Hi Kristalyn, I agree. I think it is very important for us to determine if the person is a danger to themselves or society because if the person is inaccurately evaluated, then it can have horrible consequences. In order to properly evaluate them, I believe the person should be given certain neurological tests by medical staff. And I think they should undergo a trial period to determine if they have overcome their psychotic break. Furthermore, I agree that most families now in days are constantly on the move doing something, so it is very important to determine whether the person needs someone by their side constantly. If that is the case, then I believe the person should either hire a medical professional or remained hospitalized, so they
Mental illness is a hard process, not just for the person, but the family as well. We don’t want to see anyone we know and love go through these type of things. Having been able to see a family member that suffers from a mental illness, it is a sad sight. It literally eats them alive, to the point where they cannot see their value anymore. We tend to put our personal feelings before their well-being, but not in a selfish way, it is a way where we don’t want to
In the video, “The New Asylums”, it demonstrated how deinstitutionalization has left thousands of mentally ill patients in the hands of the prison system. As the mental health hospitals closed down, the police department and prison system has become responsible for the mentally ill people that are on the streets. There was a firm point made about the release of mentally ill patients- “When hundreds of thousands of mentally ill are released, they do not magically become healthy. They went to the streets, became homeless, and turned to a system that cannot say no.” The video also stated that today, there are nearly 500,000 mentally ill people being held in jails and prisons throughout the country. Furthermore, there was no safety net for those
Mental Illness is a condition that needs to be treated and carefully watched. In the instance of something happening to one of the patients, the first action would be to get a specialist from the hospital. Removing these patients from the hospital is also prolonging the problem, whereas they can be in the hospital to give specialist time study them and to apply theories they learnt while obtaining their education level. Is this the government’s way of saying that these people do not matter and that they can store them in communities to make room in the hospital for normal people with easier treatable
Diagnosing an individual with a mental illness balances on a fine line between giving a life-long label and misdiagnosing. Mental illness is best viewed on a continuum allowing for a varying degree of severity. In the field, mental health professionals are faced with determining what signifies the appropriateness of diagnosing a mental illness. A professional’s judgment is impacted by their personal perceptions and observations, societies views and norms, and the patient’s history. The film, “How Mad Are You? A Search for Insanity” demonstrates the difficulties in distinguishing those who are mentally ill from those seen as healthy ( ). I will explore my reactions and thoughts regarding the participants’ experience as well as the mental health professionals. Additionally, I will share how this information is applicable to my future career in the field of social work.
If you can evaluate, medicate and hospitalize those individuals who show signs of mental illness before they become dangerous than it can possibly decrease the amount of crimes committed from mentally ill or defected individuals. According to the American Law Institute a person is not criminally responsible for criminal act if at the time of such conduct as a result of mental disease of defect where in this case would be his schizophrenia.
While most people are concerned and want violent offenders punished and thrown in prison (which is a valid concern), it is rare that violent acts are committed by the mentally ill. For those crimes the mentally ill commits, prison may not always be the right answer; instead, proper treatment and rehabilitation would be much better. In general, the statement has always been made that the
Around the 1970’s and 1980’s around the United States many mental hospitals were shut down. There were many reasons why they closed these Asylums was because money, and knowing that there was only about twenty county asylums were built around the country. The asylums also known as the Looney bin was established in Britain after passing in 1808 county asylum act. There were so many patients in these asylums around the world in 1955 about 558,239 severely mentally ill people in the United States were accounted for. Now in these times any mentally ill people don’t get help they just go straight to jail without proper diagnosis or treatment. People need to know these people need extreme care and treatment. Even regular people or considered the norm in today’s society eventually go crazy when they’re in prison too long. We have as much people that are mentally ill as regularly incarcerated. There is one prison in Houston Texas that does take care there mentally ill. We have about 2.2 million
As social workers, it is important to study the entire aspect of the individual. We must examine the individual past and see if their condition is trauma-related. It is the job of the social worker to identify the issue, in this case it would be a person who suffers from a mental illness and is placed in isolation when in jail or person and find the best solution for that issue. The solution to the issue may not be what’s written in a handbook or what we were thought, but sometimes we must find alternate resolutions. While we may not have the answers to combat the issue; if as social workers we could find the root cause of the issue that may help in the intervention process.
The point is, we need to target the source of the problem, not the tools used. We need to talk about mental illness and how we can help provide services, resources and other support to those who need it. One mother posted her struggles with her mentally ill son onto her website titled “The Anarchist Soccer Mom.” She writes about how her son transitions between a sweet boy who loves Harry Potter and a terrifying, screaming boy who threatens to kill her. She pleads for people to realize the real problem behind mass
family are directly impacted. Dealing with a mentally ill patient can be very stressful, especially
I am a mentally ill person myself, and there are several ways to treat a person that is mentally ill and where to place them when they have gotten into a fight with a family member or with a friend while on a night out whether it is a girl or a guys night out and one of the friends has way too much to drink and that is when something happens whether it will be a fight or that person will go on a rant that ended up hurting or killing someone and that person that
Each year defendants claim to be mentally insane so they may receive medical treatment for their illness instead of serving jail or prison time. It is my belief that all mentally ill citizens should have the right to be medically treated. Although, not all of these people should be allowed back into society after they have reached their sanity. Some extreme cases such as the case of John Wayne Gacy who was proven insane should still never be let back onto the public streets. John Wayne Gacy murdered and raped 33 young men from the Chicago area then plead and Gacy was found insane. Thankfully Gacy’s insanity was ignored and he was sentenced to death. Some cases of insanity should be sentenced properly with treatment after being proven insane by a psychiatric team, but extreme cases should still be treated the same as any sane person.
I believe that police officers should be forced to learn about mental illnesses because it seems like they are scared of individuals who have them since they are not informed. In comparison to the general public, people with psychiatric disorders are more likely to be victims in violent crimes rather than perpetrators; police officers seem to fear those who have mental illnesses because they do not know this fact and they don't fully understand mental illnesses. I think that everyone who commits a violent crime should be forced to have an MRI scan done. After the MRI scan, the mental state of the individual should be determined. If there are identical brain similarities between a defendant with schizophrenia and a defendant with chronic substance
Too many times in today’s society people don’t consider mental illness to be anything other than, voices in one’s head, or being a suicidal maniac. But actually it goes a lot farther than that. People who have a mental illness have gotten worse over the past 20 years, not that the illness has gotten any worse, because it hasn’t, but what it has pushed people to do has been drastically different. One common thing that is very controversial in America today is if someone has murdered, and they have a mental illness, should their punishment be the same as anyone else, or they be acquitted because of their illness.
Immigration is a controversial topic that has impacted our society for decades perplexed by policies media coverage, perceptions based on one’s own lack of knowledge, personal experiences and a host of other factors that influence how our society views immigrants and immigration policies. The United States is a diverse population of people and filled with experiences that come from various walks of life that contribute to enhancing our social culture, economic development, and cultural acceptance.
