In Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Ifemelu an African immigrant from Nigeria experiences the reality of what the “American Dream” truly is like for an immigrant. Adichie uses her character's life as to show how race affects her in America. Ifemelu moved to the United States with the illustration that she would easily be able to get a job, go to school, find love and be able to send money home in Nigeria. Instead, she was faced with many obstacles like racism. Racism is one of the major social issues of the modern world. It affects millions of people worldwide and is one of the deepest social problems in the United States.

In Spite of the devastating history of segregation in the United States. A lot has changed in the past fifty years since segregation ended. The United States shifted from arresting African Americans for using “white only” facilities to integrated schools all over the country. Influential individuals such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr helped pave the way for African Americans to live as equals to along with their white counterparts in the United States of America.

The book says and it makes sense to an extent that people of lower social status have in general poorer health and higher mortality rate. Beyond that it makes a whole lot more sense that there are numerous and annoyingly complex factors that can lead up to the poorer health that relates to lower status. The book also talks about race, which really goes and links itself with the social status parts, since in America (which is what/where they mentioned) there is a moderate alignment of race to social status. Now when bringing up higher socioeconomic status that doesn't necessarily mean a person will live longer, regardless of race, but it certainly helps. Now to start the rant of the annoying and complex events that relate to social status. When

The Progressive Era was a time when a group of people especially men suffered from the events of their time, but not through a shrinkage of what they needed, but because of the distribution of deference as well as the ability to obtaining power (Scott, 1959). The Era also started to the issues of child labor, the exploration of women as well as children that were within the industry, there was not any type of security in place for the old, nor was there anything in place for the people with illnesses (Scott, 1959). Unfortunately, still to this day many people cannot wrap their heads around the fact that slavery was abolished in the middle 1800s but yet there is still significant amounts of racial inequality and discrimination. Although it might seem far-fetched, we have the power to end racism. Despite our prejudice and disregard, racism can be significantly impacted and possibly even terminated with unity, partnership and cooperation amongst the people. Still to this day people of color are often faced with various disadvantages that can severely impact their quality of life, disadvantages such as poverty, education, and financial decisions.
