As stated in the text book, some of the examples of groups and challenges that law enforcement face on a daily basis are when dealing with children, the mentally ill, drug trade, gangs, and those who commit domestic abuse (Schmalleger & Worrall, 2009). The reason why these problems are challenging are that due to the special situations that each problem pertains, methods such as traditional routine incident response, and preventive patrol would fail because each require different tactics to combat each problem. With children there are a variety of ways law enforcement might have to handle kids which would include when children are in need of help, troublemakers, status offenders, and actual violent offenders, all require different measures
Law Enforcement officers have one of the most critical jobs in the United States. Their lives are always on the line and they are of high regards. This means they cannot fail! The results of their jobs do not only depend on their actions but also on the people. What this means is the community has a huge role when it comes to solving crime. Though many people may not believe it, they are the key to a successful crime prevention community. The people of the United States don’t really understand both the positive and negative effects that community policing actually brings. Some may say it is very dangerous based on their experiences. Others may say it’s the best way to do away with crime. Today the two will be compared and put to test by true officers serving our country. The facts will be stated and questions will be answered. Let’s take a look at what community policing is really all about!
Community relation issues across the nation have been increasing and causing many conflicts between law enforcement and communities. There has been so much disorder between communities and law enforcements not agreeing on how situation have been handled. Both the community and law enforcements having different perspectives on making decisions without ever looking at the others side and acknowledging each other’s reasoning behind their actions. Racism, responsibility and morals are some of many terms that are yet to be sorted out within all these communities that have on going conflicts. The relationships between a community and its law enforcement is important, although it is the police job to enforce, it is also the communities job to enforce all day and everyday (Russell).
Kappeler, Sluder, & Alpert (1998) explain that through the police subculture deviance enters into law enforcement. The police character that is developed can be attributed to several paradigms such as psychological, sociological, and anthropological. The individual personalities of an officer and the authoritarian personality, characterized by cynicism, aggression, and conservatism, is that the psychological paradigm analyzes (p. 85). The socialization process which officers experience when they go through the academy, training, and field experience, contrast that dispositional model of the police personality, and this is the focus of the sociological paradigm. When officers internalize these norms and values that are learned, this professionalization occurs. The occupational culture of policing and the -beliefs, attitudes, and values that make up the subculture is seen as the anthropological paradigm or the culturalization perspective (Kappeler, Sluder, & Alpert, 1998, p. 87-88).

difficulty getting their lives back on track. Too often, our police use excessive force, fail to
Many different types of police agencies exist in the United States of America. Each and every police agencies varies from small town police departments to larger federal agencies. The functions of the police agencies usually depend on the type of organization, its size, its mission, and jurisdiction. When selecting an agency that is suitable for you and your interests several things should be considered.
Upon examining former FBI Director James Comey’s 2015 speech and question and answer session which focused on law enforcement and race relations, many points were made to what got us to this point and possible remedies moving forward. Comey mentioned areas of debates which includes law enforcement’s relationship with communities, appropriate use of force, and the real and perceived biases within and outside of law enforcement. Several points were made during the speech and question and answer session which included data driven intelligence, understanding racial bias, cynicism, unjust laws, militarizing the police, and the impact of the media. Of the many points made by Comey, the two points that I found most important and compelling were
Over the past few years, there has been a great divide in our society between that of law enforcement agencies and some local community’s members that have placed fault onto on the law enforcement community (Abegbile, 2017). We have seen from the local communities not just cries for change in our law enforcement community, but have also protested in cities across the United States. With demands for criminal justice reform being demanded by such of an outcry in our society, we must evaluate the issues that are at the forefront of these matters (Abegbile, 2017). Our law enforcement community has over the past few years had to assess its leadership, the use of force by law enforcement officers, and to improving public safety.
