Everyone knows that in life, there are hardships, up's and downs. In the book Fever, 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, Mattie has to overcome the yellow fever, helping others and getting help herself. Mattie has to grow up quickly to survive. There are many, many other themes that can be chosen, but overcoming hardship is one of the most obvious ones. When life gets you down, you know you have your friends to help you. For example, in Fever 1793, on page 169, when Mattie came back to her home she saw Eliza. "I cried a river and poor Eliza did her best to comfort me." Eliza learned that Mattie was all alone so Eliza took her in when grandfather died. When the world turns your life upside down, you always have your friends to help you to make it easier. The book Fever, 1793, shows it. When Mattie came back to her hometown of Philadelphia, she comes back to her home ransacked. So Mattie cleaned it up and restarted the restaurant in her home. She shows that if you work hard, it can't last for long. Life has up's and down's but you can get through because people come together to help. For instance, in the book Fever, 1793, the Free African Society went around to help the yellow fever victims. The doctors thought the Africans were immune to the disease because hardly any Africans died. When people come together, like the Africans helping the victims, you can get through it.
