How Did Buck Survive In The Call Of The Wild

Adjusting to the survival way had Buck become stronger and more powerful in new ways.In Order to survive you have to defend for yourself and most importantly, you have to overcome your fears. “This first marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment” (London 24). This quote means that Buck had to adjust and learn the new ways of dog V.S. dog to survive he had to steal food to fight his hunger and gain strength

First, Buck has to fight off one hundred huskies. For example, Buck tries to escape the camp with Spitz. Since, he doesn’t want to be killed by the starving dogs. Second, Buck and the other dogs know Dave has been put down. For instance, the dogs know he has been killed and they are scared. Since, they are all sad, but they are glad it was not them being put down. Last, Buck and the team eat too much and might not be able to stand the cold weather. For example, the dogs could die in the cold. Since, the food makes them full and unable to get up and move around. In conclusion, Buck furthers his knowledge of kill or be killed.

As Charles Darwin once said. “It is not the strongest of species that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change”. Darwin’s quote strongly relates to “The Call of the Wild” in many circumstances where the stronger species was not able to thrive, but the one that was most able to adapt to change. In Jack London’s novel, “The Call of the Wild” it is conveyed that in order to survive in any environment one must be able to become accustomed to their surroundings. To survive by adaption one must drop old habits, be able to thrive in poor treatment environments, and love when given the chance. The main character in “The Call of the Wild” Buck, proves this idea on a multitude of occasions throughout his journey in the hostile Canadian Yukon Territory. The first adaptation that is made in “The Call of the Wild” is conveyed when one must drop their old habits to survive.

In the beginning of the book buck faces kill or be killed situations. First, Buck is trying to take Alpha Dog with spitz. For example, When Buck first goes to Alaska with Francois and encounters Dave and Spitz. Since, Buck fights Spitz to the death for alpha dog and wins that shows that Buck faces kill or be killed situations. Second, Buck has to learn how to pull a dog sled. For instance, When he gets to Alaska and see’s how good the dog sled team is and he’s going to have to step up his game to compete with the other dogs. Since, Buck has to stay on the same level as the other dogs or he’ll get kicked off the team and most likely get killed. Last, Buck Scenes have to change or he's going to get cut from the team. For example, when he first gets and see’s the team's skills and what they can do . Since, he see’s how good the team is and he knows he his whole outlook needs to change.(Conclusion)

Jack London brings a natural instinct into the spotlight by defining that everyone has that primal call to the wild, and often one feels this when in a difficult situation. Giving into this ‘call of the wild’ leads to a different kind of adaptation, it makes you become primal to survive in a primal situation. Further into the book it states, “The others sat down and howled. And now the call came to Buck in unmistakable accents. He, too, sad down and howled.” (London, 1990, p.62). This is the defining moment of Jack’s book when Buck lets go of all ties to humans and decides to carve his own path, adapting the way he needs to, not the way that humans encouraged him. Soon, Buck changes himself completely to fit snugly into the environment and to prevent further torturous struggles with humans. These quotes combine to paint a picture of total and complete change when it comes to a new and unfavorable environment.

In his novel, The Call of the Wild, Jack London wants us to see the step beyond the survival of the fittest to the complete adaptation to and domination of a once unfamiliar and unforgiving environment. Using a third-person, limited omniscient narrator, the cold, icy Yukon wilderness, and a journey from lazy farm life to the deadly work of a sled dog, we see Buck, a Saint Bernard/Scotch Shepherd mix slowly return to his ancestral roots. As Jacqueline Tavernier-Courbin states in her book The Call of the Wild: A Naturalistic Romance, “The book deals less with the concept of evolution than with that of devolution” (Courbin pg 57). London asks us to believe that happily domesticated farm dog, Buck, can not only survive life as a sled dog in the Yukon, but can become completely in tune with his primitive inner self, and ultimately thrive as a leader of a wolf pack.

