek culture has greatly affected different parts of my daily life including architecture, food, government, inventions, music, religion, and education.
Ancient Greece was one of the most successful and monumental ancient civilizations. From the Mycenaean’s all the way to Alexander the Great, the Greek civilizations thrived. The Greek civilizations were a major time period in history that have been studied extensively. Therefore, it is essential to study the historical figures that greatly impacted the Greeks way of life. Greek government, philosophy, and military initiatives were greatly impacted by historical figures such as Socrates, Pericles, and Alexander the Great. Socrates made a profound impact on the study of philosophy by his teachings. Pericles and his ideas of imperialism and democracy were unheard of for this time period. Lastly, Alexander the Great built a massive empire from his powerful military skills. Studying these historical figures will reveal the profound impact on Greek culture, success, and ideas still appreciated today.
Culture in a community is what sets them apart from other communities. Even if there’s only a small difference it still affects them differently. Culture varies depending on entertainment, couture, cuisine, and history. Japan has a very broad and extensive culture which is fascinating.
Another function a myth must meet is in explaining day to day functions. There are so many things that happen daily that people do not question why it happens. Some examples are the sun rising and setting, seasons, fire, games, etc. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Norse had myths that helped explain some of these things. The Egyptians really wanted to figure out how the earth worked. Many of their myths deal with animals or why the earth is the way it is. They also tried to figure out the universe. They had a myth about why the sun revolved around the earth (they believed that the sun revolved around the earth, not that the earth revolves around the sun).
The animals of mythology are mysterious and captivating, their mystical traits seemingly impossible for an ordinary being, but despite their improbability, we continue using them in modern day movies and stories. The three mythological animals that you see most frequently in fiction are the dragon, the unicorn, and the phoenix, and that is why I will inform you about their appearance, origin, and abilities. Firstly, Dragons are an incredibly ubiquitous mythological animal, being found in folklore from around the globe, they are typically snakelike and bat-winged, with the ability to breath fire and fly; the dragon most likely was derived from the fears of fire, bats, and snakes. Moreover, The white-pelted unicorn
Some rules that the Greek culture follows are that before proposing, the man has to ask the woman's father for her hand in marriage. Both the bride and groom’s family gives presents to the bride and groom. Like in the United States, couples exchange wedding rings/bands that are worn on the ring finger of the left hand.
The Greek culture is a culture that I have always found very interesting because of the way it has evolved. The Greeks are very proud of their culture and they speak of their country with an intense passion. There are many things that are a major part of the Greek culture such as: religion, music, language, food, wines, and traditions (“History of Greece”). There are many factors that play a role in the creation of the Greek culture such as: religion, culture, history, and others.
Many have called Greece the birthplace of the modern world, for so many of today’s lifestyles and governmental patterns have stayed the test of time and even been copied by many nations including America, thus proving the greatness of Greek culture and how much they meant for the modern world. But why are we traveling to Ancient Greek you may ask out of the many powerful nations of the ancient world? What makes their civilization more unique than that or Rome and , or the Egyptians with their mummies and pyramids or the Persians for another? Well, while you could argue which civilization made the most important contributions to humanity, it is important to note that much of Roman culture came out of Greek culture, and lots of things in society
Several unique geographical features that impacted Greece’s developing civilization. These factors were rough mountains, nutrient deprived, hard soil, and several seas. The most important sea to the ancient Grecians was The Mediterranean Sea. Securing trade routes along the Mediterranean enabled them access to items they did not grow or produce in Greece. The ease of growing grapes for wine and olives allowed them to trade wine and olives along the Mediterranean Sea.
The Romans explored, encountered, and exchanged cultural ideas, art forms and conventions, religious ideas, and inventions with the Greeks. Because the Romans explored further and encountered the Greeks, Greco-Roman culture was eventually formed. The exploration and trade between different societies is imperative to cultural growth, and the Romans are an example of a society that achieved just that.
