After the Civil War ended in 1865, the Federal government wanted to help the now freedmen who are still living in former slave states. They decided to start the Reconstruction Era, which lasted from 1865-1877. The purpose of this Reconstruction time period was to rebuild the damage that has been left in the South from the Civil War. A group known as Radical Republicans worked to help all freedmen gain rights, but white supremacist groups interfered. Within that time period, “reactionary forces–including the Ku Klux Klan–would reverse the changes wrought by Radical Reconstruction in a violent backlash that restored white supremacy in the South” (http://www.history.com/topics/american-civil-war/reconstruction). The Southerners themselves continued to perpreturate violence causing the North to back away, leaving the South to end Reconstruction. Although both the North and the South were responsible for the ending of Reconstruction, the South had a bigger influence on the ending. After the Civil War, the North wanted to “reunite” with the South and become one nation again. Throughout the years, it became clear that this is not what the South wanted; they did not want to be controlled by the Northern states. The South always seemed to be having problems, whether it was from the Carpetbaggers, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) or the local southerners causing crime and violence. The North then sent down troops to try to control the South, but they were soon stopped by the KKK. The KKK
As we now know the Civil War consisted between the North and the South, In which both wanted something big that can only be promised by war. The South defenders were not only its people but also a really racists and ruthless group, going by the name “The KKK”. This group not only had the same intentions as the
When the Civil War ended, reconstruction occurred in the nation and the North and South would be trying to find ways to reconnect the sides in a civilized way. The Reconstruction Era was a time period after the Civil War where the states formerly part of the Confederacy joined back into the United States. But in the process of trying to fix the states, the North slowly started to oppose the idea of reconstruction. The North killed reconstruction by not caring about the problems in the South (document c) and their opinion on blacks in the government (document d).
The reconstruction era took place after the Civil War from the year of 1865 up to the year of 1877. The reconstruction of the South was not successful for many reasons. One reason being that during this era, the South were fighting for what they originally had wanted during the Civil War. The second reason why they were not successful is because of their time being spent arguing against the Freedmen’s Bureau instead of reconstructing the South right after the Civil War that had just ended after their loss determined the end of the of it. Lastly, the South were not able to put themselves back together because of the Republican Corruption that had angered the southern whites. Because of these reasons is that the Southern did not succeed from reconstructing themselves straight after losing to the Union during the Civil War.
The end of the Civil War in 1865 was a very conflicting time for the United States. On one hand, the sanguinary struggles of the war had finally come to a close. On the other hand, the desperate desire to rebuild the damage in the South quickly became very popular. This was called Reconstruction, an era focused on changing the ethos of resisting Southerners and installing equal civil rights for all citizens. Despite how important Reconstruction was for rebuilding the American economy, this desire ultimately came to an end in 1877. Although both the North and the South played roles in this nation defeat, Northern neglect primarily killed the
An attempt to transform the Southern United states between the sad years of 1863 to 1877 to finally unite a kingdom that failed to racism and inequality was the idea of reconstruction. First, the three different perceptions of the Civil war came alive during reconstruction. The reconciliationist vision, the white supremacist vision, and the emancipationist vision. Then president lincoln was inclined to fix it all and invite the south back into the union, while congress tried to make African Americans feel like more than ⅔ of a person make their rights feel like an advantage to life instead of them being commandments that they have to carry and strictly follow. Lastly reconstruction led to the end of republican rule at different times in different places.
The South killed Reconstruction if the KKK did not exist there might still be reconstruction today. Reconstruction is important because it shows people that there is always going to be people who do what they want, and if others don’t listen to that certain group, then they will be killed. It matters today because if there was no Reconstruction, people today would not have learned there lesson on bullying. Now, people don’t let any large groups of people boss them around. Reconstruction has helped out America a lot, without it today, the U.S. would not be the same as it is
Northern Neglect and Southern Resistance both played major roles that influenced the termination of Reconstruction, in which Freedmen were being noticed as equal in our society. Towards the end of the Civil War, slaves began to have hope in America because the tables were beginning to turn. It was the 100th anniversary of The Declaration of Independence, and former slave states started allowing black Americans in their home (Background Essay). Three Amendments were formed to officially end slavery, provide rights and protection, and made it illegal to deny someone to vote based on their race (Background Essay). It was paradise. Although, new groups such as the KKK (Klu-Klux-Klan) were formed, and Northerns didn’t seem to be themselves, changes were being made. Paradise was over. Our question is now, Who Killed Reconstruction? I believe the South killed reconstruction because of their violent and murderous actions toward the former slaves.
