Gun violence has been a great desolation to our society, dating back to the 1300’s when the first use of a fire arm was recorded. The establishment of guns from the early to modern stages has had significant changes in our society. As Kristof mentioned in the article, “too many schools and colleges devastated by shootings, watch too many students get an education in grief.” His efforts are to persuade gun privileges to be more stringent. On behalf of Kristof’s outlook on the situation I support his view. In order to carry out this cause guns should require gun insurance, ban guns for domestic violence offenders and limit guns per
In the Article titled “Our Gun-Control Laws are not Stopping Gun Violence,” the author, Jenny A. Durkan argues that tightening already existing gun laws is the most efficient way to stop gun violence (7). Durkan talks about how she received a gun at the age of 10 from her father. She was taught how to safely use clean and store the gun (2-3). Owning a gun at a very young age shaped Durkan’s stance on gun violence. Durkan argues that ultimately guns are falling into the wrong hands and that we must teach people about guns and the importance of gun safety (6). Durkan believes that tightening gun laws consists of gun restrictions, universal background checks, respecting laws enforcers and education (1-19). Durkan is certain that if her beliefs are implemented, guns will stop falling into the wrong hands.
Mass shootings are defined as an incident during which an active shooter shoots three or more people in a single event (Bridges and Leigh). Sadly, these incidents have been on a steady rise in America and little is being done. In the first 164 days of 2016, there was 136 mass killings (Willingham). The main political argument has been dealing with gun control in the United States, but with both sides in disagreement, little has been done. All the victims of mass shooting, like Sandy Hook, Orlando nightclub, or the Colorado movie theater incident did not plan to lose their life; even though mass shootings are a rare act of violence, they have become common in the U.S. Mass shootings are an issue in American society because the disregarding
Columbine. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. Pulse Nightclub. Last Vegas. Parkland, Florida. These are just a few of the 150 mass shootings that have taken place in the last 50 years. That’s an average of three shootings per year. If you ask me even one mass shooting is too many, but this is the tragic reality we live in. When something like this occurs, it sparks two arguments that seem to foolishly rival each other. Many demand that people take mental health more seriously. Others call for stricter gun control. My concern is why does it have to be one or the other? Why are these considered mutually exclusive? Mental health and gun violence are huge issues that the media seems to pit against each other as if we can only fix
The city of Chicago, Illinois is facing a crisis in regards to gun violence. This pervasive issue affects the city as whole, but ripples violently through Chicago’s neighborhoods with lower socioeconomic status. While this form of violence in Chicago has been a problem for decades, 2016 was a “devastatingly violent year” as 762 people were murdered in the city (Sweeney, Schmadeke, & Meisner, 2017, p. 1). The city of Chicago has a population of 2.7 million people, which is about three times lower than that of New York City. Despite the smaller population size, the FBI and Chicago police data show that Chicago registered more shootings and homicides in 2016 than any other U.S. city. This paper will aim to provide context
Upon reading the article, “What If We Treated Gun Violence Like A Public Health Crisis?” and watching the news every now and then, there are many major tragedies surrounding around us. It is absolutely scary, and only seems to be getting worse. The article starts off with the statement that, “More than 30,000 people a year are killed by gun violence,” making it clear just how serious the situation pertaining gun violence is (Kodjak, 2017, p. 1). Yet, this statistic does not even take into consideration the amount of people who are injured due to gun violence, which would sky rocket this total.
Many believe that as the year progresses, our lives become more dangerous for us to be a part of. However, Zachary Crockett states that the beginning is bad, and “In the first 24 hours of the new year, 264 separate incidents of gun violence happened across the United States” (Crockett 1). He is helping us to illustrate we struggle throughout the entire year, and we get attacked at the times which we least expect them to happen. In the infographic that is being shown, Chicago was reported to have “24 shootings, leaving 3 dead and 28 injured”, leading us to the idea that some towns are at more risk than others (Crockett 1). He is leading us to believe that some cities, like Chicago, face a better likliness of shootings occurring, then in some other cities. There needs to be a better handle of guns in this area, and take caution so that many do not get hurt. When trying to depict other important details, Crockett helps explain that “every day, and average of 112 people are killed or injured by gun violence in America” (Crockett 1). There needs to be a tighter grip on not only the actions of the people in the country, but the weapon. Guns cause a lot of stress and havoc across the country, and if we could allow ourselves to overcome this, then we would be helping ourselves out.
