Hernando DeSoto Bridge on Interstate 40. The bridge on Interstate 40 is on the exit route from Memphis, as well as Tennessee completely, as it separates the city and state from the state of Mississippi. There were over 1,000 protesters that day in Memphis that marched against the violence against black men and women and black children. While this march was considered peaceful, they put many officers in danger by shutting down traffic on a busy Interstate 40 bridge. The violence in Memphis stints from great racial strain in the community due to the amount of crime and black on black killings that lead officers into very dangerous situations.
Following the Second World War in 1945, America emerged from the conflict as a prestigious superpower and saw the 1950s begin as an era of prosperity and wealth. However, the beginnings of the Cold War saw increased tension between the USA and the USSR and the capitalist and communist ideologies. These clashes along with the rise of nuclear power contributed to a tense and fearful atmosphere, giving rise to a period of McCarthyism. This saw communist ‘witch hunts’ and people accused and prosecuted for sympathising with the left political-economic model. Author Arthur Miller was one of such victims; in 1956 he was trialled and fined for refusing to give the names of communist sympathisers before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
In the small town of Waco, Texas who would have thought it was once well known for the structure of a bridge, the Waco Suspension Bridge to be exact. Up until 1870, the Brazos River was just a simple river that had no special meaning to it. The land around it was empty, occasionally you would find cattlemen pushing their cattle across stream, but that was only because you could not find one bridge that spanned the eight hundred miles of river flowing through Central Texas. This caused a serious transportation issue for merchants and travelers. It became clear that a better means of crossing the river was necessary.
The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel (HRBT) is 3.5 miles long crossing for Interstate 64 which connects the South Hampton Roads cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach with the Peninsula cities of Hampton and Newport News. One of the world’s first submerged tunnels connected to a man-made island. The HRBT was pristinely opened in 1957 superseding vehicular ferries that operated between Norfolk on the Southside, Hampton and Newport News on the Peninsula. The HRBT was tolled from 1957 until the second span opened in 1976, and the tolls were abstracted (Kozel, 1997). The James River Bridge (JRB) is 4.5 miles and Virginia’s longest state-maintained bridge; it opened in 1928 as

The article “Just a Half a Mile from the Mississippi Bridge”: The Mississippi River Valley Origins of Rock and Roll” was written by Dr. Michael Allen Ph.D. who is a history professor of the School of Arts and Sciences, at the University of Washington, Tacoma. The article is part of a work that Allen is currently working on titled, “Mississippi River Valley: The Course of American Civilization”, which discusses the significance and relevance of the Mississippi River area in American history. Because Allen is writing from the geographic distance of the Northwest, he may have a more objective viewpoint of historical events than someone who is living inside Southern culture. The article was written in 2015 for the Southern Quarterly, which is a
I was merely walking to work when I thought I saw death. I never saw so much horror and disgust as I walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge over the Alabama River on March 7, 1965. I was never a part of the march, I was going to work but as a black man that didn't matter.
