How Did Native Americans Develop Their Culture

The Natives of both North and South America lived culturally diverse lives. Tribes from the Great Plains, likely had significantly different lifestyles than the Aztecs, but there were certain key parts of Native American life that were found throughout most cultures. Almost all groups were to be found with a system for the acquisition of food and some form of religion. These practices changed and developed, especially with the arrival of the Europeans. Through thick and thin the Native Americans survived for thousands of years, their culture was ever changing, yet the core fundamentals of living remained static. Sustenance is a requirement that is universal to all living beings. Without food humans cannot survive. Native Americans were no exception to the rule. Like most peoples they developed methods of obtaining food; this becoming a key part of their culture. Different groups had different methods for gathering food. Most of the natives were polytheistic, believing in multiple gods or entities. Often smaller villages had less developed belief system, while some larger societies in the south, such as the Mayans or Aztecs, had vast temples and pyramids devoted to their gods. Some groups even practiced human sacrifice, “The Aztecs also sought favor of their gods by offering human sacrifice...” (6) The practice of human sacrifice may have only developed in larger societies that could afford it. Nonetheless most smaller villages and tribes in the north believed more predominantly in spirits and the holiness of life, “They [Native Americans] revered the physical world and endowed nature with spiritual properties.” (10) Although Native Americans had their differences, the belief in greater powers was predominant among
