In comparison of three families from different cultural backgrounds consisting of Greek, Italian and Hispanic, differences and similarities were found on cultural approaches to health maintenance. One similarity is that culture is central to their health habits. Health Maintenance for all three cultures is very similar based on the extreme importance of a religious affiliation. Religious affiliation is of paramount importance to health and what is perceived as health. However; religious affiliation is in itself different, where the percentages of Greeks practice Eastern Orthodox Religion and most Hispanics and Italians practice Catholicism. All three cultures believe that to maintain health you have to be in affiliation with the church and consistently practice religious beliefs for protection against harm and illness. Most individuals of all three cultures pray every day and have a religious icon in their home. In the Hispanic culture, Greek culture, and Italian culture food plays a very important role in health maintenance. In evaluating the Heritage Assessment Tool (HAT) two things became immediately obvious. First, the questions provided a fair outline and structure for identifying factors of culture, religion, tradition and environment and how they may influence the subject family’s approach to health maintenance and health restoration. And second, that the medical professional using the HAT must be aware of and sensitive to the scrutinizing nature of the questions and what defensive and evasive responses they may invoke. While conducting these family interviews, I noticed even when asking the questions of my own family that they were not immune to this scrutiny affect. As such, when interviewing the other two families, I was very attentive to them and

Intellectual Heritage 851 incorporated a variety of novels and narratives written throughout different points in time. Some of these texts were familiar, and some I had never seen or heard of. The constant reading and analyzation that came with this course and its readings were intense, but the hard work did not come with a reward. These texts were beneficial because they taught and allowed me to further develop my analyzation skills. These texts aided the growth in my ability to critically analyze readings and comprehend the deeper meanings that are between the lines due to the variety/type of the required readings and the time and effort it took to understand them.

One of the families assessed for this assignment was a first generation Mexican American family originally from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The family consists of a young couple and two young children. Religiosity plays a big part in the lifestyle of this Mexican American family and this was evident in the rosaries worn by the couple. The couple regularly attends a local Roman Catholic Church for spiritual renewal and to pray for good health. Like other Catholics, they believe sickness is a sign of spiritual weakness and whenever individuals are sick members of the family pray for them (O’Brien, 2011). The family strongly prefers to prepare its own food, and its favorite dishes are traditional Latin American cuisines such as Chile, tamales and tortillas. Latin American cuisines are high in calories, high in salt, cooked in grease or deep fried, and contain lots of flour. When the family cannot cook they usually eat out, mostly in Mexican restaurants. Mexican Americans have a strong attachment to their families so they talk to their parents and siblings on an almost daily basis. Members of the family interviewed also communicate with their cousins, uncles, and aunts back in Mexico through online social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp. Communication between the couple and with other family members is almost always in Spanish.
Readers of Alice Walker's, "Everyday Use", discusses how the narrator realizes that Maggie understands her own heritage. What does the narrator mean when she says, "Just like when I'm in church and the spirit of God touches me and I get happy and shout?" Does the narrator do something amazing that she has not done before? Some readers opine that the narrator knows what it really feels like to have family. Others say that the narrator recognizes the importance of giving. However, both these readings are not with the point. The narrator realizes that Maggie should have the quilts because they embody her heritage.

Culture plays a great role in the health of all individuals. The American race has a vast influence over other cultures that migrate to the United States. Unfortunately, the dietary habits of the average American can lead to an increased health risk and a variety of problems that will further be elaborated on. It is important to remember that health is not just the physical aspect that everyone assumes when they consider the word health. It actually has seven areas that include: mental, spiritual, intellectual, occupational, physical, emotional, and social. All of these come together to form the term almost every person knows, health.
There have been several things that I have found to be quite interesting in the first two units of this class. The topic of historic preservation and its history are very interesting, and I enjoy learning about every aspect of the profession. However, the topic which I find to be the most interesting is the schools of thought surrounding the field of preservation, and the ways in which individuals throughout history have worked to preserve historic places. It fascinates me to think of all the different views that individuals have in the ways in which they choose to save
