In the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, a thirteen year old boy named Brian is flying in a plane to visit his father, when the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes. Brian survives the crash and is forced to live in the wilderness of the Canadian forest. Throughout this book, the author, Gary Paulsen, shows time and time again that no matter how rough things get, never give up. “He ripped at it until it released… somehow he pulled himself out” (29). This is an example from the beginning of the story from when Brian crash landed in a lake and tore himself out. This quote supports my thesis and does so by showing that Brian doesn’t care what happens, he is going to survive what is thrown at him. He it inside of a plane that is sinking
In the novel The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien often brings up Jimmy cross’s love for Martha and how he struggles expressing they way feel feels about her. “Right then he thought he should’ve done something brave”(O’Brian 5) Cross felt much regret because he did not act on his feelings. He did not have the courage to express his love they way he wanted to towards Martha. Jimmy Cross, who had been in love with Martha for quite sometime even though she didn't feel the same way tried to play it off as if he had gotten over her.
“Standing up for what is right is not always an easy thing to do” (Phillip Gwynne).
The author, Gary Paulsen, uses at least 3 literary techniques in his novel Hatchet: repetition, imagery, and personification.
“I'm hungry and i'd trade everything I have for a hamburger.”(47) Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is an exciting story about a character named Brian Robeson who is left in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but a hatchet and must survive until help comes. Hatchet supports my belief that hard work helps overcome obstacles.
Mistakes can seriously impact the people who make them; however, the effects are not always negative. In the book, Whirligig, by Paul Fleischman, a teenage boy named Brent is the new kid in town and he faces some major problems with his peers. After being pushed around, treated like a pawn, and utterly rejected, Brent tries to commit suicide by taking his hands off the wheel of his moving car. Although Brent’s attempt is not successful, his actions still have a tragic ending- Lea, a young, kind, beautiful girl, is unlucky enough to be in the car that Brent crashes into. The car accident results in Lea’s death, but also the start of Brent’s magical journey of redemption. Brent’s task is to travel to the four corners of the country, build
William Golding contends in his novel “Lord of the flies” that the dangers of evil which lurk inside all of us savagery are through the character Roger. When one considers the word savagery, specifically within the frame of william golding’s novel, savagery comes as a result of freedom and no consequences. In the novel when Roger gets stuck on the island he isn’t certainly evil in fact he is a very shy kid . Although as the story progresses we see him descending into it evilness and savagery. We see that when Roger is walking on the beach with mauris after kicking the kids sandcastle, “Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed threw it at henry….threw it to miss.”(Chapter 4) This was a sign of savagery growing inside of him. He wanted to hit
Pages are like a book as Peter is to Mr. Terupt he can’t live without him. Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea is about a couple kids and their new teacher going through the school year. Peter is a kid that is always getting in trouble and he does not care if he gets in trouble or anything.
Have you ever been left alone to fend for yourself? Or had no one to support you through your hardest times? You would ask yourself this while reading the captivating story in the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. After surviving the traumatizing plane crash while going to his father's house, Brian was left alone to fend for himself in the canadian wilderness with nothing but a hatchet his mother gave him. For 54 days completely on his own, he survived through the toughest times and all the challenges he faced. And while doing so he changed mentally and physically and this helped him to survive.
Do you think you would survive by yourself in the middle of the woods for 54 days? The question that I asked you is because of the novel Hatchet and this novel is written by Gary Paulsen. Out of all of the things in the story that stood out to me was the AHA moments because I think they help brian the most. The two biggest AHA moments was when he had to put his food up higher and that he can't be lazy.
Lou Brock’s famous quote, “show me a guy who’s afraid to look bad, and I’ll show you a guy you can beat every time”, can easily be applied to Silo. Silo is the exact opposite of what Lou Brock is warning everyone not to become. Silo simply does not care what opinions other people form about him, on or off the field, as long as he is winning. When Silo is on the field, he goes to great lengths in order to not look good, but to win football games.
Howard should not have gotten a lobotomy because there was nothing wrong with him, he was just being mistreated. He was punished for things he didn’t do, his step-mother picked favorites with the other kids, and he was abused by his parents. So a lobotomy was an extreme measure in his case for the things he did and didn’t do.
In the short story by Don Gayton the main character has many aspects of being a very spiritual human being. In this quote it is clearly showed that he has a personal and spiritual connection to the waterhole. “Sometimes I felt suspended, as if I were floating through the rooms of a fantastic sculpture gallery, each one a different statement of colour, texture and form.” this explains how the water almost removes him from reality on a spiritual and physical level! Another quote that supports the fact he is a very down to earth and spiritual person is “A cold wind passed through my guts and I felt as if I had come home to a break-in.
Clay Jensen: Not much information is provided about physical descriptions but he is described as cute by Hannah. Clay is described as average looking in general. “With the cutest, littlest, boyish smirk, you asked, “What was that for” Hannah Baker: Hannah was thought by many people as a slut. She wasn't shockingly beautiful, but still more than “average”. She even admits it when she talks about Alex’s “Who's hot/
Clay Jensen is more honest because he put a lot of thoughts into what he hear and gives his feedback and he speaks his mind. For example, if he doesn’t like something that happened while listening as Hannah speaks in her tapes, he speaks his mind (rude or aggressively) but if something questioning or second-guessing happens in the tapes, he gives a playful response but sometimes he acts as if he’s serious. For example, when Hannah seems curious about how her kiss with justin will be Clay says “Hannah, if you kissed back then like you kissed at the party, trust me, he liked it.”
“The weird, weird thing about devastating loss is that life actually goes on. When you’re faced with a tragedy, a loss so huge that you have no idea how you can live through it, somehow, the world keeps turning, the seconds keep ticking.” I came across this quote when I read a book by James Patterson; I was able to comprehend the literal meaning of the quote but not fully relate to its meaning. That is until the beginning of eighth grade. I clearly remember the day when I received the phone call, from my mom in Mexico, to tell me that my grandfather was in a better place. I was in shock and did not know what to do. I just stood in my mom’s room with a growing pain in my chest; I could not cry, not because I didn’t want to, but because I could
