Guilt is not a response to anger, it is a response to one's own action or lack of action the fact that king claudius killed Hamlet's father and he does nothing about it, through a lack of action this is how he obtains his guilt. Evidently Dunny from Davies fifth business experiences the same type of guilt by dodging a snowball intended for him, but injuries Mrs Dempster instead. Although the time in which guilt was experienced differs greatly, Davies’ Fifth Business and Shakespeare’s Hamlet both have characters that experience guilt through a lack of action, and face isolation due to it. As a result, both characters go through an internal conflict regardless of how long they have felt that guilt.
Dunny and Hamlet experience the same type of guilt but go about different ways of enduring or solving their problems. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet’s Guilt is not being able to do anything about his father's death. He is indecisive on what to do for most of the play, weighing is options out and going back and forth about killing his uncle and how he will go about doing it. Subconsicley guilt builds up in him and pours out at certain moments in the play. Hamlet does not understand how to get his revenge which takes over his every thought causing him to feel frustrated with himself. He is angered by the fact he has not killed his uncle yet and that he will not take action. “peasant slave am I”( Shakespeare 2.2.535) This quote is a paradox, he emphasizes the struggle he is facing and continuing to shows that he is upset with himself. Hamlet calls himself the complete opposite of what he is, he is of royalty but compares himself to the lowest form of life in this time period. It seems though this helps Hamlet understand what he needs to do and how he should face his guilt, by creating the play that lead him to insure that he will kill his uncle. After all Hamlet goes through he is still hesitant about what he should do, but he finds hope in someone to help push himself to conquer the guilt that he is facing. Fortinbras is the person that helps Hamlet with his guilty conscious, not directly but indirectly. Since Fortinbras had accomplished what Hamlet is trying to do, he sees him as a inspiration in the situation that
