In the book of Beowulf, he has three big monsters to kill. Using different methods, techniques, and weapons to win different “trophies” each time. One of the big monsters is Grendel, the man eating monster. Next there is Grendel’s mother, a great Sea monster. Finally the biggest fight, the Great Dragon. In each battle Beowulf kills each monster in different ways, but the way he kills them shows how great of a warrior/hero Beowulf actually is. In the fight with Grendel Beowulf says that he will kill Grendel using only his hands, because Grendel only fights with his hands. Beowulf wants to do that to show a point saying that he is the best at what he does and he’s not afraid of anything. After Beowulf defeats Grendel and frees Herot of grief, he rips Grendel’s arm off and hangs it up in the rafters, so everyone can see that Beowulf defeated their biggest enemy at his own game. After defeating Grendel, Grendel’s mother gets angry because the people have killed her son. …show more content…
But there is one last final task that he has to overcome. Battle the great dragon who is angry because a thief has stolen a golden cup from the dragon’s lair. Beowulf then gears up with eleven men to go and defeat this monster and the victory over his greatest feat ever. The Great Dragon had been Beowulf’s fear for many years. The dragon had been very angry because someone stole his jeweled golden cup. Beowulf wasn’t sure if he could do it on his own and that’s why he brought his men with him. Eleven of them took the journey with him to go and defeat the Great Dragon. During the efforts of trying to kill the Dragon they finally were able to do defeat him. They killed the Great Dragon with a sword. After the dragon was defeated something horrible had happened, Beowulf died
Although Beowulf had the strength of thirty men put together but he still took the men to battle with him. No armor or weapons could hurt him so he defeated Grendel with his two bare hands by ripping off his shoulder. Grendel hurt and dying then retreated to his lair to die. He then later takes on Grendel’s mother by chopping off her head with a great big sword hanging on the wall. It was made by giants and no man’s strength can carry it except the Great Beowulf. He willingly went against a creature that no man could ever defeat so the Danish people could live fearless from the undefeatable Grendel. He was praised for the great deeds he had accomplished. Beowulf later on became a great King after his uncle Hygelac died. Hygelac had a son but he was too young to rule the kingdom. Beowulf didn’t take the throne at first and said he would monitor the young boy and protect him.
Beowulf faces the internal conflicts, self concern and betrayal, when he is much older and king. Even though he was much older he decided to battle a fire dragon because he was his people’s hero. Though Beowulf had helped so many people when he was young and strong, none of his comrades came to help him. Instead, they ran for their lives. “And only one of them remained, stood there, miserable, remembering as a good man must, what kinship should mean.” (Beowulf 43) Beowulf and his one comrade, Wiglaf, kill the dragon, but Beowulf is injured and soon dies. The last internal conflict Beowulf has before he dies is the betrayal of his people.
The poem Beowulf includes three battles where Beowulf has to defeat the monsters known as Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Although he is successful in defeating the three monsters, his preparation for fighting them, his motivation for going into battle, and the conclusions of the battles demonstrate similarities and differences.
Beowulf’s courage is called once again, and this is the final battle. In this battle, Beowulf has to defeat a fire breathing dragon, symbolizing Satan. First of all, Beowulf is very old at this point. Once he heard about his home being destroyed, he left to fight the beast right away. “Then Beowulf was given bad news,/ a hard truth: his own home,/ the best of buildings, had been burnt to a cinder”(2324-2326). This shows how couragous Beowulf really is. Beowulf is a very old man at this point and his courage is too big and he has to defeat this monster for himself for destroying his home. Secondly, Beowulf fights the dragon on his own. In the poem the dragon is to be symbolized as Satan and he is ready to fight. “The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/ trusted his own strength entirely/and went under the crag” (2540-2545). Last of all, Beowulf is fighting the dragon and is nearly dead, Wiglaf had enough courage to come help. Beowulf and Wiglaf were able to defeat the dragon. “The noble son of Weohstan/ saw the king in danger at
The defeat of Grendal’s mother and the conquering of her land, gave Beowulf another challenge, the dragon. Beowulf mission ahead was to face the dragon. On page 64 it states: “By this there went inside a certain man[ who made his way near to the heathen hoard; his hand took a cup, large, a shining treasure. The dragon did not afterwards conceal it though in his sleep he was tricked by the craft of the thief. The people discovered the neighboring folk- that he was swollen with rage” (Beowulf 64). The quote showed a man who lived in the village stealing a golden cup with gold coins in it from the dragon. The dragon discovered the cup was stolen and terrorized and killed the people within the city. Beowulf aware he was an older man knew there was a possibility that he could die in battle. He was also aware he had to defend his city from the dragon. The dragon however, was able to get the upper hand, and burned down Beowulf’s house. Beowulf at this point did not hesitation to challenge the dragon. Beowulf entered into battle with the dragon, however, he embarked on some difficulties . His sword snapped; while in battle with the dragon, and fortunately, his friend Wiglaf came to his aid. Together they managed to kill the dragon, however, during the fight; the dragon wounded Beowulf.
