how historically accurate is the new world 1.) How historically accurate was the movie you watched? How do you know? Did any inaccuracies affect your perception of history? The new world was accurate for the most part, but there were few inaccuracies that occurred during the movie. For one, it is not historically proven that the relationship between Pocahontas and John Smith was a romance relationship, as portrayed in the movie. In The New World, Smith leaves Jamestown because of orders from the king, when in reality it has been proven he left Jamestown in 1609 because of a wounded knee when his powder horn exploded. In the movie Pocahontas is shown being given over to the settlers, this is inaccurate because Pocahontas was kidnapped …show more content…
The English used their resources, and what they had around them, which they soon realized were rivers full of clams and fish. They explored further down the land to explore their territory, and learn of any vulnerable passages. Yet another thing that helped them is that the settlers kept receiving new supplies from England, and new men, and soon women, to help them farm and make up for the loss of men during the winter. The settlers planted a food source, corn, which was a stable food income for them which reduced their risks of starvation.they had learned from the Indians as well as received help from them, as on how to farm, and received gifts from them, that helped them through the settlement. The English had built a town more civilized and modern, then what the Indians had, making it easier for them to protect themselves from the enemy, as well as keeping the enemy out, and them out of harm’s way. Lastly, they build houses that acted as windbreakers which helped many survive the cold winter. 4.) What aspects of their past did characters in your film carry with them into the mysterious future? Aspects of the past that the characters of The New World carried with themselves into the future is their actions, and behavior toward each other, the way they treated one another, with love, care, and respect. Pocahontas carried her spirituality,
English settlers expected to receive food and help with tributes in valuable goods. The explorers were mostly military men who were prepared to explore, deal with the Indians, and seek out riches in the area. They were not prepared to grow food crops or fish. When times started getting rough they decided to raid the surrounding Powhatan villages for food.
Another inaccuracy portrayed in the film is the romance. Realistically there was not a romantic relationship between John Smith and Pocahontas because of her age. She considered him a father figure. Even though she saved his life and earned respect from the settlers there was no teary-eyed goodbye. Also in the movie her body is more covered
In reality it is roughly based on historical truths and not entirely factual. There is a clear difference and it is often lost in the cinematic glamour of a great story. “The New World” is no exception and has clearly created a loosely fact based adaptation of the story of John Smith and Pocahontas. In summary fact based period films by Hollywood can easily mislead people into believing anything when it is based on facts. Moreover, the reason the “The New World” took this approach was simply to make the movie more appealing to the
It lingers too much on either the romance or the feud between Magua and Col. Munroe. All great parts of the story, yes, however, if you were watching The Last of the Mohicans purely for historical purposes and to find out things about the war, you wouldn’t learn much. Yes, the movie (and the book as well I’m sure), does depict for the most part of what I could tell, everything accurately. It is the point of it not showing enough about this huge event in our history. How did the war get started? Who won the war? What all tribes and alliances aided both sides? There are a lot of left out details, unfortunately, which makes it hard to follow the details of the French and Indian war. For example, the fight between Magua and his Indians against Munroe and the English was quite a bit less violent than what is led to believe. Not to forget, we are not shown the reaction of Montcalm in finding out his Huron Indians disobeyed him in letting the English go safely. Also, the deepest inaccuracies I do believe come from what the book had written and what the movie chose to tell us. Those things aside though, it is a marvelous film. Yes, there are some inaccuracies in this film and probably even in the book, however, for a Hollywood production, I think they outdid themselves (did amazing). It can be a little hard to follow at times, but the film is overall
During the sixteenth century European pilgrims migrated across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in North America. North America had just been introduced to the Western Civilization. The America’s were home to the indigenous people, that were made up of several tribes that were called Indians by the early settlers. Together the Indians and settlers began to thrive. Growth and development in the new world was made possible by the abundant amount of natural resources.
The colonists set up a colony at Jamestown to defend themselves against the Indians, and eventually Powhatan’s people came forward to open the trade of corn with the colonists. This corn eventually kept the colonist alive until another ship of more people and supplies came in. This however, did not prepare the colonists for the winter of 1609-1610, or “the starving time”, when only 60 of the original
When the first European colonists arrived in 1620 on land in the New World, a disaster was forming. Arriving in what is known today as Massachusetts on The Mayflower, the settlers didn’t have enough experience surviving cold, harsh winters causing almost half of the settlers to die that had arrived on The Mayflower. This had changed in 1621 with the help of the Native people. The American Indians had started teaching the English people how to do many things including harvesting and growing crops. This help from the Native’s had led to the first Thanksgiving between the two groups. These two societies, however, didn’t remain friends. The English settlers had kicked off the American Indians of their own land and tried to make them convert to Christianity. The English settlers had also brought diseases from Europe causing many Indians to get very sick and even some die.
