This paper attempts to offer a Marxist reading of Conrad 's Heart of Darkness (1899) and Defoe's The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) . Specifically , this paper highlights how the concept of commodification helps us to understand the dialectic struggle between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat which are both considered the products of their socioeconomic and material circumstance with an emergent capitalist culture. By depicting how capitalists in the two novellas commodify objects or humans and by investigating the struggles between the 'haves' and the 'haves-not' .

In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad suggest that true human existence cannot prevail productively without the dynamics of society. Throughout numerous scenes in the novel, Conrad stresses the necessity of societal restraints through Kurtz’s inability to prosper as a human being when he is removed from the expectations of civilization. In the scene above, Marlow’s myopic observations of Kurtz reveals Conrad’s theme by illustrating the annihilation of Kurtz’s essential human characteristics as he descends into a barbaric lifestyle absent of the norms of society. Not only does the above scene support Conrad’s main theme, but it portrays his writing style, characterization of Marlow, and symbolism as used throughout the novel.

In Heart Of Darkness, Conrad introduces the following characters, the manager, the brickman, and the foreman, with various distinctive characteristics. Additionally, Conrad applies each man to contribute towards accumulating information about Mr. Kurtz to Marlow. Correspondingly, while Marlow was accumulating information regarding Mr. Kurtz, Marlow encounters a painting created by Mr. Kurtz, which possesses a symbolic connotation to it. Furthermore, as a consequence of Marlow interest in Kurtz, it exceedingly represents Marlow’s characteristic.

1. The setting of the story begins on the Nellie, a ship. The turn of the tide is significant because it gives the men on board extra time to talk, and Marlow begins telling his story. In addition, symbolically, the turning of the tide conveys a change, and perhaps, foreshadowing of the story. The author spends a lot of time dealing with light because it is the main symbol in the novella. Light and darkness are universal symbols that represent good and evil. Although not explicitly stated, those who have the light are those who are “civilized”, and those who have the darkness are those who remain “uncivilized”, particularly the people living in Africa.

The story centers on Marlow and his journeys up the Congo River as a riverboat captain for a Belgian trading company. From an early age, Marlow was ambitious. He wanted to go places that “looked particularly inviting on a map” (Conrad, p.4). Marlow knew that if he wanted to go to the places he’d longed dreamed of experiencing, he had to take a chance at working for the trading company. Marlow is assigned as captain of a riverboat and his determination is a reflection of his self-concept. Marlow says “I don't like work—no man does—but I like what is in the work,—the chance to find yourself. Your own reality—for yourself, not for others—what no other man can ever know” (Conrad, p.18). You can argue that nearly everyone on this planet has at least one desire within that is so dark and evil that they would do anything to achieve that goal. Symbolism: In the first scene when Marlowe first enters the Sternwood house there is a detailed description of a stained glass window portraying a scene of a knight trying to save a helpless woman tied to a tree. This picture symbolizes Marlowe’s need to quickly solve a problem, and his wanting to help women in distress. This symbol is used to characterize Marlowe and also to show how women are seen through out the novel, that a man is always needed to save a woman and that she is helpless on her own.

In the novel Heart of Darkness, Joesph Conrad uses the symbol of the river to show change and how the the river is deceiving and evil. Conrad uses the Congo river, which in its time was a key element in the conversion of Africa to the imperialistic country it is in the novel. The Congo river allows access into the interior of Africa, referred to as the “Dark Continent” in the novel. With only two items to judge by, each has to hold significant importance in order to draw a reader into reading the novel. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad represents a mysterious title to draw readers into reading the novel, but hold a much more significant underlying meaning which represents many elements in the novel, while also symbolizing external concepts in the overall plot. The title represents many important elements such as the character of Mr. Kurtz and others, to the setting of Africa in the novel, and to the concept of the evil nature of imperialism outside of the novel. Through the title, Conrad has created significance for elements of the novel creating a very large impact on readers of the book.

The description shows the bleakness of the Congo compared to the outside world, is one of the first representations of the civilized (or outside) world contrasted to the Congo.
