How Did The Enlightenment Influence The American Revolution

The Enlightenment influenced the American Revolution with many ideas and concepts. Enlightenment philosophers believed in different structures of living such as natural rights, freedom from oppression, and innovative ways. Modern day America is ifluenced by liberty, equality and justice. Ideas from the Enlightment can be found in important documents from the revolution and passed it. The American Revolution and numerous events follow the ideas of the Enlightenment. The Revolution soon started after a series of unfair taxes upon the the colonist. The colonist would pay taxes to support the British government. The Stamp Act was one of many other taxes the colonists thought was unfair and stood against opression. The Americans wanted their own government. Soon after, the American Revolution began. These rights were based upon the Enlightenment, from the philospher John Locke, who believed, every human has certain rights given to them by the law or society, and if the government fails to protect the people's natural rights, Locke argued that it is necessary for the people to revolt. Since the British did not give them natural rights and they violated their portion of the contract, the colonist began to revolt. In the …show more content…

In the beginning the people were ruled as a monarch by the British. The colonists experinced the British king, and did not like it. When they revolted, it was not all that easy to start their own government. But when they did, they wanted liberty and rights, so they created a constituion. The constitution developed for Americans to have independent lives. Philosophes, like Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau were more about the idea of democracy, unlike Hobbes who thought people were incapable of ruling themselves. The philosophes with the ideas of democracy encouraged the questioning of absolute monarchs. The influences of democracy by the several phiosophers helped shaped America