Bite and hold or bark and hold? Law enforcement agencies across the country have tried to balance the ever explosive decision of using force on a suspect who flees. Continually battling public concerns that seem to favor the suspect over the officer, many departments have changed their policy on the canine units that they employ. K-9 officers are more than tools to their handlers, they are their companions, and partners. Now, groups like the ACLU have targeted the use of K-9’s in the apprehension of suspects and to prove their point they have even brought suit against the agencies who deploy the bite and hold method. They contend that this use of force causes permanent, sometimes irreparable, damage to the victims. In considering the use of force many law enforcement agencies have policies regarding the use of force and when K-9 handlers are allowed to release their partners to apprehend suspects. Under increasing pressure many agencies have redesigned their use of force continuums to accommodate less lethal forms of establishing control over the suspect. In departmental use of force continuums, where does the police dog rank? With the ability to bite with the force of up to 2000 pounds per square inch does that mean it is lethal?
As society continues to fight for the expansion of social diversity in public and private sectors. The community depends on the criminal justice system and the professionals associated with it to set the standard for equality and fairness. Research like what was conducted in this article is necessary as there is need to diversify a law enforcement community that is dominated by the white heterosexual male principles and standards. As our communities become more diverse it is imperative that law enforcement community do the same and replace traditional ignorant and stereotypical behavior with knowledge and professionalism. The studies are vital in providing insight to combat hostility and homophobia directed towards the nontraditional officer
The main philosophical tenant that influenced the evolution of law enforcement in America is efficiency. Policing started out as ineffective Night Watches during the colonial period. Men volunteered or were drafted stay up all night announcing weather and looking out for anything suspicious. Working a whole day job, and then staying up at night made life hard though, so people stopped volunteering, they avoided cities attempts to force them into the watch by paying fines. Even paying watchmen didn’t raise participation, as the pay wasn’t worth the terrible conditions. Cities started establishing police departments to take over for the watch, but officers at the time dealt with all problems that anyone had. Weather damage, orphan children, hospital
Recent incidents of police brutality have brought up critical discussions on policing and law enforcement across the country. The nation seems to have come into a consensus about police reforms, and find an alternative way to fight crimes while assuring the safety of the public . At a time where unarmed black teenagers are being gunned down by police officers who were there to protect, and police departments are more militarized than ever; one wonders about the legitimacy of the police system that is in place. The mistrust of the public on police, and the costly militarization of police are the results of “aggressive” policing approach that has been practiced for years. An alternative way of policing, community policing, has been recommended and put in place in some parts of the country. Community policing mainly focuses on preventing crimes by working first hand with communities and change the dynamic of power by having communities actively engaged to work for their safety. Community policing is not a new method, it has been discussed by scholars since the late 1980’s and is now getting more attention than ever with recent protests on police brutality. Unlike standard policing, community policing is economically efficient, and has proven to be effective in reducing crimes.
Law enforcement goes as far back as to cave dwellers, if it was not for England, the United States would be at a lost for policing. The United States uses the consensus and conflict theories to help the American people have a better understanding of human behavior and its limits. There are many types of policing that were identified and it is the law enforcement officers’ job to protect and sever and to deliver criminals into the hands of the law. If it was not for law enforcement officers, the community would be a disaster.
The United States has almost 18,000 law enforcement agencies. Each agency is limited by law. Law enforcement is also limited by the procedural law derived from U.S. Supreme Court decisions. Like much of the criminal justice system, this limited law enforcement model came from England. The United States has more police departments than any other nation in the world. Settlers to the new American colonies brought with them the constable-watch system, which became common in cities. In many rural areas, a sheriff and posse system was commonly used. America developed with two separate law enforcement systems. In 1844, New York City created the first paid, unified police force in the U.S. It was not until after the Civil War those police forces routinely
While you focused on how law enforcement handles minors ranging from those who are abused to the violent offenders, what is your take on the rest of the other groups which occupies a lot of law enforcement's time. While including children, the mentally ill, gangs, and those who commit domestic abuse also require various methods to try and combat them. In the case of the mentally ill, both they and the children require special approaches to better handle situations that arrive when they come into law enforcement's sights. Then for gangs, since there are various groups that focus on certain drugs, or crimes, require each department to find methods to combat each individual gang that are involved in their area. Then with domestic abuse,
