Instead, Phil used the never ending February 2 to his advantage and patiently get to know Rita more which he never did before this incident happened because all he cared about was himself. Although committing suicide is completely unacceptable, it is not a surprise if Phil attempted to end his life and he was very determined to. Phil tried various ways from driving a car down a deep mining site to electrifying himself. This explains that Phil would do anything to get what he wants and as he get to know more about Rita, he was secretly falling for her and Rita was not the kind of woman that would easily fall for a guy as she was only interested in a serious and long lasting relationship. This was shown in the movie when he approached a stranger named Nancy and proceeded to ask personal questions about herself so that he can use the answers the very next day to get the chance of sleeping with Nancy. He then managed to sleep with Nancy and definitely deceived her when she asked whether this was just a one-night stand, and he simply replied “On the contrary Nancy. I love you” This shows Phil’s selfish side because he was using Nancy just for his advantage and treated her like an

At the middle of the novel, Phillip responds with carelessness when he jumped up to see the cay and fell in the water. For instance, “I went under the water, yelling for him, then came up, gasping. I heard a splash and knew he was in the water too.” (Taylor, 52) This shows that he could not get back up into the raft by himself. At the end of the novel, Phillip responds with bravery when he said he was one day going to sail the seas and find the cay that he was once on. The text stated, “Someday, I’ll charter a schooner out of Panama and explore the Devil’s Mouth. I hope to find the lonely little island where Timothy is buried.” (Taylor, 137) This shows that Phillip is now brave enough to go out and explore on his
I knew it was not a manly thing to do, something my father would have frowned on, but I couldn’t stop.” (Taylor 65) The tears are significant because they show how he has not changed completely yet, he continues to act childish. Self-pity is also a sign of immaturity, Phillip is still too scared to do anything to help himself. Recognizing that he is not being “manly” is one step closer to maturity, but his fear continues to hold him

When he drunkenly backhands Ms. Wilson for repeating Daisy’s name, his actions show that he respects Daisy more than her. This means that the affair is a result of his selfishness, not any fault of Daisy. Alcohol brings out the same selfish attitude again when he talks to Nick about the superiority of the Nordic race. Nick even notes that “There was something pathetic in his concentration, as if his complacency, more acute than old, was not enough to him anymore.” His drinking induces the same need for affirmation when he immediately tries to convince Mr. Wilson that it wasn’t his car that killed Myrtle despite knowing otherwise.
