Ernest Hemingway’s short story “Hills like White Elephants” discusses the decision one girl must make and the consequences which accompany her choice. A “white elephant” is a valuable possession which its owner cannot dispose of but whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) exceeds its usefulness. The “white elephant” in Hemingway’s story is the unnamed situation and the choice which Jig, the protagonist, must make. This drama takes place in Spain in the 1920’s, during which time the majority of the population was strongly Catholic. Jig’s “white elephant” is her unborn child. I believe that Jig chooses to carry her child to term, and live her life as a happy, single mother. By the time she makes it to the train station with the America, Jig is ready for a change in lifestyle and priorities. It is evident in the dialogue that Jig and the American bicker constantly. Jig has had enough of the arguing when she asks the American if he would, “please please please please please please please stop talking” (212). Jig spends over half of their conversation at the station attempting to convince the American to go with her to the sunny valley. While gazing toward the hills, she tries to persuade him by saying, “we could have all of this . . . [a]nd we could have everything and every day we make it more impossible. We can have the whole world” (212). This is Jig’s final attempt to sway the American to stay with her and their child, and upon his denial of her request, she decides to walk this course alone. When the American asks if she is feeling any better and Jig replies, “I feel fine . . . There’s nothing wrong with me” (213), she realises that the child is not a white elephant, but instead, a blessing. The fear of being alone sometimes pressures us into living a life of self-sacrifice. Social criticism can sometimes pressure us into doing things that go against our personal beliefs.
