If you’ve ever owned an animal, you know that being around them can be extremely therapeutic. After a stressful day at work or school, it is always nice to come home to your pet and feel comforted by them. Many dog owners even claim that their dogs can feel their pain. However, if you speak to anyone who has been spent their life around horses, they’ll tell you that the connection between horse and rider is unlike any other. Norwegian researcher Anita Maurstad explains in a recent article, that over time horse and rider can become so attuned to each other that they develop a state of co-being. Maurstad also found, through research, that horses appear to learn to relate to humans in ways that provide them with a good quality of life. A recent study from Washington State university has concluded that kids who work with horses have significantly lower stress levels. In addition to these, there have been numerous other studies that show that working with horses decreases blood pressure, reduced feelings of anger, tension, and anxiety. Riding horses also allows you to gain feelings of self esteem, empowerment, patience, and trust. There is a trail down the road in Delaware where I enjoy taking my dog for a walk. It is a beautiful, five-mile loop traversing cornfields, thick patches of forest, steep hills and flowing streams; a wonderful place to escape the hustle and bustle of the suburban lifestyle and spend some time amongst the peacefulness of nature. Imagine the worst way to torture an animal, that's how horses are being slaughtered everyday! I feel horse slaughter should be illegal because organizations are being created to help stop horse slaughter, many laws are already being made to stop it, and horse slaughter is completely inhumane.

If you’re a Ramapo College student, chances are you’ve driven past the horses across the street at least a few dozen times and not given them much thought. But, for Ramapo senior Danielle DeBenedetto, the Bergen County Horse Rescue is the subject of her hard work and dedication.

Is the slaughtering of horses the most humane method? Horses get treated in brutal and cruel ways on a regular basis, but slaughtering is a painful and disturbing action to imagine. They do not deserve this treatment and yet, they still allow it around the world. The slaughtering of horses remains a commonly used method that has devastated the people that revolve around horses.

Over the year’s people have been upset over the fact that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conducts round ups on the wild horses. Some people don’t like the use of the Helicopters, and believe each herd group should state with each other in the same holding pen. Then there are the Ranchers who believe after each round up the Mustangs and Burros shouldn’t be allowed back to the rangeland because they would end up grazing in their fields and leave nothing for their own animals. All these are good points and true statement, but, these round ups are for the protection of the herds themselves, the other wildlife and the rangelands.

I own one and take care of her every day, but I also understand what goes on behind the scenes. I know that not every horse can have a loving owner. I believe that if a horse is offered a humane death; it is better than living its life unloved. My horse was an abuse case. She was born as a colorless paint which means that she was supposed to be born with two or more colors but she was born with only one color. Her breeder was upset and did not take care of her. She was finally rescued four years later due to being severely malnourished and beaten. I found her six years later and she was still malnourished. Now, she suffers with everyday joint issues and pain because of what she went through. I almost wish they would have sent her off to slaughter for she would not have had to suffer. Horse slaughter NEEDS to happen. There are too many horses on the earth, and not enough resources to feed them. They are considered livestock, so I do not see any reason for them not to be

When many people approach a horse, they instantly feel cautious of their surroundings. These people tense up and become terrified because of the horse’s size, how they look, or just because they have heard of people being injured from horses. Many people are intimidated by how big some horses can be and they do not want to be around them. Horses are only thought to be a dangerous animal, but they have helped humans in many ways. Horses are incredible creatures that have shaped history around the globe. There are over 150 different breeds of horses that have countless skills. Between their extraordinary intelligence and obedience, horses have worked at the mercy of humans for many different reasons. Their expertise ranges from being one of the fastest modes of transportation on land, to helping fight in wars, herd cattle and even serve as a source of recreation or sport (Duren).
