Has America Really Won The Civil War?

First of all, the North won the Civil War because they won the Battle of Gettysburg. This battle was one of the most crucial in the war. To win this was another step towards victory. The website, "Nps.gov" states, "The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, sometimes referred to as the 'High Water Mark of the Rebellion' resulted not only in Lee's retreat to Virginia, but an end to the hopes of the Confederate States of America for independence" (Nps.gov). The evidence is saying that this loss for the South ended all of their hopes for victory. Since the North won the Battle of Gettysburg they are one step closer to victory, and bringing the Union back together again. The battle took away all the hope from the Southern states. The Northern states won the Civil war because they were able to defeat the Confederate armies at the battle of Gettysburg.

It can be said that the South began the Civil War from a winning position. They had declared their independence, formed their own country and government, and they needed only to keep what they already had. But this was a monumental task as the government was required to protect every inch of land within the Confederacy. As a new country, the Confederacy needed to demonstrate the ability to defend its own territory from external threat. Without this ability, the Confederacy could never receive the international recognition and support it needed to survive. Aside from this reason, the South also needed to protect the institution of slavery from outside interference. If the Northern armies took control of a particular Southern area, the Confederates felt that they would free all the slaves, thus destroying the entire structure of society and its economic value. Because of this, Jefferson Davis was forced to devise a flawed war strategy which attempted to preserve the entire Confederacy at the cost of concentrating his forces.

First, the South couldn’t have won the civil war because state’s rights prevented unification of the South. The very issue that created the Confederacy helped to destroy it. In waging war, the South faced problems of politics and government that greatly complicated its problem of economic mobilization. No one would deny the troublesome effect of the conflict generated by differing ideas of how best to protect liberty and to organize southern society for the war effort. The Union won!This is great for the north, however what is next for the Confederate army. With slaves becoming freedmen and the south destroyed after total war, a lot was to be done after the civil war. A solution to this was Reconstruction. Reconstruction was a period in american history from 1865 to 1877 lasting twelve years (Foner). Reconstruction after the war caused many social, political, and economic changes to the newly formed union.

Civil War is defined as a war between citizens of the same country. When the two parties are from the same country there are bound to be major advantages and disadvantages to both sides. The South had a very recognizable advantage fighting on the defensive territory and being familiar with the land while the North was essentially coming in blind. While this would have been an advantage for the South, the North had an advantage themselves, they outnumbered the South. With both sides having huge advantages and disadvantages, it makes one think of the ‘what if’s”. Both the good and bad of each side played a crucial role of the outcome. The side that won would have an impact on the entire country.

Though it is very clear that the American Civil War was won by the North, not every person may agree. Many may argue that the South won due to countless reasons, most being slavery related. However, it is very clear who the true winner of the war was: the North. Sure, they may not have ended up with everything that they wanted from the South by the end of the war, but overall they did win freedom. The South, though they did get some advantages in the final compromise, did not win what they were fighting for or the country that they had hoped for in the end. The Union was the real winner of the Civil War, because of what they were ultimately fighting for.

If it weren't for Washington we wouldn't be America. Washington is the commander of the Continental Army during the revolution, and he is why we won that war. This may not seem like a big deal but it is. If the U.S. got into a war when Washington was president he would know what to do just like he did in the revolution.

In early August 1861, the Confederates approached Unions army, which was camped at Springfield, Missouri. On August ninth, 1861, both the Confederates and the Union made plans to attack each other. On August tenth, the Union attacked the Confederates on Wilson’s creek about twelve miles southwest from Springfield. Confederate cavalry received the first shot and retreated from the high ground, later known as the “bloody hill”. Infantry soon rushed up to stabilize their positions.

The Civil War was a brutal conflict between the North and South; brother against brother. With slavery as the root cause, Southern states had seceded from the Union and were fighting for their independence. They became the Confederate States of America (CSA) and were a force to be reckoned with. The Union, however, put up a fierce struggle to preserve the country. There is an issue that followed the Civil War that can only really be addressed in retrospect. Who won the Civil War? Not necessarily the war itself, but who won the peace. There is not really a single or definitive answer because the effects and the outcomes of the war are still being determined. This question is nebulous in the fact that certain aspects can be attributed to the South winning some aspects of the war and the North others. Also, do we include the impacts on former slaves as a Northern victory or do consider them to be their own side during this conflict. Many people will say that the North undoubtedly won the war, but the South's social hierarchy did not really change that much after the war.

The South was viewed by many in the United States and elsewhere as a robust, self-sufficient economy (Surdam, 2001, p. 1). It produced much of the world's supply of cotton and Texans bragged that their cattle could feed the world. What the South lacked in manufacturing was compensated for by the immense wealth produced from raw cotton, cattle, and corn exports. Obviously, the predictions that the South could survive a war with the North due to its economic self-sufficiency were wrong. This essay analyzes the possible reasons for the failure of the Confederacy to win the Civil War.

The American Revolution marked significant changes in the political, social, and economic status of the Americans. For a long, time the lives of the Americans were darkened by the British colonial rule. The British government passed several intolerable Acts. For instance, the Massachusetts Government Act was a restriction to town meetings. As a result, the American opponents began collective actions to disapprove the colonial rule. After a long struggle, the Americans overthrew the existing rule. However, the new dawn did not provide freedom to all citizens. The slaves were compelled to continue supplying forced labor to the Whites. The resultant effect of oppression pushed the slaves to start fighting for the equality. In this case, it is evident that the Civil War was a direct consequence of the American Revolution.[1]
