Arkansas Antiques Newspaper 1. Horsefeathers! Can you name this breed of horse that is known for its feathers? In this case, the feathers are truly known as “feathering,” and they are the long hairs that flow around the lower legs of certain breeds of draft horses. And while this type of horse features white feathers, it is also known for its height and size. First developed in Scotland, the breed takes its name directly from a Scottish county. However, we often associate this breed with the city of St. Louis, Missouri. In the early 1930s, a famous brewery began to feature the breed in events aimed at celebrating the repeal of Prohibition. Today, the breed is often viewed as this company’s mascot. What is it?

We often think of this edible herb as being one of the main ingredients of Italian cooking. However, this herb in question is an essential component of Greek, Spanish, Mexican, and Mediterranean cooking. Furthermore, this herb belongs to the mint family! Truly, we do not think of this plant as being “minty” at all. However, those of us who grow it in our gardens can see how this prolific perennial is similar to mint –– it grows very well here in Arkansas and can “take over” an herb …show more content…
What do you get when you mix tin together with other metals such as copper, antimony, or lead? You get this highly malleable, metal alloy. This material was in use as far back as ancient Egypt, and it has found itself recast (and recast, and recast) throughout history. In fact, that is one of the main features of this versatile metal, it is not too terribly difficult to melt down and reform into a new object. The metal itself was often called “poor man’s silver,” and it was used to craft tableware and dinnerware including: Tankards, porringers, chargers, flagons, and Ecclesiastical wares. Today, this metal is still used to craft candlesticks, sconces, hardware, small statuettes, and other decorative knick-knacks. What is it?
9. Some toys stand the test of time while others truly become icons. This “funny faced” fellow was first developed in 1949 and hit the national spotlight in 1952. Over the decades, he has definitely become an icon among toy aficionados. The original 1952 toy set included plastic pieces that were affixed to a common household object; the toy’s “body” was not included until 1964. He was the first toy advertised on television, and a direct increase in sales correlated with the new venture. Originally costing only 98¢, the toy became a huge success for the Hassenfeld Brothers (Hasbro.) In 1953, he got married and had children, and in 1987 he quit smoking. What is the name of this ultra-famous
The Reynolds 853 is a steel alloy created by Reynolds Cycle Technology, a manufacturing company based in Birmingham, England. It is composed of several elements solely including iron, carbon, chrome and molybdenum but also includes silicon, copper and manganese.
The American Quarter Horse is one of the oldest recognized breeds of horses. By the late 17th century, these horses were being raced successfully over quarter mile courses that is why they are called the American Quarter Horse. The Quarter Horse was a breed for performance and had considered thoroughbred blood as well as traits of other lines. In the early 19th century the Quarter Horses were overshadowed by thoroughbred which ran better over longer distances. But, Quarter Horses soon found a new acceptances in the western and southern United States as a stock horse.
Toys are artifacts created by humans that come in all shapes, sizes, and form used for entertainment, therapy, or simply to past time. One of the earliest toys was a doll made of stone that was estimated to be four thousand years old. What is really interesting is the fact that archaeologists have found that the majority of human civilization produced toys. Nowadays, toys are mass produced and have become an essential item in the human lifestyle. So much so that these toys have the ability to shape children or adults to act or be a certain way. Companies take advantage of their products and advertising to have customers continually buy their products so that these paying customers can achieve their desires. However, some products actually
Similarly, the LEGO company first became established in 1932, eventually creating the iconic plastic blocks recognized today by nearly everyone, in 1949, creating a phenomenon that would sweep the nation for decades and generations to come.
As for metal, it has many uses. In fact, modern civilization has thrived off of things where iron is used like: buildings, car frames, bridges, and much more.
After reading the story it is easy to see that forecasting demand is difficult in the toy industry. Particularly with toys that depend on trends and have limited marketability. The expert commentator M. Eric Johnson mentions, “Santa needs to stop reacting to fads and start creating them.” (McNulty, 2014) Just because the singer said Meowrrr was ‘so yesterday’ does not take into account the kids who don’t follow fads, nor does it take into account regional saturation of this singer’s popularity. Market analysis may show that the product may be more popular and sustainable in another region.
Today, I can walk into almost any toy store in America and expect to get bombarded by plastic figures with extreme bodies. But if I were to play this same scenario out in previous time periods, I would find it difficult to encounter the same types of products. This is because children’s toy trends have shifted in America throughout the 20th century. I recently came across an article from TIME magazine that reflects this idea. In it, author Allie Townsend, managing editor of Facebook, ranks 100 of the most influential American toys since the 1920’s.25 I moved through the list from the beginning, and rarely did I come across a toy resembling a doll or action figure until decades later. The toys that populated the store shelves during the first

Gaited horses, like the Tennessee walking horse, for example, are a special type of horse. Tennessee walking horses naturally have a higher step. That high gait decreases bouncing and makes a smooth ride for the rider. In walking horse shows, the horse with a highest gate wins the competition. This gate is known as the “Big Lick.” To produce an even higher gait, many trainers have used chains or special horse shoes that cause more pressure on the hooves of a horse. This practice is known as soring, when people cause pain to the lower legs and hooves of a horse to speed up the training for a high (Gang). Thoroughbreds are used for one of the most famous equine sports ever; horse racing. However, these fast horses have a secret that make them go even faster. Performance-enhancing drugs are used by veterinarians, trainers, and owners. This increases the horses speed, but the drugs are used way too often, and therefore damage the horses bones (Cohen). Whips are also a tool of encouragement in the racing industry. That is also hard to separate into black and white. One horse may shy away in fear from the whip, while
Trail riding can be fun and relaxing, but it can also leave horses exposed to disease, especially if they are traveling to a new area or haven’t been given the proper vaccinations to help protect them from local disease threats.
Later in the 1920’s they started to make the toys with more technology the price if the toys went up. They say people never seen a toy like this before and they thought it would be the last one made like that. The toy wasn’t really a toy it was a radio. From that day on the toy’s started to get better and everyone didn’t know what would come after that. The first toys ever made was made out of wood and metal and terra cotta those were only in the united state.
The American Quarter Horse is America’s most popular breed of horse and also the second most popular in the world. The American Quarter horse was introduced the the late 1600’s and have spread to every continent in the world. The American Quarter Horse is the result of breeding horses that were brought to England over to the United States and were bred with the horses of the indians. Since the late 1600’s over 3.8 billion American Quarter Horses owned globally with about 74,000 registrations a year.
Analysis of a poem- Horses by Edwin Muir It is said that one should forget the past and live in the present It is said that one should forget the past and live in the present. However, Edwin Muir’s ‘Horses’ is a poem of past memories only. The interesting part is that it deals with many conflicts and issues which are prevalent even today.
ToyWorld, Inc. was founded in 1973 by David Dunton. Before that, he had been employed as production manager by a large manufacturer of plastic toys. Mr. Dunton and his former assistant, Jack McClintock, established Toy World, Inc. with their savings in 1973. Originally a partnership, the firm was incorporated in1974, with Mr. Dunton taking 75% of the capital stock and Mr. McClintock taking 25%. The latter served as production manager, and Mr. Dunton, as president, was responsible for overall direction of the company’s affairs. After a series of illnesses, Mr. Dunton’s health deteriorated, and he was forced
