Hazardous waste it does not only affect the environment it also has the ability to affect wildlife and the human population. Hazardous waste is a serious problem if any form of it is leaked in the environment it can cause tremendous environmental catastrophes. On the other hand it can be used as synthetic fuel to power certain machines. So hazardous waste can be used for helpful purposes but it can also devastate the environment. Hazardous waste what is it? According to The World Book Encyclopedia hazardous wastes “…chemicals and chemical by products that can endanger human health or pollute the environment,” (122). For a hazardous waste to be classified as an ignitable waste it must be “…a liquid and has a flash point below 140 degrees Fahrenheit…” (DEEP: What is a Haz. Waste?). This means that if the hazardous material can catch on fire if it is less than 140 degrees Fahrenheit it is considered an ignitable waste. If a waste “…can corrode steel at a rate of greater than ¼ of an inch per year,” (DEEP: What is a Haz. Waste?) it is considered a corrosive waste. That means that if the waste can eat through steel more than ¼ of an inch a year it is corrosive. According to “DEEP: What is a Hazardous Waste?” “…a reactive waste…[is] unstable, react[s] with water or form hazardous mixtures with water, are capable of releasing toxic cyanide or sulfide gases under certain conditions, are explosive, or are capable of detonating under certain conditions,”. A waste is only considered “…toxic if it contains 40 different hazardous constituents at a concentration equal to or greater than a certain amount,” (DEEP: What is a Haz. Waste?). Another way to categorize hazardous waste is through certain lists of hazardous waste. One of which is F-listed wastes, this list includes “…certain spent solvents, metal finishing wastes,…chemical manufacturing wastes, wood preserving wastes,…and hazardous waste landfill leachate,” (DEEP: What is Haz.