Republicans are eager to shut down this Colorado gun bill. Here’s why their dream could backfire big time.
"The world is filled with violence. Because criminals carry guns, we decent law-abiding citizens should also have guns. Otherwise, they will win and the decent people will lose."-James Earl Jones. I chose this quote because if you don’t let good citizens protect themselves then criminals will take advantage of that. There is no real way to get rid of guns and there will always be guns. Just to clarify something a lot of people don’t know is that all automatic rifles are already illegal in our country. You can only buy semi-automatic rifles. The only way people can make semi-automatic rifles automatic is by illegally converting them using a device called a bump stock. President Trump is already pursuing a ban on all sales of bump stocks. Gun Control does not work because no evidence proves it deters crime rates at all, it just takes away guns from good citizens
The topic of gun violence is one the most debatable subjects to the U.S citizen. On one hand people say that we should all carry guns around for protection, while on the other hand people say we should ‘t due to the harm they can cause when used in threatening ways like shootings etc. I believe both arguments are valid, But I think there is one way to please both sides.
One of America’s biggest monsters is gun violence. When someone mentions monsters one of the top things thought of is gun violence. It’s ridiculous the government and NRA care more about money than the lives of their children. The government and NRA need to stand up and put laws in place to restrict guns. Not to take them away but to make it harder for mentally unstable people to get near them. Assault weapons do not belong in homes of average American’s, so they have no reason to be for sale. The typical hand gun can protect homes, why does anyone need a Military grade weapon to stop someone from breaking in? They don’t. The government needs to step up and stop thinking about money and start thinking of their children and all children. We need stricter gun laws. At the age of 19 I
The media and the government have all been shining a cascade of unfortunate lies on suppressors. All these tragic shootings have all come to one unfortunate conclusion: firearms are bad and must be restricted or even banned. The truth is, these events haven’t even had suppressors involved in them. This is quite an unfortunate thing since suppressors can do so much good in all aspects of their use. Suppressors are a device used to reduce the decibel level of the rifle's muzzle blast, through a system of baffles that redirect the air coming out of the barrel reducing the noise output. They are threaded onto the end of a rifle, shotgun, or pistol barrel. Suppressors should be taken off the NFA, the National Firearms Act, which is an act passed
The deadly shootings at military sites in Tennessee illustrate the threat that FBI officials have warned about: violence directed against a vulnerable government target by a lone gunman with apparent terrorist aspirations.
Gun control is an issue that has been talked about in our country for many years now. Every year people are calling for stricter laws on guns. In order to purchase a gun in America, a person must go through a background check. So it’s not like just anyone can purchase one. I think that this issue should be taken more seriously, but I do not believe guns should be taken away from American citizens.
One gun, one church, and one miserable Wednesday night. On June 17th, 2015 Dylann Roof set out for a mass killing spree killing nine victims, including a pastor. Certain rights could uphold gun laws and make it so such things do no happen; unfortunately these tragic things do still occur. However, people who do follow the law and do follow laws help in some of these tragic occurrences. Although these things happen it is our God given right as United States citizens to bear arms. Through the second amendment and other gun laws, we could live in peace and still have our rights to bear arms.
The gun control debate is a good example that justifies the common known mantra that history will always repeat itself. Gun control is a regulation put forward with an aim of managing the purchase and ownership of firearms with the main aim being to reduce the criminal and unsafe use of firearms. The gun control measures involve strategies such as registration of firearms aimed at restricting the ownership of guns by people proved to be dangerous including the mentally ill, juniors, and those with criminal records. The gun control regulations also go ahead to restrict the purchase of guns within a given period of time or strategies such as imposition of a total or partial ban on ownership or sale of firearms. Majority of the United States citizens have embraced ownership of firearms which has come to be part of their culture. Consequently, any measures aimed at controlling ownership of guns triggers mixed reactions among the citizens sparking a heated debate involving the law enforcers, citizens and special groups with own interests. Despite the fact that there are numerous gun-related deaths reported in the US than anywhere else in the world, the history of gun control debate stands out to prove that the numerous proposed gun control measures are bound to fail when measured against the benefits of free ownership of guns.