In reality, if it were not for the Native Americans, the Pilgrims would have been wiped out in a short period of time. The first relationship dealt with economics. In the Pilgrims first winter, many died from disease and starvation because they had no idea about how bad the winters are in New England. They didn’t understand how to grow crops successfully until the Native Americans helped them out, resulting in less death from starvation. Since the Pilgrims were in need of food fast in order to survive, they would have no choice but to steal corn from the group called the Nausets. “The snow made it difficult to find the corn, but eventually they located 10 catches of it.” They educated the Pilgrims about some of their practices such as how to build warm and protected shelters. But in a short period of time this ended up hurting the Native Americans. There was a native man by the name of Squanto who did not mind helping out the Pilgrims at all. Squanto showed the Pilgrims everything he knew about building crops, fishing, building shelters and basically how to survive. Squanto was a very talented eel fisherman and he provided eels to the Pilgrims so that they would have something to eat. “That night the Pilgrims at the eels with relish, praising them…” He also explained to the Pilgrims that if you plant fish in the soil next to your crops, the soil will get richer and the plants will grow better. Even though the Native Americans
[5] Gary Edgerton and Kathy Merlock Jackson, in their review of the movie, conveyed these same ideas about Pocahontas. They insist that “The filmmakers at Disney never really intended Pocahontas to be historically accurate, despite all the
The relationships between the two were somewhat composed, but many conflicts and tensions rose between the two regularly. When the colonists arrived, the Native Americans were able to help by teaching their lifestyles to the new travelers, training them to effectively grow crops and build canoes. Also, the textbook states that one of the primary reasons they were able to survive in the harsh conditions was because of Indian's guidance in creating a livable colony. The Indians were joining settlers with trading activities as well as being educated with religion and culture. But when conflicts arose, including the colonist's desire for land, tensions grew more and more. The Native Americans were now though as a "threat" to the colonists' hopes
To help with emerging oneself into the text, the author uses photographs and illustrations from living museums and authentic historical reenactments to show how colonial people lived in the 1600 and 1700s. The author does not just make mention of names of those who come over to settle into the New World but tells how and why the New World was settled. The author is very detailed in describing how things were for the settlers. The author even includes the hardships settlers and their families faced when they arrived in the New World such as the death of many settlers due to illness. There is so much information in the book and the author provides the reader with questions to begin each new topic in the book. This will help readers with critical thinking. The book has colored sidebars with even more interesting information and historical facts about colonial times and activities to try with the class.
The American colonists had very few, but significant advantages/strengths. The Americans obviously knew the land better so they knew where all the
Historic movies are often produced with the premise that they will tell an honest tale about the past, but how accurate are they really? The Patriot is a historical movie the shows the life of an ex-war hero, Benjamin Martin, and his life continuing on through the American Revolution. This includes his interaction with the soldiers and generals, his political stance, and his involvement through the towns. Because the Benjamin Martin is fictional The Patriot cannot be called 100% accurate, but that doesn't mean that other aspects shown were inaccurate. The Patriot demonstrates authentic knowledge of history militarily, socially, and politically.
I feel that the film was indeed historically accurate. First of all, the ship was really called Apollo 13, as it was in the movie as well. They also had all of the correct dates and times that the ship launched and landed. The film did a really good job of giving some of the correct details about what happened on the ship and what the four men were feeling while they were in space. It made you think about the situation that they were in and what must have been going on in their head at the time. I can’t imagine that anything about the historical events were incorrect. It was a movie though, so there were some parts that I’m sure never happened in real life, but were put in the film to make it more enjoyable for the viewers.
There are also some things that we learned in class that were brought up in the movie. Like one thing we learned in class and was in the movie was the name john smith. Also, we learned in class that the English just came to the new lands and just took land and that is also what happened in the movie as well. The final thing that we talked about in class that also was covered in the movie was the story of John Smith and Pocahontas.