In the midst of corruption sits a Great Bridge towering over the landscape as millions of people commute over it, clueless of how deep the crime beneath it runs. In the midst of immigrants sits a bridge that connects one economic powerhouse to another with the ideas and dreams of a German-born immigrant that never got to see his dream completed. In the midst of the mighty East River stands the East River Bridge as a towering monument of mans' ability to make even nature bend toward its iron-like will. In the midst of all this stands the Brooklyn Bridge in all of its glory as the pinnacle of industrial and engineering mastery of that time period and as a testament to the lives of the people that lived through a time of intense corruption, new
There was an altercation with a police officer and the assault of transgender African American man in the jail facility. Memphis also had the shooting of a young African American male after a traffic stop, which ultimately ended with the young man dying. Not to mention the city has been in continuously heated debates surrounding the removal of a Nathan Bedford Forrest statue in a public park. To some the figure represents history, to others, it is the constant reminder of a dark period in America’s past where he was recognized as a Confederate Army General and a leader of the Ku Klux Klan. The City of Memphis also made national news when protestors from all over the city and country met in Memphis to rally and eventually shut down traffic on Interstate forty bridge from Memphis to Texas for five hours. They were protesting the treatment of African Americans by law enforcement. Now factor in the twenty-one thousand dollar income per capita, and six-point thirty percent unemployment rate compared to five point twenty nationally(Sperling's,
The I-35W Mississippi river bridge also known as Bridge 9340 officially was an eight-lane, steel truss arch bridge which carried the Interstate 35W across the Mississippi river connected the downtown east and Marcy-Holmes. Its construction began in the year 1964, was finally opened in 1967. It connected the northeast of Metrodome on its south end and the University of Minnesota on the North end. The bridge was the boundary of “Mississippi Mile” downtown riverfront parkland. The north foundation of the bridge was near the hydroelectric plant built in 1988. The south abutment was in an area polluted by the coal gas processing plant. There weren’t any mentions of this in the failure investigations. The bridge was a continuous truss bridge that had a total span of 1,907 ft. It was an 8-lane bridge having a width of 113.3ft. and was 115 ft. high. It was designed by Sverdrup & Parcel to 1961 AASHO (American Association Of State Highway Officials) standard specifications. The construction contract worth more than US $5.2 million at the time, went to Hurcon Inc. and Industrial Construction Company, which built the steel trusses and deck. The piers were not built in the navigation channel instead the center span of the bridge consisted of a single 456- foot steel truss over a 390-foot channel being the longest span of the bridge.
On Monday, October 10, the contractor for the I-75 Express Lanes Project will begin painting the sound barrier walls along the east side of I-75 between NW 170 Street and Florida’s Turnpike. Please note, in order to complete this work efficiently, tree limbs hanging on or near the sound barrier walls will be trimmed. Residents wanting to trim their tree limbs themselves must do so before the scheduled date mentioned above.
The man on the bridge is anonymous until the second part of the story because I think that author wants us to get to know who he is before we know his name, pretending like we know him when we actually do not.
Context is the background information of the article. While understanding the text, you would want to know the setting environment and the framework in order to understand the story. While reading and comprehending the text, you would want to remember this information. An example in the story could be knowing what time the author wrote the story and what major events happened then.
Anyone who has driven on a San Antonio road knows how unpredictable drivers can be. The Impatients, and aggravation sometimes get the best of a driver. For a San Antonio police officer accidents are nothing short of ordinary. There are however a small few that stand out above the others. This hot Saturday in July was busier than usual. With months without rain, the roads were extremely dry. The day was relatively busy, but there were no major incidents. That is until four o'clock when calls started flowing in for a major accident. Officers thought it couldn’t have been anything too massive considering the light traffic and ideal road conditions. This accident however was far from normal. This strange wreck was something you would only see in the movies.
Thornton Wilder’s Bridge of San Luis Rey is framed by Brother Juniper’s analysis of the deaths of the main characters. The collapse of the bridge helps explore how each of the main characters comes to succeed or fail at coping with the loss of the ones they love, as well as how their views on love shaped them. Parallels will first be drawn between the collective experiences of the characters, followed by an overview the responses to their respective conflicts. Women such as the Abbess, and the Perichole will also be explored despite not being present on the bridge. While not quite sharing the same aims as Brother Juniper’s investigation, the collapse of the bridge did indeed happen for reasons relating to the victims themselves.
The Toledo Bridge was designed by Juan Gómez de Mora and built by José Villarreal; The bridge has classic ornaments to continue with the aesthetics of the interior of Gattaca just like the cold material of the stone that transmits the coldness of genetic discrimination to work in Gattaca. Another aspect I like about the bridge is the symmetrical structure that reminds me of DNA. I think it is ideal that there are plants since it conveys that everything that has born without genetic control is out of Gattaca. I would add an arched panel to cover all the holes of a color similar to the bridge so that it continues with the same aesthetic.
