Susan Milligan from U.S. News addresses that the main argument of many opponents to increasing gun regulation laws will argue that it is meaningless because criminals, which by definition don’t follow the law, won’t allow gun laws to hamstring their criminal behavior. Although this statement proves to be true, increasing gun regulation isn’t only designed to control criminals but, the everyday law abiding citizen as recent gun-related tragedies express. For example, a story covered by US News presents a man in Florida killed another man in the movie theater after said man refused to stop using his phone during the movie. Any reasonable person would not do such action but the fact that this guy came to the realization that he could kill someone such way is alarming. It turns out that the man was a former police officer with a spotless record. Although a background check wouldn’t be helpful in this situation an increased gun control policy that could’ve prevented this event from happening would’ve been if people were not allowed to carry concealed weapons in public, this specific tragedy could have not happened. Another incident that could’ve been stopped is one when a 12-year old boy who brought a shotgun to school concealed in a musical instrument case in New Mexico where he shot and injured two classmates. He was able to access a gun because his family is one that enjoyed hunting and using guns for sport. Now would you label this family as criminals? It seems as rather not.
Many tragedies have occurred recently that have spurred the debate on whether or not we need tighter gun controls. On one side of the debate are the gun control supporters, who claim that the easy access to guns is the primary cause for high rates of crime plaguing the United States. On the other side are people who argue that gun laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns, since they will continue to get them illegally. Guns are used for protection when in the hands of people who obey the law. It is crucial to not hinder law-abiding citizen’s ability to possess firearms with stricter gun laws, since gun laws do not lower crime, and guns can keep people safe.
With the topic of gun control comes a widely split crowd. There are those that believe that gun control is necessary for decreasing crime and making a nation a safer place to live. And on the other end of the spectrum, they are those that speak of how anti-gun control is what would make our nation a safer place to live. After all, ?Would a person be as likely to break into another family's home knowing that the family has means of personal protection?? (Warren 308). ?Most everyone will agree that felons, addicts, morons, juveniles, alcoholics, the mentally incompetent, and others in whose hands even an ice pick or a baseball bat becomes a deadly weapon, should be denied a gun.? (Selib 202) However, what about those individuals that are
Gun Control in America has been argued back and forth for decades past. On one side it is strongly believed that the Second Amendment suggests that individual citizens have a constitutionally protected right to own a gun and protect themselves. These individuals believe that gun control laws do not in fact reduce gun violence. On the other side it is said if Gun Control laws are enacted there would be less gun and school violence. Also, it would be harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain a firearm. Both sides have very valid arguments and historical evidence to back their positions on within this debate.
In the use, purchase, and selling of guns, there are consequences for the actions of those who bypass the law. One major issue is in the contrast of people’s state of mind. For example, in the article about the two school shootings, the author includes the following statement from a child: “‘Just because I have access to a gun, that doesn't mean I'm going to go out and kill somebody,’ said Cummings, who took a safety course before receiving a state hunting license. ‘Anyone who does that, they've got to be messed up in the head.’” (Kids). The people, children or adults, who come to have access to a gun and do not use it solely for self-defense or the sport of hunting, will use it for violence and have the reputation for not being in the right
People who appreciate activities like shooting competitions and hunting, use firearms responsibly. This use contrasts with other uses, which often result in consequences that can be both intended and unintended. With past and present mass shootings, and acts of bloodshed perpetrated with the usage of weapons; has triggered a focus on gun control that once again has been brought into the spotlight. The purpose of the ongoing gun argument addresses the crimes that are committed with guns. This issue of gun control separated people into two groups: those who believe that carrying guns might prevent some crimes and fatalities, and those who don’t. There are individuals who believe absolutely the reverse: that more crime and deaths
As the population increases its stocks on firearms, a significant number of citizens are at risk of being harmed. According to statistics, “In 2000, almost 30,000 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States more than the number of deaths from, alcohol abuse, or drug abuse… [in spite of] almost 20,000 laws and regulations regulating gun usage to some degree” (Kwon and Baack). Though several individuals are in fear of losing guns as weapons for protection, a greater number of laws will continue to be useful in maintaining the security of citizens upon significant new laws addressing gun control. Although the existence of guns is necessary to protect bear arms, gun control laws help reduce violence, decrease the homicide rate, and help prevent accidents from around the globe. New gun control laws should be enforced to ensure the safety of the entire population, and most importantly to prevent any gun violence as necessary to help save the lives of the innocent.
