Over the course of this semester, I have learned about the theoretical foundation of leadership and management. From various leadership styles to numerous learning tools have all aided in shaping me to become an effective leader not only in the health care profession, but everyday life as well. Through utilizing these tools, I have managed to put them into actions through working individually and in teams which has helped me to learn more about myself and the type of leader I am. Strong leadership is vital to the success of any business, institution, school, team, or even church. Leaders that are considered effective encompass a leadership style and qualities that work to influence and motivate their followers. Joel Osteen, an evangelical pastor from Houston, Texas is truly one of the 21st centuries most captivating leaders. I want those around me to know that quality comes before quantity and that things such as mental health and stress are very important to me. I want those that work with me to know that not only will I be a structured leader, but also that I am supportive and want everyone to be able to slow down life enough to enjoy it. I think that it is very important to realize that taking a break and then having the energy to produce better work later is more effective than constantly working and putting in less effort. This experience has taught me that I need to start slowing down my own life more, and that being an effective leader means that you need to support others as well as yourself. As we discussed in class, there are a multitude of characteristics that define a good leader, but one that has always stood out to me are those that are compassionate and supportive of those around them. I have always believed in the phrase to lead by example and I believe that by showing others it is okay to slow down as the Ted talk said, as well as being more supportive in my structured style will allow those that work with me to lead a healthier more effective life. There have been times in my life in which I have sat back and watched things happen. I often wondered why they happened. I now realize that it is important to be a leader. Effective teachers need to take charge and make things happen. I am becoming a teacher to make things happen and not sit back and let them happen as I used to do. My parents divorced when I was 11 and my mother left for Europe to be with her family. She definitely moved to USA when I was 16. I was really close to her while growing up so after she left I did not really have a female figure to look up too or to share my worries with. I grew up in the city and I was going to a private school; being the kid without a mother at home made me feel different but that was not something you could talk about in my dad’s house. He is a proud man and he put that pride in us so we had to keep our heads up all the time. Still, I had people talking on my back. I started keeping to myself from there and doing everything on my own without asking anyone help because that is how my dad wanted us to be: educated, successful, proud and independent so we wouldn’t have to deal with failure or rejection. I realize today that as people, we will always need someone’s help at some point in our life, and pride is not everything. It is hard letting go of old habits, but I am trying to be more of a people person because we can also learn from failure and rejection. They are all part of life.
