Project Homeless Connect is a free resource fair for homeless and at-risk individuals and families. During this one-day event, clients are able to access an array of services ranging from ID services, housing services, resume workshops, clothing banks, vision check and health care to veterans’ services, child care, pet care and much more. They expect to encounter 1,000 clients at this year’s event. I believe that what I did was absolutely helpful to this event due to the number of people there and how important this event was to this Denver community. They practically begged for help for the cleanup crew since there weren’t a great deal of people doing it. I was originally in guest services, but when I talked to Hailey, she told me that she would love my help for the cleanup crew since I was younger than most of the volunteers there. I agreed to help immediately due to the importance of this position and how much they needed my help. This is an annual event that takes place at the Colorado Convention Center and it helps the homeless community in a way that other people wish they could have these free services. I do believe that what exactly I did at this event uses sociology as much, but what I did for the company and what they did represents sociology in a bigger way.
So I volunteered to do the cleanup crew for this event which was a long three-hour process that took an incredible amount of endurance and strength. My job was to Assist with tear-down after the event is over.
Housing first is a relatively recent change in the approach to ending homelessness that provides housing as quickly as possible for those who are experiencing homelessness. In this strategy, the importance is focused on the basic needs of immediate shelter for those who are homeless or have been deemed chronically homeless. With a variety of circumstances leading to homelessness, including substance abuse, mental illness, health related issues, and unexpected work related changes; determining a successful policy toward resettlement programs has produces scattered approaches with limited successful outcomes.
My capstone project is on homelessness and preventative methods. Research on the various factors that are associated with homelessness and how to best reduce or end the homeless situation. Research shows that there are many suggestions on methods to reduce homelessness (the Homeless First Program) which have proven to reduce the numbers in various states across America (Tsemberis, Gulcur & Nakae, 2004). The homelessness problems are multifaceted with overlapping of other factors such as mental illness and risks, which include substance abuse, health disparities, and victimization, all of which have a role in the homelessness (Canton, Dominguez, Schanzer, Hasin, Shrout, Felix, McQuistion, Opler & Hsu, 2005).
Hobo, beggar, and bum are just a few terms used in society today to describe the homeless community. Today, more and more individuals and families are becoming homeless and majority of them never imagined being homeless. This tragic event could happen to anyone. There is not a guide created to overcome the barriers of homelessness or a "how to manual" when an individual or family is faced with homelessness. "Homelessness occurs when people or households are unable to acquire and/or maintain housing" (End Homelessness, 2016).
Homeless in America is the most shameful problem that we try to ignore.Such as Arnold Abbot, a 90 year old man who went around making good for the homeless; and the couple Brenda Knokrl and her boyfriend Robert Bloch letting homeless people sleep on their porch. Getting fined for their effort to help. Homelessness continues to be a major issue in our country because we as people look down upon them and do not treat them as equals, we assume that they are in situations based on the addiction and dependency of drugs and alcohol. Not all homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, most of these homeless people are young adults with children and most people don't understand that homelessness goes
Topics for a final paper: I know other students are thinking the same thing, what am I going to write about to cover that many pages? Where am I going to find the information to support the subject? Will people be interested in the subject? The last question is what I am asking you, my fellow students.
1) I have been in various amounts of situations where I have experienced a culture shock, but the one that was most influencing my life was when I went to a homeless mission here in Las Vegas for the very first time to volunteer. I have always had a presumption on how the homeless lived and what they were like, but I could never have imagined what I experienced that day.
The followings are the possible extraneous variables that can be influenced the study include: Settings, present health status, and the tool using (tape recorder). Settings can influence the result of this study because homeless individuals who live on the streets roam around and they normally do not have a stable place to be. Fortunately, these particular homeless individuals can be controlled because they can be targeted at Salvation Army Ministries lunches serving streets in most of the Polk County. These individuals regularly roaming on these specific streets and corners to get lunch every day and they will be the best participants to recruit for this study. The present health status must also consider because if their basic needs such
In 2005, NCH (National Coalition for the Homeless) estimated 3.5 million people experience homelessness in the US every year (NCH,1). But what is homelessness? Jim Baumohl, a noted author, explained in Homelessness in America, the most common definition of homelessness used by researchers is the “absence of belonging to a specific place or to people” (NCH, 3). However, there is no set definition, due to the variety of living conditions a homeless person encounters, and the opinions of the researchers. As Baumohl pointed out, “homelessness is but the latest of many research topics in which the population of interest is not clearly defined” (NCH, 15).
At eleven-years-old, my world was turned upside when I first volunteered at the Manna Soup Kitchen and became aware of the substantial issue of homeless youth. While serving the beautiful food I helped prepare, I recognized one of my best friends who I volunteered in the Southwest Conservation Corp with as she waited in line with no parent in sight. After eating her meal, she went into the thick woods behind the kitchen where she still continues to live. Curiously, I followed her and witnessed the horrific reality of homeless youth for all she had was a tent and a blanket in below freezing weather. The matter of homeless youth carries great importance with me because it affects the lives of a substantial amount of my friends and peers.
Gender inequality, police brutality and transgender rights are just a few societal issues impacting the way our society functions today. However, the social issue I have chosen is homelessness, specifically the causes and effects of homelessness in America because of recent observations. Since moving to Akron, I have noticed that the amount of homeless individuals seems more present in urban areas. Considering this new observation, I began to wonder how people become homeless and how this affects not only Akron, but our society in general. Although the rates of homelessness are moderately decreasing, homelessness is a public issue because it influences our economy and public health. The stigma around mental illness plays a huge part in the rates of homelessness. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, about a quarter of the homeless population

Hesed house is a large homeless shelter located in Aurora, IL. Their mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and give people the chance of hope again. It is a national model for ending homelessness. It was a revolutionary change from the accepted “eats and sheets” to a comprehensive resource center. They offer therapy and resources for those battling addictions and mental illness and also provide employment training and medical assistance. The trained staff help identify barriers preventing their residents from regaining housing, help them develop a plan to overcome those barriers, and put that plan to action. Hesed house is close to pubic transportation and close to downtown Aurora making it an ideal location for a homeless shelter.
As I walk down the streets of my city on a warm summer morning, I see a variety of people. Every step I take I see a different person and with each person comes a different story. During my walk, I see a group of kids younger than me smoking on the corner. I couple minutes later I see a mother and her child sitting on a bench in the park. Both the mother and child have bruises on them. Finally, just before reaching my destination, I see a homeless man sitting on the sidewalk and he is asking others for money so that he can buy some food. I walk into my house and sit down on my sofa and as I am sitting there, all I can think of were the different people I saw on my walk. What are their stories? Why are those kids smoking? Why are that woman and child covered in bruises? What happened in that poor man's life? How did he hit rock bottom?
When we were first introduced to this assignment, I was both excited and nervous. I was excited because it gave me the opportunity to step of my comfort zone. I was also excited to be able to get out into the community and practice some of the social work skills that we have learned in class. I was nervous because I knew it would be hard to hear the struggles of a single-parent experiencing homelessness. As someone who was raised by a single-parent, I also know how easy it can be to fall into homelessness. Overall, I think I was more excited about doing this assignment because I truly did want to hear the stories that single-parents experiencing homelessness wanted to tell.
Homeless people and their homes should be authorized to stay. Despite the fact that there homeless, there still part of the community. Fairly than turing on these people when they need our help, we must help them. The city must assemble some money or cash reserve and set them apart as a result of helping homeless. Before the homeless people were stuck with adversity, they may have devoted a lot to the city.
