In 1974 there was a cult that started called Heaven’s Gate, by Marshall Applewhite (1931-1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927-1997). Their cult was considered to be an UFO religious Millenarian Group located in San Diego, California.
In 1972 Marshall met Bonnie discovering that she shared a common interest with Applewhite in theosophy and biblical prophecy. The two soon became great friends shortly after finding this commons interest. By June of 1984 they both decided that they were chosen to fulfill biblical prophecies. Together Marshall and Bonnie formed a group that believed that the earth was about to be “recycled”. They believed that the only way to survive was to leave the planet immediately. Though they didn’t believe in suicide at first, they considered their bodies to be “vessels” in the journey to the next level. In ordered to be accepted into the next level and to be taken by an UFO all members had to be willing to leave all attachments to the planet such as family,friends, sexuality, jobs, money and possessions. …show more content…

The four choices consisted of physical pickup, natural death, accidental death, or death from random violence, or outside persecution that leads to death and wilful exit from the human body. Toward the end Applewhite decided that they all would have to leave their bodies just as Jesus did. On March 24,25,26 all 39 members committed suicide and “graduated”. Thirty-eight members plus Applewhite were found dead. They all used a phenobarbital mixed with applesauce and used vodka to wash it down. They were all found with bags on their heads and all wearing identical clothing. Richard Ford was the one member who didn’t kill himself and videotaped the mansion.
