In Greco-Roman Culture, humans imagine the deities of mythology to be and act certain ways, due to the needs they must fill. People invented certain deities for reasons that align with what they needed from them. To examine how a deity has a certain purpose, one must first examine what they are like. Athena and Ares are examples of deities invented for very specific purposes. One must first look at Athena and Ares’ similarities and differences in relation to their characteristics, their sexuality and physical appearances, as well as their different powers and how they are worshipped, to discover why they were created.

He’s not afraid of any Gods. That’s where it revealed Cyclops personality and perspective. We can see it by reason of “ Zeus.” He was known as the ruler of the Olympian Gods. He’s the most powerful gods in their culture. But, he compares Zeus’s thundering matching with a whistling. So, it provided the effects of hyperbole. In “ But in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor, then he dismembered them and made his meal…..” (13-15) This quote revealed the monster’s personality is that they are so powerful and almighty. The effects of imagery illuminates the conflicts among them as a result of monster’s personality, this means war to them, but Odysseus and his people are not his opponents. Due to the use of simile give us a sense that how strong they are. “Two men in his hands are like puppies.” (13) “ Then he dismembered them and made his meal…..”(15) This quote revealed monster’s characterization by saying he dismembered them. It gave us a sense of monsters are not the people you should mess with. The characteristic of them is always uncivil and

A hazard can be define as something which poses a level of threat the life, health, property or environment, a volcano can compromise all these things through the many hazards volcanoes presents. Such as lahars, flash flooding, landslides, pyroclastic flows, ash clouds and many others. There are factors which can influence the severity of the hazard and cause differences in them and can be classified into different categories, such as physical, economic, political and social.

Polyphemus believes himself and his fellow cyclops to be stronger than the Gods. When he states that “We Cyclopes care not a whistle for your thundering Zeus or all the gods in bliss; we have more force by far” (Homer 45). It is in this opposing action that Odysseus is stupefied. Odysseus just threatened the beast with the wrath of Zeus and instead of fear, Polyphemus is resentful towards the Gods and shows no fear. The surprise is only amplified by the realization that killing Polyphemus would only entrap Odysseus and his men. Polyphemus had sealed the doorway with a slab of stone that would take many men and horses to move. Odysseus realized the societal contrast between the Greeks, who kept the upmost respect for the Gods, and the will of the Gods, and the Cyclopes’ society that lack any acknowledgment of the Gods. The lawlessness of the Cyclopes’ home is unwieldy compared to the strict rule laid out for the citizens of Greece to follow. Opposed to the confines of Greece, the Cyclops Polyphemus is a lawless shepherd that does as he pleases without fear of reprehension from the Gods or his lack of official government. Vulcan continued his work, but ran on an errand back to Mount Olympus to get some supplies that he was storing for this occasion. On the top of the mountain, he could see all. Volcanic eruptions are a constant issue. There are around 50 -70 eruptions every year with some volcanoes erupting more than once. Around 35 people die every year from volcanic eruptions along with an average cost of damage of 98,992,000. I believe that with a little math that these numbers can go down. Issues with volcano causing so much death is more of the debris that comes out of it if we could estimate the distant that this debris could travel then we would simply need to change the areas that we build cities and how far we would need to evacuate in a sudden emergency. This will include the ideas of projectile motion, angular projectile motion, Geometrical estimations. For this example, I will be using the volcano Mount Vesuvius. This volcano is known best for the destruction of Pompeii and villages that surrounded it. This eruption works the best due to the easily known eruption and the easily measurable distances from Pompeii to the center of Mount Vesuvius.

In the New York Times article “ A Volcanic Eruption That Reverberates 200 Years Later,” William J. Broad discusses how the volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora, “the most powerful eruption in recorded history” (Broad) played a role in icy weather, agricultural collapse, global and pandemic and even gave rise to celebrated monsters.” (Broad) In April of 1815, Mount Tambora, located in modern day Indonesia, erupted killing tens of thousands of innocent people. As a result of this eruption, “investigators found that the giant cloud of miniscule particles spread around the globe, blocked sunlight and produced three years of planetary cooling.” (Broad) Moreover, the “planetary effects [were] so extreme that many nations and communities sustained waves of famine, disease, civil unrest, and economic decline.” (Broad) In other words, there was a distorted pattern of weather that lasted approximately three years; thus ensuing cold weather, darkness, and even blizzards directly affecting the growth of crops which led to more loss of life. In particular, the summer of 1816 also known as “the year without a summer,” is credited for not only “paintings of fiery sunsets and tempestuous skies,” but also the birth of Mary Shelley 's Frankenstein; or The Modern Prometheus. Furthermore, it is this very freakish event of nature that sets the tone for the theme of nature in Frankenstein. Nature, as the setting to create, nature that soothes, and nature that destructs.

Many cultures created different myths that try to explain the reality of volcanoes. The English word volcano is derived from the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. The Greeks later defined Vulcan as the Greek God, Hephaestus. The myth states that Hephaestus was skilled in the art of blacksmithing and metalwork. The Greeks believed his workshop was beneath volcanoes such as Etna in Sicily. The sparks and flames that arose from the volcanoes were thought to be Hephaestus forging weapons for the Olympians. (Daly 122) In the Chinese culture dragons are worshiped and feared. According to Chinese mythology, Fucanglong, the dragon of hidden treasures, lives in the underground and guards the treasures of the earth. It is said that a volcano would erupt when Fucanglong sprung from the earth to the heavens to report on the status of his treasures. (Rosen 63)
