The Catcher in the Rye is written by J.D Salinger and is a coming-of-age novel. This book portrays Holden Caulfield, a sixteen-year-old protagonist, who gets expelled from his fourth school. After this incident, Holden goes on a journey in New York before heading home to face the consequences from his parents. Throughout his odyssey, for investigating the meaning of life, Holden is accommodated by three people- Dick Slagle, James Castle, and his younger sister, Phoebe. These three characters left in imprint on him. To commence, Holden sees two nuns with cheap suitcases at a train station while eating breakfast. This makes him think about his old roommate attending one of his old schools, Dick Slagle. James Castle calls a very conceited boy, conceited. Being very angry about this, the boy and his group of friends ganged up on Castle to take back what he said. James finally, “… instead of taking back what he said, he jumped out the window” (Salinger 188). Holden barely knew the guy. Though, after his pitiful death, Holden feels closer to James because he dies while wearing one of Holden’s turtleneck sweaters. Holden’s perspective of the world now, is bitter. James Castle lost his innocent life to a bunch of phonies. Lastly, Holden’s younger sister, Phoebe, has a great outcome on Holden. She is the reason why Holden decides to stay back with her instead of fleeing into another state. Towards the end of the book, Holden takes Phoebe to ride a carousel at a zoo. During this ride, everyone was trying to grab a golden ring. Holden sees Phoebe reaching out for the ring. Terrified of her falling, Holden voted not to say or do anything.
