After the Civil War slaves got their freedom, blacks started their own churches and schools were able to purchase land, and by 1870 sent 22 representatives to congress that was a big difference for them going from slaves to having a vote and leading our government. Some of the Southerners were not happy with the decision for blacks to be free. White power started “Ku Klux Klan” they began burning down houses, schools, and churches that the African Americans lived in or went to, soon the south was run by white people again and the blacks were losing almost everything they had gained from the vote. Jim Crow Laws started as a derogatory word for African Americans the southern state legislatures started to pass laws requiring the separation of
Even after the hurdle of being enslaved was passed, there were many more and difficult hurdles ahead. For example, the black codes were an earlier major hurdle. The codes prevented African Americans from owning weapons, votes, and land. While the Black Codes were quickly abolish; a group emerged called the Ku Klux Klan which aimed to bring down African Americans to be seen as less than then human. However, the Jim Crow laws caused separation, and that separation led to African Americans having unequal opportunities. These laws were claimed to be constitutional, because they didn't deprive any person of life, liberty, or property; or trying to include slavery. From the Black codes to Jim Crow laws, African Americans had, and have many hurdles to overcome.
Slavery was not a word that was unknown in the United States of America; the word was at the tip of almost everyone’s tongue, only it came with many names. After the civil war, slavery became more pronounced for the black people. The south then thought something ought to be done and passed laws called the black codes which begun the limitation of blacks’ rights and separated them from the whites; white supremacy began. Before, these laws would have been unnecessary because most of the black people were slaves and they were already segregated in public places like schools and theatres. In 1866, Congress did not like this and they responded to these laws by putting a stop to it. Republicans had managed to begin reconstruction on the society and understand the black community. But in 1877 things took a turn for the worse when the Democratic parties recovered control and stopped the progress of reconstruction. This in turn caused the reverse of all the progress made in the past few years to understand the black community; they lost their rights to hold political seats, vote and generally participate as though they were members of the community. Slowly but surely, the south started to restore their racially unfair laws. The aim of the laws? To ensure segregation and alienation of the black community. One of the main powers taken away was the right to vote and they did this by imposing poll taxes, having expensive fees to be paid at the voting booths and
Jim Crow Laws was caused due to many unhappy white southerners who weren’t happy about the ending of slavery. In addition, many white people also didn’t agree/like the fact that they would have to work with African Americans. Later on, there were “Black Codes,” which was a law in the southern states declaring that many African Americans wouldn’t have as much freedom. Also, “black codes” would make them not get paid the same amount as white southerners, and they would get paid lower wages and debts as well. For instance, the black codes also restricted civil and political rights for African Americans: a limit of freedom of employment, freedom of movement, the right to own land, and their freedom to testify in court.
The schools for all races and road repairs cost money that the U.S. currently didn’t have. This caused taxes which made Republicans very unpopular because Americans hate taxes. White southerner democrats despised the fact that blacks had rights and eventually caused violence in protest. For example, the KKK, urban riots, and nightriders. In response to the violence, Congress passed the Enforcement Acts which made it criminal to take away rights of blacks. An example of an Act was the Amnesty Act in 1872. This act removed voting restrictions against many of the secessionists who joined the rebel cause. Since all of this violence was happening, less black men voted which caused the whites to completely take over. Due to the economic depression in 1873, northerners lost interest in

The 14th amendment guaranteed citizenship to blacks and demolished the Naturalized Act of 1790 which limited it to only whites. The 15th amendment allowed African American men the right to vote which lead to many of them to seek office positions and utilizing public education. (History.com, n.p) Even with these amendments and acts passed giving African Americans more rights and more freedom, whites in the country still discriminated against them. During reconstruction in the 1870’s, white’s that opposed black rights came into power and formed groups like the Red Shirts. The Redshirts were a white terrorist groups that were active in the southern states during the end of the Reconstruction period. (ncpedia.org, Hunt) They were influential enough to encourage smaller groups to form in other states and eventually lead to the Ku Klux Klan to form. Other tortuous acts happened in the southern states when the white supremacists gained political power like lynching, which is what the four suspects in the Lucy Jane Pollard murder case faced if they were not properly protected. The most lynching in the United States happened during the years of 1882 to 1920, right through the time of the murder. The white supremacists that took power in the south also imposed Jim Crow laws which were laws enforcing racial segregation. These laws,

The Jim Crow laws separated black and white people like schools, water fountains, busses, and ect. This all started in the 1870"s. Since slavery was in the south it was more common there. These laws made riots start like the Atlanta race riots in 1906. During this riot dozens of black people were killed whites. The riot that happened in Tulsa 1921, there were white mobs that killed a group of 300 black Americans. Some people that helped get rid of this problem were Rosa Parks and MLK JR. Some people had a protest on Rosa because she got on a bus and was told to get off the bus because she was sitting in a white males seat. Then for MLK, he wrote a speech and read It out load to a huge
First, it started with making African Americans criminals to keep them locked in working for old slave owners. Second, it turned into Jim Crow laws that were to keep African Americans down by separate but equal that was not really
By passing the Compromise of 1877 and removing federal troops from the south, white southerners reasserted their power over the freed blacks. Most blacks were forced to become sharecroppers. Where they farmed land that they didn't own and when harvest season came had to give most of their profit to the land owner. The fees were so high that the black workers would never get out of debt. Now "free" workers were working under the same conditions and the same families they had been slaves for before the Civil War. In order to further segregate the states enacted the Jim Crow laws. Southern states also performed literacy tests, registration laws, and poll taxes to prevent the black population from voting. The Supreme Court gave their approval to the segregation in 1896 during Plessy v. Ferguson. The Supreme Court declared "separate but equal." If one did not follow the laws placed before them they would be punished by the law or worse, the would be lynched by white civilians. The worst year was 1892, when a total of 230 people were lynched. Reconstruction ended before reconstruction could be completed because of that black Americans would be tortured because of their race for years to
Most people remember or have been told stories about the civil rights movement. Though it was a remarkable time in our history, the story of segregation started long before the marches in the streets. After the Civil War, Southerners were not happy about their slaves finally being freed. In order to keep the African-American community under their control, white Southerners passed numerous laws that oppressed blacks and kept them confined in society. They were known as the Jim Crow Laws.
The first blacks came over to the USA in 1619.There were 20 slaves ,then more spread throughout the southern states. Later on, the blacks helped in the Revolutionary War. By the 1860 ,there was 4 million blacks. In the South at this time, blacks were one third of the population. (“Slavery in America.”). Before World War II everything was segregated, even units in the military. Brown vs Board of Education went to the Supreme Court, the ruling made it so all schools had to let in black students to school. Because all of the state laws l went away, the tension at white schools was high with blacks. (Wikipedia contributors).
In 1865, slavery was abolished and the blacks were free from the whites. However, segregation was not outlawed. This meant that the blacks had to go in different doors, different water fountains, and things like that. There was also a violent group called the KKK that hated the blacks and murdered them sometimes. In 1964, the blacks were no longer segregated from the whites. This was called the Civil Rights Movement.