The south killed the idea of reconstruction with their violence. The Southern states are responsible for killing reconstruction because they were too violent and had no efforts in helping newly freed slaves. “He was foully murdered by the Ku-Klux-Klan in the Grand Jury room of the Court-House on Saturday.. He was stabbed 5 or 6 times and then hanged on a hook in the Grand Jury room.”
The Reconstruction Era lasted up to 1877 from the time just after the Civil War. The Reconstruction failed to bring about social and economic equality to the former slaves due to the southern whites’ resentful and bitter outlook on the matter, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Jim Crow laws.
The Southern Rejection to Reconstruction The age of Reconstruction, the attempted rebuilding of the South in post-Civil War America, came to an abrupt end in 1786, only 11 years after the end of the war. This is due to many bipartisan factors - that is, both the north and the south held responsibility for end of the era. However, if it was not for the actions of many southerners - such as formations of pseudo-terrorist organizations, institutions of black codes, and the visceral need of the southerners to keep blacks enslaved, the age of Reconstruction may have come to such an abrupt stop. Many would claim that, while the Confederacy had fallen, the Confederate spirit was still alive - this is evidenced by the rise of the paramilitary terrorist organization, the Ku Klux Klan.
Reconstruction (1867-1877) under Congress was a fast tightening of a noose in the South. Congress no longer trusted Andrew Johnson’s loose plan for Reconstruction, so they began closing in on their plans. Radical Republicans made many lasting impacts in this period. Under Congress, the 14th and 15th Amendment was created, guaranteeing rights to African Americans. A newly created Freedmen’s Bureau help create many schools and colleges, lasting up to modern times. African Americans held power in office, although they were quickly brought down by the Ku Klux Klan’s terrorism. The main path Reconstruction took was based on the government’s plans. There
The United States changed dramatically during the reconstruction period. After the reconstruction period, the United Stated continued to adjust well as we see it change economically and politically. Though the adjustment continued to go well, the change that occurs after reconstruction is emphasized with industrialization and the impact that industrialization has in certain regions of the U.S and on the people. Along with the new economy came with complications that affected the improvement of conditions in work and in life.
At the conclusion of the Civil War, the South was distorted and impoverished from the three hard years of fighting and their main source of income, cotton crop, completely destroyed. Now in control of the rebel Confederate Southern region, the Federal government policies of Johnson and former Confederates were solely in charge in leading a united Union, together as one, through the new era of racial equality. Unfortunately, the Union did not become united as hoped. With the lack of Reconstruction policies enacted by the Federal government and lenient policies of the reinstated Confederates, control fell into the hands of one group, the Ku Klux Klan; which became the sole power of the South for decades. The racial, white supremacist group, the
The restoration process began with small plans that were put forward by President Lincoln as well as President Johnson. The two president’s main aim was to combine the confederacy with the unions (Flanagan). This fact was called the presidential reconstruction. The Republicans were put into office to ensure that the freed people’s rights were protected as well as to make sure that America was united. The civil rights act was passed and the southern state began to follow the rule. The Congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act that would ensure that the federal authorities could be able to protect the freed citizens. However, even with the introduction of such laws the African Americans were
The Reconstruction era was put into effect by Congress in 1866 and lasted until 1877. Reconstruction was aimed at reorganizing the Southern states after the Civil War. The reconstruction plan granted the means for readmitting the southern states into the Union, and tried to come up with the methods by which whites and blacks could live together in a non-slave society. America's position as a country was established on principles of freedom but those beliefs were weakened by slavery. At the end of the Civil War, many blacks felt that they were entitled to start collecting the benefits that had been denied for so many years. Being able to vote, own land and have a voice in political affairs were all goals that they believed were reachable.
