The play Hamlet has been converted into many films, as the play acts like a script and stage directions help directors accurately portray the text. While the play provides indications of how the play will generally looks like, it is with different views from directors that allow Hamlet to be interpreted in many different ways. In Act Three Scene Two, we see evidence of how a director’s interpretation of the text can enhance mood of the scene and the intensity of the situation. As Hamlet begins to expose his uncle as the murderer of King Hamlet, it is with the director’s choice that shows the intensity between Hamlet and his uncle, and allows the audience to feel the same intensity as well. As Hamlet is on the stage, he further interrupts the play by taking the bottle of poison held by Lucianus, and narrating the death of King Hamlet. In the written version of the play, there is indication that a bottle of poison is present in the scene, but the film takes the symbolism of bottle and has Hamlet hold and point the bottle towards Claudius in the stands. This symbolism of the bottle of poison is enhanced as Hamlet holds eye contact with Claudius, as it is evident to Claudius and the guests attending the play that Hamlet is accusing Claudius of killing King Hamlet, and his death was not the accident it was made out to be. These accusations, along with the anger in Hamlet’s voice and the presentation of the bottle, causes Claudius to become aware of Hamlet’s knowledge of the death of his father, causing Claudius to rise out fear of what may occur if the kingdom finds out about this tragedy. The decision of the direction to place Hamlet on the stage and have him hold the bottle of poison in the film provided the scene with more intensity as viewers were able to understand the uncomfortableness of the attendants and the fear from Claudius. Along with Hamlet’s position on stage, it was with the excellent use of film techniques that were able to capture the true feelings of Claudius and the attendants.
