In my opinion, historical perspective best enhances our understanding of events in the twentieth-century Canadian history. Historical perspective means understanding what it may have been like from the perspective of someone at the time of the historical event, what impacted them, and how they felt. For example, while learning about the roaring twenties you must make an effort to understand why citizens were spending so much money. Presently, it makes more sense to save money rather than spend it. This is because job opportunities were often scarce, with the example of fresh college grads startled by the lack of jobs (Newman Rick, 2016) and the goods and service’s prices being fairly high. However, the 1920s were a time of cultural and emotional
I figured it was appropriate that the author did not place the blame on one party. Instead, he addressed the various individuals in Canada that were not providing a fair education in its national and political history as well as for the reasons why this is such a big deal. This book was educational as it gave readers brief and sometimes precise examples, like how Canadians lack national and political conscience within the academic curriculum. The Country’s educational system needs to do a better job training its educators and ultimately restructuring curriculums to deal with our current problems. The book's exterior appearance is bright red, and often red, is associated with power. I believe that this book has the authority to make readers think about their experience concerning Canadian history - but unfortunately, a majority of the population does not know enough of its history to learn from the mistakes and successes of our predecessors. Along with the strengths of this book (argumentative perspective, educational, and exterior appearance), there were a few weaknesses as well. To elaborate on Granasteins effort, I believe he wrote from an androcentric perspective. There were times when he sounded like a grumpy old historian man. I think his little rants reduced the effectiveness of the book. He made many prejudice remarks concerning multiculturalism and social history (gender studies, urban, economics, demographics, etc.). Since history is an accumulation of time periods and each period varies in length, and the intensity of the events, it might be tough to establish the nation's needs for clear, measurable standards for history. There is only so much information that an individual’s brain can retain for a period before they start losing
Until the 1980s Canadian historians had a tendency to concentrate on economic history, including labour history, because Canada had far less military or governmental conflicts than other societies, particularly in the first half of the twentieth century when economic history was overwhelmingly dominant. McBride and Shields describe the growth of the Canadian State’s role in society and economy as a sequence of National Policies. Prime Minster John A. Macdonald had defined Canada’s economic platform for years by creating a structure that was defined as a National Policy system that would protect costs that would encourage the expansion of Canadian manufacturing. MacDonald’s National Policy contained three parts that would help with the building
Theodor Seuss Geisel “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” said by the famous Theodor Geisel or also known as Dr. Seuss. He has changed the world greatly by writing books that would make kids think and imagine things in a light they never had before. His books were always illustrated with eye catching colors, popping pictures, and interesting titles that made you want to read. All of his books are easy for any level of reader to read.
The 1920s were prosperous times for Canada and many other countries around the world. Canadian economy, thanks to its vast storage of natural resources, was striving to the extent that the 1920s was nicknamed “The Roaring 20s”. The 1920s era not only provided Canada with an amazing trade relationship, but also led to the development of different movements & inventions that shook the world and shaped the way we live today. These impacting events include artwork, social change, women’s rights, prohibition, the Model T car, the radio, silent film, medical advances and the telephone. Though all these phenomena worked together to make the 20s “roar”, but in particular women’s rights, medical advances and the telephone made the most prominent impact on the past and present society.
I felt like I had a basic understanding of what Retorical analysis meant before watching the video simply by using common knowledge. For instance, I was aware that rhetorical means to place emphasis in order to persuade and analysis is to dissect and study in depth so it was pretty self explanatory I felt. However I did not know exactly how to go about writing an effective RA much less how to properly format it. So after watching the video I found it interesting to learn that RA is for the most part what I thought it was.
In 1919, World War I had finally come to an end, leaving most of the world in a post war depression. However, in countries like Canada, the decade ahead would be filled with amazing growth and change in many ways. The 1920s were an exciting time in Canada because of the economic prosperity, technological, social and cultural revolutions and growing political responsibility and change in policy that country experienced. These economic, social and political changes really made the 1920s in Canada “roar”.
