Homelessness has been a problem in Hawaii, and especially Oahu, for more than two decades. The homeless have overrun the islands but it is no surprise as the circum- stances allow for it. Multiple factors contribute to the ongoing dilemma including the high cost of living, Hawaii being an island state, and the expensive housing. The prob- lems that cause homelessness are not going to go away by themselves. Although the problem is not increasing, the numbers show that it isn’t decreasing and shouldn’t be unless the state and community acts.

Everywhere you turn in the United States people are sitting on the corners of streets asking for assistance or digging in trash cans for meals. The epidemic of homelessness in the United States has reached an all-time high since the 1990’s. Unfortunately, the adage of people chose to be homeless was not accounting for families that live paycheck to paycheck and lose their job and therefore their housing because it is unavoidable. Alternatively, many individuals that are homeless have some type of mental illness or substance abuse problem thus creating a barrier to maintaining housing. Many of these individuals are incapable to preserve stable employment and have limited support to get off the streets. However, there are several programs that the federal government fund to assist with combating the problem of homelessness in America.

Homelessness describes the condition of people without a regular dwelling. People who are homeless are unable or unwilling to acquire and maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence.

When the issue of homelessness is brought forth in a conversation, many individuals think of drug addicts who are dirty and begging for change on a sidewalk to buy more drugs for their next fix. Many people do not know what poverty and homelessness actually mean, or what it feels like. Personal beliefs mislead humanity into believing something that possibly is erroneous. People who become homeless are likely to turn to drugs or alcohol to deal with their situations or to find comfort. Additions cause people who are having a rough time to become homeless. Often result in people losing their jobs, making it more difficult for them to pay their bills, thus resulting in homelessness. It is impossible sometimes for a homeless person to break their addictions, because even if they do break it, it is going to be difficult living on the streets trying to stay sober. While living on the streets, you start to feel lonely and depressed. The addiction will make you feel some kind of confront but still have you feel empty inside. This is why people keep on drinking and taking drugs so after. They are trying to fill that void of emptiness inside of them or trying to handle the depression they might be going through. Homeless people who suffer from mental illness and are using drugs on the streets as medication to their illness, have a harder time recovering.
