Throughout the years, basketball has evolved into a thrilling sport enjoyed by millions worldwide. In 1891 Dr. James Naismith invented a physical activity that would eventually develop into the billion-dollar industry it is today. Basketball started out on the streets of cities like New York and Chicago. As the sport became more popular, entrepreneurs saw it as a business opportunity and created the National Basketball Association on July 6, 1946. In its early days, professional basketball was dominated by the center position with players like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. The center position usually was the focal point of the game since their shooting percentage was better then guards and forwards. These players would bully shorter opponents with sheer height and score with great efficiency and ease. Coaches frequently made players pass the ball to the center most of the game. Jordan dominated the NBA with a style of play never before seen on the hardwood court. Michael Jordan once said “You have to do things for yourself before they become a reality.” What he actually meant is that he was going to change the game in many ways. Jordan was a game changer because of his explosive moves to the basket, impressive handling of the ball, outstanding shooting, and a great post up game. All of which were never before seen in guard players. He demonstrated why skill was more important than height. The effect of Jordan’s game was so brilliant that the NBA changed its rules to make the games more exciting. This led to high scoring games featuring relentless attacks to the rim and spectacular dunks that Jordan popularized. The NBA even changed the length of shorts players wore. Jordan forever changed the game of basketball with his unmatched skills and on-court competitiveness that influenced the style of play seen in modern day NBA
