Christopher Columbus is known to be one of the greatest explorers of all time. He sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean in search of a route to Asia but achieved recognition by making an arrival in the Americas instead. Many sailors today still will use Columbus routes from Asia to America.
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa Italy in 1451. He worked with his father for many of his early years but always had a passion for sailing. In 1491, Columbus wanted to develop another Atlantic route to Asia. In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella funded his first trip. On August 3rd, 1492 Christopher Columbus and his crew left the port of Palos looking for China, India, and Japan. Many of his crew was growing tired and begged him to turn around. Then on October 12th, 1492 they found land. Originally Columbus thought he was in the West Indies. Columbus sent three men inland to see if there were any men and women. The Indians called the land Guanhani, but Columbus named it San Salvador.

He later noticed that the Indians were smoking tobacco. On his third voyage, he made it to Hispaniola. There he met friendly Native Americans. The natives called the land Hati. Columbus later left the island but he left 39 men behind to make a small settlement. On the first voyage he wrote a letter to Luis De Santangel. He was a royal member who supported Columbus. On October 13, 1492 Columbus went on his voyage funded by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to the New World in order to establish trade and search for gold which as delayed when he arrived on the land of North America. Columbus discovered the Native Americans on the land and named them Indians. Christopher forced natives to learn so they could communicate better and help Columbus with his trade and thirst for gold. Columbus promised ten percent of his earnings to his funders if he ever discovered large quantities of riches.