The last battle that Beowulf partook in was perhaps the most heroic of all. Although the battle ended his life, it proved that of all the men in the story, Beowulf was the only true Anglo-Saxon hero. All of his troops proved to be fickle. They abandoned him in a time when they were needed the most. Though his men lived, they lived as cowards, yielding to the dragon apprehended by all the Geats. Never the less, Beowulf’s strength of heart and mind gave him the will to fight the dragon, although none of his men were there to help him. In this part of the tale, Beowulf was older and his physical strength had dwindled. But despite this, his tremendous heroism remained. He fought the dragon to his death and died with a pride, gallantry and chivalry that no man at the time had
Beowulf could not defeat the dragon on his own and received help from that ancient sword of Grendel’s mother and a loyal warrior named Wiglaf. Beowulf could not win this battle as he grew weak after the dragon bit into his flesh. As Beowulf was close to death, the dragon passed sooner than him. When the hero finally took his last breath, Wiglaf ordered the kingdom to bury all of the found treasure with Beowulf in order to show their mournfulness and regret for not being able to save their King. The treasure was burned with Beowulf’s body in order to prevent those full of greed from taking the treasure and distributing it unfairly causing abuse and imbalance of power by those who did not deserve that treasure in the first
After fifty years of what seems to be peace, the dragon appears to reign terror on Beowulf’s kingdom that he has taken power of. A robber had taken the dragon’s treasure that it was peacefully protecting prior to its terror. By this time, Beowulf is around ninety years of age. He knows it will be a tough fight, and therefore brings warriors along with him. After he calls the fierce dragon out of its cave, all but one of the warriors flee the scene. It is only Beowulf and a man named Wiglaf “Watching Beowulf, he could see How his king was suffering, burning. Remembering Everything his lord and cousin had given him,Armor and gold and the great estates Wexstan’s family enjoyed, Wiglaf’s Mind was made up”(Beowulf 107). Together, they slay the dragon, but Beowulf dies at the end too, making Wiglaf the king. The dragon was protecting the treasure and the thief did not steal for his own desire, it was for his masters in which he was beaten by “But the thief had not come to steal; he stole, And roused the dragon, not from desire But need, He was someone’s slave, had
Beowulf’s triumphs are short lived due to another attack on Herot. This time, Grendel’s mother comes to the great mead hall to avenge her son. The battle between Grendel’s mother and Beowulf differs greatly from the previous battle with the beast’s son. After another attack, Beowulf now must seek out his new enemy, and fight her on her own turf. As it stood, the scores were even between the monsters and the Danes, but Beowulf now looked for victory over the monsters, not revenge. Beowulf also had to regain his reputation. He had just won a trophy, when the bigger, badder bully came up to him and took it straight from his grasp. Now Beowulf traveled to the burning lake, which proved a test of its own. He then swam to the bottom of the lake where the monster resided. All of this just to get to the monster shows that this brave hero would do anything to set the scores right for his people and for the glory that came with it.
In the epic of Beowulf, Beowulf is needed by king Hrothgar to fight three different monsters that terrorize Herot. In the epic Beowulf fights of the three demon monsters Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and a fire breathing dragon. Beowulf has to result in defeating the monsters with different tools, tactics and strategies as they are different from one another. Beowulf organizes a group of the finest soldiers in all the realm to fight these different demon spawns, as he defeats the monsters he takes a trophy from each of them as a sign of victory. He takes the arm of the all mighty Grendel, after he defeats Grendel’s mom he takes Grendel’s head, and he takes all of the precious metals and gems from the dragon to his death. When he fights the dragon
Beowulf’s last test of courage comes in his old age when his people are threatened by a “mighty” dragon. Beowulf felt as if something he had done had caused the irascible beast to wreck havoc on his people, “killing and destroying” them and their homes with its “molten” breath. Knowing what had to be done, Beowulf bravely faced the dragon, while all of his people, except for one, fled in fear. His last battle, which ended in death, displayed Beowulf’s unwavering courage, the type that every hero should possess.
The monsters in Beowulf are very unique. Two out of the three of them are almost human. One was a dragon. However regardless of what they were they fell by one man. Beowulf. Let’s analyze their characteristics, weapons, and various other techniques at their disposal. The first on my list of creatures is Grendel.
When Beowulf came back to Geatland, he gave all the treasures he earned to his king Higlac and asked him to distribute it among his people, exhibiting generosity. Few days later, in his old age and state of weakness, Beowulf had to face the dragon, another evil figure. The dragon was more powerful and stronger than other monsters Beowulf had encountered in the past. This was evident when the dragon began to destroy the city by “vomiting fire and smoke” (Raffel 2312). His anger ignited when the runaway slave stole his goblet. When the slave accidently took shelter under the dragon’s cave, located underground, he stole the goblet with a positive intent of pleasing his master. However, this event enraged the dragon and erupted more greed towards his own treasures. He started becoming insecure and more possessive about his treasures and began to destroy the city. Thereafter, Beowulf came in and fought against the dragon with the motive of gaining fame and immortality, along with suppressing the feelings of his personal
kingdom is threatened by a dragon. Beowulf challenges the dragon alone and he is mortally
The dragon starts attacking Beowulf’s kingdom because a slave had stumbled into his lair and stolen a golden horn from his hoard of gold and treasure. Beowulf is old but he still gears up to fight the dragon and gathers up his best warriors and heads for the dragon’s lair. Most of
