In the beginning of Hamlet, Hamlet is told a gruesome tale detailing the poisoning of his father by Claudius - all through the ghost of Hamlet’s father. At this instance, this present a mere possibility on how King Hamlet died. Hamlet is uncertain of the authenticity of this testament, but feels obligated to seek revenge for his father’s death. Throughout Hamlet, Hamlet gains the confidence to murder King Claudius through becoming increasingly certain of his uncle’s convictions.
Hamlet is initially willing to gain revenge on King Claudius, as seen with Hamlet’s encounter with the apparition of his deceased father. This becomes evident when he pledges his commitment to King Hamlet. “Now to my word; / It is 'Adieu, adieu! remember me.' / I have sworn 't.” (I.v.110-112) The ‘word’ refers to the request made by the apparition to “remember [him]”. By swearing allegiance to his father, he is effectively pledging to keep the legacy of his father. Learning that his father was murdered by his uncle, Hamlet decides that he will preserve his father’s legacy through seeking revenge on King Claudius. On the contrary, considering the fact that it was a ghost that told the tale of his father’s death, although not explicitly stated, Hamlet, at this moment, cannot be certain of whether the apparition’s story is fully credible.