Looking Backwards, Moving Forward 1. Over the years, nursing has changed in many aspects, but the care and compassion that nurses give to their patients hasn't. 2. The quote the author starts the profile thesis on sets the tone for the essay. She is interviewing a woman that has been in the nursing profession for a long time.
The 1920s, nicknamed the Roaring Twenties, was full of new inventions, trends, and developments. It was a booming decade for Canadians, although some groups missed out on the fun and carefree experience. Unfortunately, the Aboriginals and immigrants faced brutal discrimination. As most Canadians did not experience consumerism, leisure, and rebellion, it is clear that to a certain extent, the 1920s weren't so "roaring".
Post-war years have significant impacts on a society’s economy, bringing an abundance of celebration, cherished moments and highlighting the end of the plagued events of war and loss. With the end of such an afflicted time period, the arrival of solidarity and unification in society usually follows. The Roaring Twenties accomplished many positive changes in Canadian society, building the path it needs to follow to become a great nation and progress into the future. The time period was regarded as a time of excitement and prosperity concerning the fads, fashions, and entertainment, as well as the freedom many people gained with the end of the war. Furthermore, the Roaring Twenties can also be seen as a time of positive change due to a variety of factors such as Canada’s developing autonomy and political relationship with Britain, pushing Canada to become an independent nation. Another factor would be the Canadian industries and economy that flourished during the 1920s which allowed many Canadian businesses to prosper and enabled Canadians to acquire and enjoy an improved quality of life. Finally, the change in societal status and role of women established the starting point of gender equality between men and women, as well as the recognition of the various contributions that women were capable of bringing to society.
Through the eyes of many, the 1920s had a major impact on Canadian history. It was a time of change and the beginning of a new era. The standard of living for Canadians was reshaped, Canada’s chief trading partner changed, and the Canadian resources grew which all contributed to the growth of the economy during this time. Women’s role in Canada drastically changed through the Person’s Case, the Federal Divorce Law and The Dominion Elections Act. Canada’s autonomy from Britain was a result of The Halibut Treaty, The King-Byng Crisis and The Balfour Declaration. The 1920’s had a positive impact on the development of Canadian society because of the economic changes, the evolution of women’s role in society and the autonomy
History has shaped Canada by molding essential components that represent Canada today, such as Canadian identity, values, and society. However, even though everything in history has effects on the present, there are major forces throughout the 1900s that have largely contributed in shaping Canada today. This involves, the victory in Vimy Ridge, women’s changing roles, and the growing economy during 1920s. As a result, these forces that shaped Canada throughout the 1900s, determined Canada today by molding key components that represent Canada.
Many events shaped Canada to be the way it is now, but which ones really made the difference? Canada used to be discriminatory when it came to immigration, now they are open to every race without question. It is now multicultural with large populations of many backgrounds. Canada is known for having a mix of cultures, as it accepts them instead of trying to mix them all together like the US has done. Women’s rights have changed significantly since the beginning of the 20th century. Suffrage groups had been around since the 1800’s, but through the 1900’s, women completely changed the way that they were viewed and the way that Canada treats women today. Thirdly, after World war one, the government became a much larger part of Canadians’ lives,
This essay will show you how Canada was at the turn of the century in 1896 to 1919. A lot of points show how Canada was at the turn of the century such as how Canada was at a time of social change, the immigrants in Canada come from all over the world, Chinese were treated horribly, a lot of racism factored into this. Also, Canada was in a time of economic uprise, this can be characterized by electricity, inventions, the growth of cities, and some other contributing factors. Free trade laws with the United States were also in a heavy debate at the time.
Pride is essential to all humans in any lifestyle. Without pride, self-confidence would not exist. Many successful products are made by the creator taking risks. Without self-confidence there will not be as much risk taken to create something new. It is not wrong to take pride in one’s work, as it acts as a sense of satisfaction for the accomplishment. Also without pride there would be a lack of self-esteem within a person. There are many positives for the need of pride. However with pride categorized as one of the seven deadly sins, there is a negative aspect to it. Having too much pride causes people to think highly
