Thomas Edison influenced a lot of our modern machinery, with inventions such as the tin foil phonograph and the lightbulb, effecting the lives of many around him, as well as introducing wonderful and helpful new technology. Thomas Edison lived from 1847 until 1931, during the Industrial Revolution, and became a very successful inventor. He also received many great awards and prizes for his inventions.
One of Thomas Edison’s first successful inventions was the Universal Stock Printer. The Gold and Stock Telegraph Company paid Edison $40,000 for the rights to this invention. He then went on to create the Quadruplex Telegraph, which allowed for two signals to be sent in two different directions on the same wire. Jay Gould bought this fantastic

The first motion picture he recorded with this was a short film of his employee, Fred Ott, pretending to sneeze. He then built a motion picture studio in New Jersey. Edison’s next invention is the one he is best known for: the light bulb. Edison’s light bulb was low energy, with a carbonized filament. After experimenting with filament after filament, Edison was about to give up. Then, his partner saw a piece of sewing thread, and Edison tried it. Finally, he had found the right filament that produced a reliable and strong source of light. The first light bulb burned for 13 ½ hours straight! Edison used Direct Current, or DC, while his competitor, and former employee, Nikola Tesla, used Alternating Current, or AC. This was a huge point of argument between the 2 inventors. In an attempt to prove Tesla’s AC method dangerous, in 1903, Edison electrocuted a circus elephant named Topsy on Coney Island. There was a huge argument between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla over who should be known as the inventor of the light bulb. Edison was eventually declared the inventor. As part of his work in electricity, he created the parallel circuit, a durable light bulb, an improved dynamo, an underground conductor network, devices for
Tesla created the alternating current, among other things, which he invented to have a safer electrical current that the direct current (Activist Post, 2017). Another invention of his, perhaps the most notable, is the Tesla coil. The coil produced high voltage, high frequency waves of electricity that could be used in radios, X-ray generation, electrotherapy, and more (Dickerson, 2014). However, Edison created things that are infinitely more useful to society, such as the phonograph, a more practical light bulb, the electrical generator, the kinetographic camera, the motograph or loud-speaking telephone, the alkaline battery, and the phonograph (Aquino and Sterbenz, 2014). The phonograph has proven itself to be one of Edison’s most famous inventions. Edison changed how the world sees, hears, and uses electricity on a daily
In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the first incandescent light bulb in a competitive community. The invention of the electrical light bulb was built on commutative work done by previous scientists and researchers. Edison was invited to William Wallace workshop to examine the Wallace’s prototype. Edison thought that the prototype has something wrong, “I believe that I can beat you making the electrical light. I do not think that you are working in the right direction” Edison told Wallace [1]. Therefore, he decided to do make his own electrical light and there race was started. After a week of his visit to Wallace workshop, Edison was already invented the first light bulb. The success that was achieved by Edison led to a big success for his company,
The light bulb had already been invented before but Thomas Edison improved and perfected the light bulb. The new light bulb that Thomas invented lasted for longer periods of time .Thomas thereafter went on to invent an electrical power system, so that people would have electricity and could use the light bulbs at home.
The light bulb was an amazing invention when it was first created and it still is today except people overlooked a few things about the first light bulb - also known as the incandescent light bulb. The things that people overlooked on the incandescent light bulb was the fact that it guzzled up so much energy. Another problem with the incandescent light bulb was that it emitted carbon dioxide. One final problem with the incandescent light bulb
Electrification of the US brought on new ideas, and granted the ability to break boundaries previously thought to be impenetrable. Whether it was powering massive manufacturing machines, or turning on the light bulb to see in the early dawn of the morning, the lightbulb had a place for everyone in America . A large portion of success with electricity in the United States can given to a man named Thomas Edison. Building on the works of UK inventors, Edison patented the first real incandescent light bulb in the year 1879. (Kelly 2017)
The Light bulb changed the lives of many people; it had a big impact on illuminating the night. The night was always dark until the light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison in 1879 and ever since then, the night has been able to be bright if people wanted it too. The story of the light bulb begins long before Edison patented the first commercially successful bulb in 1879; in 1800 Italian inventor Alessandro Volta developed the first practical method of generating electricity, the voltaic pile, made of alternating discs of zinc and copper, the pile conducted electricity when a copper wire was connected at either ended. An English inventor by the name of Humphrey
He invented the motion picture camera , the phonograph (the forerunner of the record player) which a film camera which was among others. He was also one of the first inventors to make use of mass production techniques with his inventions, allowing him to create on a larger scale without him knowing. Although he was a great inventor, he was often criticized as being businessman-like and living off the inventions of his team, rather than his own ideas as he always worked with his team. Like all great inventions, the light bulb can’t be credited to one inventor it is all because of team work..
During the years of 1917-1918 he invented many ideas that put the US ahead of their rivals. One of his ideas was the use sound ranging to determine a manned gunners position. Edison also developed a method of detecting submarines on a moving vessel using sound waves. Edison used this method to help determine the discharge of a torpedo underwater from an enemy submarine. The amount of ideas and inventions Edison came up with was astonishing. He developed a way to help ships turn faster in open water. This helps the ships change course in the last minute to avoid oncoming danger and risk. He also had a huge influence in plans to save cargo and merchant ships from enemy submarines. These few inventions and ideas only marked the beginning of his contributions to the war effort. Edison went on to create underwater search lights and sailing lights for boats. Thomas Edison also helped in creating a new means of camouflaging ships. Another very important invention during this time was being able to track airplanes. This was a monumental invention by Edison. Another great development from him was high speed signaling with search lights. Which made for fast easy communication between boats and shorelines. Thomas Edison's greatest invention during this time was the invention of the Telescribe which combined the use of his phonograph and telephone. The Telescribe enabled the
Thomas Edison worked with many filaments to find the perfect one that gave off good light and was long-lasting. In 1879, he found that a carbon filament with an oxygen-free bulb glowed a lot and did not burn for about forty hours, he eventually created one that lasted over fifteen thousand hours. Between 1848 and 1975, Lewis Latimer, Willis Whitney, and William Coolidge upgraded the light bulb by improving the filaments. Due to this creation, electricity had to be paid by those who owned and used light bulbs on a daily
He was an American businessman and inventor born in 1847. One of his many inventions was the long lasting practical electric light bulb. The key things to his success was a durable incandescent material, elimination of air from the bulb a better vacuum, and a filament material of high resistance. This allowed the light bulb to stay bright, not catch on fire, and to last a long amount of time. The first one he created in 1879 he tested and it lasted 13.5 hours.
He also invented the electrographic vote recorder (Edison Muckers) that helped the legislators vote in a quicker, more efficient way. With his new invention of the electrical vote recorder, the votes were instantaneously recorded and then transferred to a board for everyone to view. He shorten the time from a few days to mere hours. He also created the motion picture camera where people were recorded in black and white which eventually led to color motion. This man should be known for his great contribution to
Inventions have made profound impacts on society. So many of Thomas Edison’s inventions are held in such high regard that he is considered the greatest inventor of all
Thomas Edison, the patentee of incredible inventions such as: the stencil-machine, the duplex telegraph, Edison’s electric pen and more than 100 more innovations to our society, has done the impossible yet again!
Edison’s first invention was the phonograph, which was inspired by his current career through the use of telegraphs. When Edison built his Research and Development
On average, two billion five hundred million light bulbs are sold each year. Thomas Edison was an American inventor, who happened to “invent,” the lightbulb. He is considered one of America’s greatest inventors. He is also considered “The Wizard of Menlo Park.” Even in the nineteenth century, he has contributed to the world today.
