Stanley Yelnats has a history of being in the wrong place and the wrong time. He was even wrongly accused of stealing a pair of old sneakers that was owned by a baseball player. He was sent to a juvenile correction center, Camp Green Lake. On Camp Green Lake there is nothing green and no lake, there are also no metal bars, electric fences, and no guard towers, all there is are a few cabins and tents in the middle of nowhere. If the campers tried to run they would be “buzzard food”. Each day every camper has to dig a hole that is five feet in all directions and five feet deep. The Warden says its to build character, but really it is because the Warden is secretly searching for something.
Stanley’s family has an interesting history through

The deal was for Elya to carry the pig up a moutain so it can drink from it’s river every day for the next forty days, then after forty days he was to carry the old gypsy, Madame Zeroni, up the moutain so she could drink from it’s river, she warned Elya if he failed to do this that he will have bad fortunes even through the generations. This history weaves in and out of Stanley’s present life.
I recommend you read this book because it is written beautifully, weaving in and out of Stanley Yelnats’ generations, from his great-great-grandfather’s life to his own, and how they tie together. This is also a great book because the characters are so real, from the Camp Green Lake campers, to the Green Lake townspeople. There are many characters with very unique personalities. The kids from Camp Green Lake are very tough, like one of the kids Rex or X-ray is the leader, Magnet is a thief he got his nickname because he says his fingers are like magnets. There is also Zigzag, Armpit, Squid, and Zero. Zigzag, Armpit, and Squid are very muscular and tough from spending so many days at Camp Green Lake, they also are very loud and talkative unlike Zero. Zero is very silent and runs away one day, Stanley also runs away in search of Zero. Stanley also finds out that Zero was really the one who stole the shoes Stanley supposedly stole, by putting them on top of a car and the car was at an overpass when the
In the story Holes, Stanley is framed as a juvenile delinquent who is found guilty of stealing the famous Clyde Livingston’s shoes. He is sent to Camp Green Lake for 18 months to serve his punishment. At Camp Green Lake, it is a detention center for juvenile delinquents who have committed a crime. The Warden runs the Camp. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of a desert in Texas. It used to be a city called Green Lake Town, and Green Lake, where Camp Green Lake is on. The town dried up over time, and now all that is left is a dry desert. At Camp Green Lake, you must dig holes at the dry, dusty, and hard lake beds of Green Lake. Each hole must be 5 by 5 feet. Stanley meets Zero at Camp Green Lake, who also had committed a crime. One day, when Stanley is
A good novel consists of exciting characters, an interesting setting, plot and story line, but most importantly a good novel conveys certain ideas about different messages the author is trying to get across, Louis Satcher in the novel holes does exactly this. Throughout the novel Satcher is constantly conveying the message of racial tolerance and intolerance, perseverance and has used clever techniques such as linking references from the past with the present to create an interesting novel filled with important themes about life.
In the Film Holes different filmic conventions are used to portray characters and construct atmosphere. The film is about a young boy named Stanley Yelnats who follows a journey like his great great great grandfather did. He was sent to Camp Green Lakes for a crime that he did not commit and when he arrived at camp he uncovered some of his family secrets. Techniques such as camera angles, sound effects and color constructs the characters and atmosphere in the film which creates the mood. These film codes are very important in the film as they help the viewer understand the story and conventions better.
One character named Hector, or Zero, is a friend of Stanley in the camp that didn't know how to read or write before Stanley taught him. Later in the story, Zero explains how his mother left him when he was very young, and ever since, he hasn't been able to learn how to read or write. He continues telling Stanley of how he lived on his own, without any guardians. Stanley Yelnats, another character went from a bullied kid because of his looks, to someone who made strong bonds and trusts with new friends. Stanley is strong, and would take any challenge to save his friends. This is shown when Stanley and Zero ran from the camp, and tried to get to a source of water on a mountain. Zero passes out, and Stanley "took hold of Zero's forearms and pulled him upright... He stood up, lifting Zero's worn-out body off the ground." Stanley later finds water, and quickly fed Zero the water. This shows how much Stanley cares about his friends, and how strong he is to save them. To sum up, a lot of the characters' backstories are very interesting, and explains a lot in the story. This is one reason why I believe you should read the book Holes.
There are six main characters in the book, John Cotton, who is a 16 year counselor at the camp who is the leader of the group. Stephen Lally, Jr., is the older brother of Billy Lally, and goes by Lally 1 he has a very violent behavior one time when John Cotton did not let him send a letter home he killed everyone in the cabins pets. and Billy Lally, who is the younger brother of Stephen Lally, he goes by Lally 2, he is also the youngest in the group. His parents despite them being rich do not give him the attention he wants, so he and his
In ‘Holes’ it is said that “if you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy”. In what ways does Stanley Yelnats change and develop as a character during the course of the novel? Do you think the punishment the boys receive at Camp Green Lake is an effective way of preventing crime?
Have you ever been blamed for something you didn’t do? That’s exactly the situation Stanley Yelnats found himself in, in Louis Sachar’s Holes. In Holes, Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake, a correctional facility for troubled youth. Camp Green Lake is in the middle of nowhere, dry, and desolated. Throughout the book, Stanley is faced with many challenges, that he must overcome to survive, and escape Camp Green Lake. Holes has a strong theme of courage, it shows Stanley surviving, escaping, and overcoming the camp’s conditions, and his family’s curse.
Writing has many tools and devices that can be used to influence the purpose and meaning of the a piece of work. In the two pieces of work, "Private License Plate Scanners Amassing Vast Databases Open to Highest Bidders-which is written in a way that it is anti-license plate tracking- and "Who Has the Right to Track You?'-which is written to be for license plate tracking- many different tools and devices are used by the authors. These pieces of work describe the benefits and drawbacks of collecting data and tracking fellow citizens, but use different forms of pathos, ethos, and logos to portray what they are trying to say. Also, both articles state how many are opposed to this tracking, arguing that it is against the First Amendment,
“And as long as he’d come this far, he might as well look for Zero” (p.33). Squid, a member from his camp, asks Stanley if he could talk to his mother for him. Squid wrote his mother’s phone number on a piece of paper and asked Stanley to call his mum and tell her that he was sorry. Stanley promised he would (p.221). When the curse had been finished of the no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-great-grandfather, Stanley lived a normal life and it was good.
Stanley is in Camp Green Lake. Stanley was surprised that there wasn’t a lake “There is no lake at Camp Green Lake” Stanley said. So Stanley met new people their names were Armpit, Zigzag, and Zero they showed Stanley around the camp. Everybody at the camp had to dig holes. Stanley didn’t like digging holes because it will hurt his hand, feet, and he starts to get tired easily. The good thing for Stanley was he was big so it will be easier for him.
Life at Camp Green Lake is hard we must dig a hole 5 feet wide and 5 feed deep every day in the hot blazing sun. I don’t mind digging holes. I made a good friend his name is Stanley Yelnats I help him by digging his hole and he is helping me to read, it works out great he got sent to camp Green Lake
