Cardale Jones, former Ohio State University football quarterback tweets; “Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain’t come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS” . This tweet continues the stereotype that athletes are stupid and do not care about getting good grades. On average athletes have a higher grade point average than non athletes. In a recent study, it presents that college athletes had a high grade point average, averaging a 3.25, than college students, averaging a 3.01. Not all athletes fall under the dumb jock stereotype.
Crime is, and most likely forever will be, a serious problem in America. Fighting crime is not a simple process. It is often deemed ineffective, as it seems that attention is often on petty crime, rather than the legitimate issues this country faces. Anne Milgram voices her opinion on how to effectively handle crime in her TED talk “Why Smart Statistics are the Key to Fighting Crime” very effectively. Utilizing her credibility through personal experience, Milgram uses ethos more than any other appeal during her speech. The logos appeal is also a key tool for her as she provides numerical results, and she occasionally appeals with pathos to grasp the audience’s emotions. Speaking to a broad
“The basketball coach stormed into the university president office and demanded a raise right then and there. Please protested the college president, you already make more than the entire history department. Yeah, maybe so, but you don’t know what I have to put up with, the coach blustered look. He went out into the hall and grabbed a jock who was jogging down the hallway. Run over to my office and see if im there, he ordered.
Lastly, one of the most common or everyday recurring stereotypes around the world is a woman’s delicateness and feebleness. The generic vulnerability of women has become a seemingly meaningless attribute to our society, spurring jokes and objects of ridicule. Being seen as feminine is still an issue in our society. To many it is belittling and insulting to be called feminine, which enforces the stereotype even more if you already are a female (Greenwood, Ambivalent Sexism and the Dumb Blonde). One of the most common sexist jokes involves the stereotype of the “dumb blonde”. Characteristics of this joke include the stigma of a blonde’s stupidity and inability to comprehend simple subjects. This stereotype of the dumb blonde is more detrimental
“Jock” is a term people use in a negative way. People think it’s a person who is athletic that is a bully and really stupid. That is a stereotype! A stereotype could be from your physical traits to how you act and they are based on your ethnicity, sex, etc... Now back to my point about the term “jock” , people have been using it for so long to degrade athletes that they forgot the real meaning of a jock. It is an enthusiast or participant in a specified activity. So how does someone that likes a particular activity become a person that is dumb and bullies?
“Hot in Here” expresses many stereotypes about women and men. First, the song works on the idea that women are sexual objects and must give men pleasure. Women are perceived as easy and servicing. They are dictated by a mainly patriarchal setting in the dance club. Their job is to serve men’s sexual desires and be dependent on them; hence, they should “give that man what he is asking for”. The song emphasizes gender role expectations that women should embrace their femininity and be attracted to only cis heterosexual males. There is no mention of other genders or sexualities within this song. Likewise, this song also demonstrates how men must embrace their masculinity. The men in this song are depicted as breadwinners, flaunting a “Gucci collar for dollar”. They are shown to take charge and action towards cis heterosexual women. Those who do not take initiative are deemed as
“28 days until my escape,” I think as I look in the mirror of my cramped, European style bathroom. A short blond haired, blue eyed girl stares back at me, reminding me how much I want to grow another couple inches. “Maybe then I’ll look like an 17 year old”. Back in my room I look the plans I have spent so long working on, and throw them under a loose floorboard. I’m in the kitchen rushing to grab breakfast when my mom walks in.
The campaign was deemed successful and went on to collect . The Livestream went on to garner 300,000 viewers while generating 180,000 unique visits on ots website. New categories—Social Media Fan Favorite—gathered attention from fans and resulted in 18,000 votes cast 2-weeks prior to the event (Anvil). Despite this, the scope of unprofessionalism displayed by the chosen “social media experts” drew wide-spread criticism from audiences and critics alike. Washington-Post writer, Emily Yahr, went on to dub it a “trainwreck” and to point out the fact that the presenters knew absolutely nothing about the nominees and their respective soap operas
Notwithstanding, there were many positive highlights that demonstrate a change, especially from recent years. With Joi McMillon becoming the first African-American woman film editor to receive a nomination in Best Film Editing in “Moonlight. Or Ava DuVernay becoming the first African-American woman director to earn a nomination in Best Documentary – Feature, for her work in “13th,” a redemption after being snubbed back in 2014 for her work as director in
The growing connection between politics and Hollywood has happened for a number of reasons, in a somewhat cyclical fashion. Politicians need Hollywood stars to support their campaigns because celebrities are useful in fundraising attempts and recognition. They have the advantages of fame, wealth, and can easily command press attention. In return, celebrities endorse candidates whose policies are beneficial to their industry. For example, while Clinton was in office he argued for “industry self-regulation and a television rating system, as opposed to formal government regulation” (Ormand and West 38). For this and other reasons, Hollywood stars donated large sums of money to Democratic candidates in return. In 2000, Hollywood contributed $20 million to Democrats as opposed to the $13 million that was contributed to the less Hollywood-friendly Republican party (Ormand and West 40).
Notable achievements from the night included: “San Junipero”, an episode of the new hit Netflix original series Black Mirror, of which features two women in love, was awarded two Emmys in one night. Donald Glover, African-American comedian and songwriter, received two awards, one for Comedy Acting and Directing, and Riz Ahmed for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his performance in Big Little Lies.
The lack of diversity in mainstream films and television shows have not changed much since the movie industry has begun. The ever-expanding entertainment industry seems to lack what Americans are searching for. My claim is that Hollywood does not reflect how diverse our society really is! There’s three reasons to support my claim, first, the film industry is dominated by a majority white figures. I have more evidence that suggest that Hollywood continuously reinforces negative stereotypes. Lastly, there is a lack of representation for African Americans entertainers and African American agents. Hollywood is also a city in California, annexed from Los Angeles also famously known as “The Creative City”. However, films we produce in Hollywood does not reflect how diverse our society has become since the beginning of the movie industry.
Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer aren’t only the best of friends. Apparently they’re the best of most categories in the 2016 MTV Movie Awards.
Throughout literary history there has been an abundance of female characters who seem to embody a single stereotype. Alfred Lord Tennyson’s The Lady of Shalott is an extremely influential literary ballad with a protagonist who exemplifies the idea of a ‘pure woman’. By analysing Tennyson’s work, we can come to recognise how Tennyson constructs this feminine image and how this portrayal has influenced and appeared in other literary works. This concept of a pure women represents a very one dimensional portrayal of women, in comparison works such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s Christabel contain female characters who express sexuality and are therefore portrayed as evil seductresses. By comparing and analysing these two extremities of female character we can recognise how prevalent this portrayal of the female body as a passive muse is
I conceal my face with layers of makeup hoping that half a bottle of BB cream will be enough to make me as flawless as Kylie Jenner look on the cover of Seventeen magazine. I use innumerous acne medications, aspiring to be as unblemished as the girls in the Clean and Clear commercials. I reject bags of M&Ms and fudge brownies thinking that my sacrifices will make me “love my body” as much as the emaciated Victoria Secret models love theirs (see appendix A). I routinely shave my legs and armpits and pluck my eyebrows with fear of becoming the hairy woman the media deems horrendous. I do everything, yet feel like I am nothing. Nothing compared to the beautiful women pictured on television, magazines, and
