Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, is located 14.97503° N, -86.26477° E. It is part of Central America and goes on for about 112,492 km squared. Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca, and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, a large inlet of the Caribbean Sea. Honduras’ capital is Tegucigalpa, which is also the largest city in the country. Honduras became its own country independent of Spain in the year of 1821 and has not been very good on the political and social side of things. The population of Honduras goes well over 8 million. Most of the area of Honduras is tropical and sunny, while its mountains are more of a temperate climate. Honduras has many rainforests and some “cloud forests” which are called that because they reach almost 3,000 feet over the sea level. Honduras has environmental issues including pollution of its natural sources of fresh water and deforestation causing an erosion of the soil and the land eventually stripping it of nutrients. Honduras is known for its rich natural resources, including minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, and sugar cane, as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market. As much as 50 percent are under the poverty line, and over 1.2 million are unemployed. In 2005, Honduras was able to claim debt relief and help its poor populace. 2011 brought a census in which the population showed that only 4.3 percent of Honduras is 65 years old or older. The number of citizens that were between the age of 15 and 65 was 58.9 percent and all the ones who were under the age of 15 years were 36.8 percent. The overall population of 2011 was 8,143,564 people. Crime plays a big part in Honduras. Honduras has the world's highest murder rate. There are 60 people murdered out of every 1,000 that are recorded. In conclusion, Honduras is a very good place to live culture wise, but not so much safety and economy
