Volcanoes were one of the most bizarre and unexplained mysteries to the early Greeks and Romans. The Roman god of the smith and fire, Vulcan was said to be responsible for the frequent eruptions of smoke and lava pouring for the mountaintop. This is because Vulcan was believed to have utilized the mountains as chimneys for his forges. Although Vulcan, or Hephaestus as the Greeks called him, could work for all his forges simultaneously, he also had many workers for his scattered among the workshops.