The amount of crimes happening today will only increase with stricter gun control laws because there is a higher temptation to steal guns. An American citizen claims, “Ever since I first learned how to shoot, the issue with gun violence around the nation became clear: Guns are not the problem; people are” (Sherfenski). Police need to lock up these people committing the disastrous crimes that affect so many innocent lives. These blameless people are not prepared when they are being attacked, and that is because most shootings tend to happen in areas where guns are controlled. The former United States Secretary of Education, William Bennett, explains the reason that criminals decide to go to places that have controlled gun laws is because: “These murderers, while deranged and deeply disturbed, are not dumb. They show up to schools, universities, malls and public places where their victims cannot shoot back” (Bennett). Even if guns are controlled in public places including malls and schools, where there are uncontrolled shootings, why would it make a difference if they were controlled everywhere? It would not make a difference whatsoever because these crimes are done out of pure, revolting pleasure. Committing a crime is one thing, but taking away a right that was given to Americans in the 1790s is a whole different story.
“A California Gun Law Runs Counter to Trend” is an article written by Adam Nagourney and Julie Turkewitz for the New York Times. It analyzes the arguments both for and against the ability for individuals to carry concealed guns on a college campus. The authors never express their direct opinions on the issue or how it can be solved, but instead pull evidence from both arguments. The outcome is a compilation of what is happening politically, due to the rising distress concerning this topic, as well as the implications of these government engagements. These sources provide a wide-ranging argument for both sides of the claim.
In the article Gun Control Laws, by Stephen P. Halbrook, the author believes that gun control is not only useless, it puts citizens into harm's way and even takes away their rights. First, gun control does not keep people safe and protect them from shootings such as the one that happened in las vegas, it makes them more vulnerable and less prepared. In fact it has no effect whatsoever on these types of shootings because criminals have their own illegal ways to get guns. For example, France has far stricter gun laws than the U.S. Yet, 130 were slain, mostly with illegal guns, in the 2015 Paris attacks.” Also, police can not be always be their for every citizen in need, and having gun restrictions only makes matters worse. Families having a gun
In the article, Americas Deadly Gun Addiction, By the Numbers written by Joanna Pearlstein, data is released regarding the United States having more guns that adults in the country. The mass shootings across the country has led to many civilians wanting more gun control. President Obama spoke to the nation that more background checks will be ran to hopefully reduce this situation, and lower the gun deaths in the United States, however gun lobbyers argue that it is not the guns themselves that are causing the issue and they believe that no matter how many background checks are ran you cannot make sure that a fun will not be placed in the hands of someone who many end someone’s life unexpectedly.
Currently the United States gun control laws are ineffective and violate our Constitutional rights. 20% of gun owners own 65% of all firearms. Firearms are trafficked through the border and sold privately. The US gun control laws are taking away our rights of the second amendment, criminals will always have guns, and less self-protection.
Gun control activists are lobbying and pushing for a revision of the nation’s gun laws with new legislation trying to pass a new background check law, but it failed to pass early in 2013 due to the National Rifle Association’s ability to present evidence to rebuttal the law and persuade lawmakers otherwise. The United States needs a change in its gun laws; will they help? Many Americans believe stricter laws will hinder dangerous people from owning a gun more or less the statics shows that is not the problem; dangerous individuals obtain their weapons either through a family member or friends. Year after year, it is proven by the series of gun related incidents throughout the United States. Stricter gun laws will stop the violent killing
“But in practice, criminals, being criminals, don’t obey the law.” It just like what professor Li said, gun control is a problem connecting with civil rights and social security. If the government prohibits gun purchase, people would fear to go out, because they cannot forecast what dangers would be happened outside. “Why they feel fear? Because the evildoer has guns, people are defenseless.” professor Li said. While Americans remain sharply divided in their overall view of the tension between gun control and gun rights, shootings were happening again and again. In a word, the government, not only put into gun control effect, but have to ban illegal guns in the black
Loose gun regulation and poor background checks result in the loss of life at exceedingly large rates everyday and every year in the United States. I have always felt that gun laws are not strict enough, and this is to show by the massive amounts of death that have been a result of poor gun control in the US. Recent statistics have shown that “one person dies in America every 16 minutes from a gun” (“On Guns”). Kristof further validates his argument by stating that “...in the last four years, [and] more people have died in the United States from guns [...] than [the number of] Americans [who] have died in the wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq combined” (“On Guns”). The loss of lives in these wars alone are lives that never should
Guns and crime. These two words sound interesting, right? Now think about it deeply, do they really link to each other? Do guns surely lead to crime and violent issues? If so, should governments set restrictive rules for people who own and use the guns, such as provide the mental health reports, and test the shooting skills before purchasing the guns? These questions have been mentioned and discussed over and over again in today’s world. We can often hear the news about gun violence, such as a tragic mass shooting somewhere around the world and tons of victims who died from the accident, or husband that shot his wife by accident. Thus, many people, especially people in America, are asking, and even doubting whether or not it is beneficial to own guns at home without a license. In my opinion, I think that owning a gun can be helpful sometimes in some ways, as it can always be the extremely powerful and helpful weapon for self-defense, especially when help from the law enforcement officers are not available.