One example which supports the thesis was when he stole food from the other dogs. In the story the owners did not give enough food to the dogs “He didn’t rob openly, but stole secretly and cunningly, out of respect for club and fang.”(23). The quote states Buck was learning to steal, in his happy days he just had to beg for food but now Buck was becoming more wild. This was the first time he was going to his predatory instincts of the ancient wolf and he was adapting to the problems he faces.

Everyone has to go through tough events in their life, but to be successful you have to have to persevere and overcome it. In Call Of The Wild Buck went through a lot of struggle, but he was able to persevere and become a great sled dog. However, my dad also went through a lot with his high school football team also, but they overcame all of it and won the state championship. Although they persevered in different ways they both were able to overcome a struggle and be successful. To persevere you must be able to overcome adversity, and Buck and my Dad both did that.

First, Buck has to adapt to being transported to the North and learn to be a sled dog. For example, when he lived with the judge he slept wherever and whenever he wanted, but now that he is in the North he can only sleep under the snow and for few hours. Since, Buck learns that to live and carry on through his journey he has to make some changes from his old lifestyle. Second, Buck finds food for himself in order to survive and pull the sled longer. For instance, Buck steals food off of the man‘s plate because he is starving. Since, Buck can put his instincts into action, adapt and can be a good sled dog and stay alive. Last, Buck gets little recognition and learns to use his instincts and care for himself. For example, Buck gains confidence in himself to

Buck is one of those individuals who carries and perseus this trait to push past, and no matter what achive and come out one top. Many times throughout The Call of the Wild, Buck perseveres to achieve his goal. He is able to do this because when he finds something he wants to achieve, he doesn't stop until that something is his. Such as in the novel when Buck defeated Spitz, and becomes the leader and controller of the team. Along with many other times in the book where Buck perseveres and never gives up. First, Buck must adapt to the other dogs’ ways. For instance, when he starts pulling the sled with his teammates he has to figure out what to watch out for. Like when Buck comes up on Sol-Leks’ blind side and Sol-leks swats at him fiercely. Second, Buck has to change how he thinks. For instance, Buck comes up with new strategies for fighting and survival.

Buck was adopted by John Thorton and he made a social adjustment when he learned that “To Buck’s suprise these dogs manifested no jealousy towards him. They seemed to share the kindness and largeness of John Thorton”(78). This is a big moment for Buck because he had really never been around kind dogs that were not trying to compete with or kill him. This changed the way he acted to them because he was no long competing with the other dogs and he knows that he should treat them kindly and not feel jealousy towards

In The Call of the Wild, one theme could be that only the strongest survive, Buck goes through significant changes in his life and has to learn very quickly how to adapt in order to survive. The connection between this theme and natural selection is that if you are not able to adapt or suited for a certain task, you will fail. If Buck had not adapted and learned how to a sled dog, he would have most likely of died. When it says "only the strongest survive" it means that if you are not prepared or are weak, you will die first. In natural selection, when disasters happen or things in the world change, only the strongest, smartest, and quickest to adapt will survive. Since Buck commands other dogs to disobey Spitz. Last, Buck finds love with John Thornton. For Example, Thornton shaking his head, Buck play Bites. Since Buck and Thornton are inseparable. Buck came to mastery of his will to survive he new how to fight he had that in him   There were fierce that brought buck to mastery so when he bristled and showed his teeth”. (london 49) This prove that buck was fit to live in the wild. He could hunt and kill when he need to. Also he was a leader he wanted to be a model for the other dogs but if he needed to he would kill them. Lastly, Buck learned through his time in the wild that he needed to be strong and the master.    At one point in the novel, Buck mastered Spitz, all the sled dogs to prove that he was the master of everything.  Each one of these tasks were not easy for Buck. “Mercy did not exist in the primordial life it was misunderstood for fear and such misunderstanding for fear and such made for death kill or killed eat or be eaten was the law” ( London 77).  Buck showed the theme struggle for mastery when he realized he needed to fight to survive and be the leader. He is able to change and accept the hard conditions in the Northland and overcome the obstacles because he is more smarter and has many much more imagination than any of the other
