Heroism In Star Wars By Luke Skywalker

A hero is defined as someone who in the face of danger steps up and puts others needs before theirs, expecting no reward in return. In the article “What Makes a Hero?” by Phillip Zimbardo, the author expresses that everyone has the ability to help others, whether it is a small deed like leading a guiding hand to someone who needs it, or it can be as intense as pulling someone out of a burning car. The writer attempts to emphasize the importance of doing the right thing by stating,  “Few people do evil and fewer act heroically.” (Zimbardo). In addition, heroes act not for the fame or the money, but for their own satisfaction. Heroes do what's right, even if they put themselves in danger. For example, in everyday life, people like firemen, paramedics and soldiers risk their lives for the common people every day. Heroes are willing to give something up for the greater good of others.

Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Ghandi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” Almost anyone can be a hero, as long as they have the courage and the maturity to understand and respect those who they attempt to help. Despite the fact that a hero cannot save everyone, being heroic is about placing others before oneself and strive to help those who need it the most.

Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is not the urge to surpass others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Someone who stays strong in their heart and shows selflessness towards others even though he or she could be in the risk of personal risk and danger is what makes a true hero. Anyone could be recognized and admired as a hero if they could, but there's a big gap in front of that because it adds on with the hero showing compassion in spite of the obstacles that they are faced with. It could make someone more heroic than he or she ever was by just showing selflessness to others. Clara Barton put herself in danger to treat the wounded during the Civil War and not only that, but she founded what is known today the American Red Cross (History.com). Harriet Tubman helped many slaves to freedom in the north, also placing herself in peril. (History.com). Florence Nightingale, who was a nursing innovator did the similar as Clara Barton, but during the Crimean War (History.com & Biography.com). All of these women stressed the idea of helping others before they did so for themselves, but that took bravery to do so. Whether the challenges that a hero has to endure, a true hero puts others before themselves no matter what the position he or she is set in.

What is heroism? Is it a knight in shining armor? A man that has a tragic past and has now stumbled upon powers? Or perhaps the guy who was able to save the whole earth from total destruction? As Arthur Ashe once said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Heroism is always being willing to help others and disregarding their safety for the safety of others, but heroes are not always the main guy who does gigantic actions.

Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States once said, “Heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion.” People aren't heroes everyday. They have their moments of being a hero, some of their moments are big, others are small. Heroism is having perseverance, being selfless and sometimes sacrificing the things important to you.

When one thinks of being a hero what comes in mind is a few bold character traits, they must be able to push through the hard times in a situation life, put oneself at risk for other people, and have the will to do things and not be told or asked to do something. Although more times than not heroes go very unrecognized.“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” by Christopher Reeve. I agree with this quote, one can't just do nothing to be a hero they must have the will to go out of their way to be a hero. Even if that means they have to go through some challenging obstacles to get there.

Everyone has the chance to be a hero at anytime during their lives. It's their actions and what they do that could lead them to becoming a Hero. They could battle for righteousness, honesty, or justice against forces of evil. Whether they are a hero in a book or in our society they have the qualities that make him or her the proper person to reach his or her goal. To illustrate, in the classic American novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is the hero due to his qualities and determination.

What is a hero? A hero is not somebody with the ability to fly, run really fast, or control other people's minds,... A hero is a random person that rises to the occasion and performs the action(s) of superhero proportions. “The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.” (Woodrow Wilson). I agree with Woodrow that to be truly heroic, one must have leaderships, bravery, intelligence,... to solve common problems in our society. There are many examples of heroes in our modern day world as well as fictional characters. For instances, Odysseus in the Odyssey, Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and my mom have those characteristics of heroism.

Many have tried to describe what a hero should be but who really is a hero? Heroism isn’t just possessing great qualities like enormous physical strength and being extremely powerful. Rather, it is the conviction to put other people’s needs ahead of one’s own. A hero is considered to be someone who is strong, brave and honorable who shares our beliefs and is ready to stand up for what is good, noble and just. Many such heroes have existed and they continue to arise time and time again.

Heroes are everywhere; they are the person sitting on the bus, a man walking down the street, or the person sitting in class. Heroes are not only people who wear capes. Heroes do not even need to have powers. There is not a specific definition of heroism or what a hero is. For someone to be a hero they need to have amazing characteristic traits. Heroes can be just a genuine person, who does something amazing out of the ordinary one day. Or someone standing up or fighting for what they believe in. Although heroism means having the courage or the will to fight instead of taking flight, taking charge of a situation and being a leader, it never means letting people in need down.

Heroism exists everywhere, despite the time period or occurrence. Many people believe that heroism can only be one concept or a certain type of person, but heroism is all around us in all shapes and forms. A hero is someone who helps people in some way. They can risk something, even their own lives. Heroes improve the world and make it a better place for at least one person, or they can prevent it from being even worse. However, a hero is not someone who is utterly evil or someone who sits around all day, doing nothing.

According to Alex Lickerman “the willingness to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others” (page 1) is what makes a hero. Which means the action itself and not the hero, make him or her heroic. For example “single mothers who deny themselves vacations, clothes and even food to send their children to college” (Lickerman, page 2). These mothers are not flawless or perfect, but are considered heroic. Every mistake a hero makes, are made with the wish to help others. This proves that anyone can be heroes as long as they serve others at a cost to themselves.

A hero is someone who is looked up to for their admirable qualities. Heroes come in all different shapes and sizes and we all have them, whether they are police officers, firefighters, soldiers, or even family members. When we were little, our idea of a hero was a bit different, we tended to look up to fictional superheroes such as superman, batman, and the x-men. We all loved to see them kick their enemies’ butts episode after episode or page after page in a comic book. These individuals were great inspirations to kids all around the world. But many of us forget, that not all heroes work alone, some work as a group.
