How Do I Learn Write?

When it comes to reading and writing the two subjects go hand in hand. Every person is different and everyone has their own way of learning. How someone chooses to advance their skills in reading and writing all comes down to how that individual finds themselves learning best. I believe that in order to become a successful reader or writer you have to ultimately be strong in both. “How to Read like a Writer” by Mike Bunn, offers fair examples of various techniques on how to become more of an effective writer. “When you Read Like a Writer (RLW) you work to identify some of the choices the author made so that you can better understand how such choices might arise in your own writing”, (72). This statement caught my attention almost instantly.

The relationship between reading and writing is magnificent because they are one and the same. A great consistency of reading can permit someone to become a great writer. While reading a variety of books, he/she learns about text structures and language that he/she can transfer to their writing. I believe that reading gives me knowledge, which I can use to create narratives, argumentative essays and analyses. Throughout my whole life, I really struggled with writing. Every time the English teacher gave the class an assignment to write an essay, I was always felt terrified because I never saw any improvements in my writing whenever I got my essays back from the teacher. However, I wanted to change that this year. Writing 101 has been a very interesting class this year, especially since the theme of the class was “tai chi on paper”. In this class, I learned many techniques that helped me improve my writing like I learned how to take time and revise my writing a lot before I turned in my final draft to my professor.

Bettering your skills of writing is extremely important because writing can help you with several different aspects throughout your life. Being a good writer can help you solve problems, learn, and triumph in school and future jobs. So how do you improve your writing? Firstly start with your mental state. You have to be willing to learn and give yourself the proper amount of time and knowledge in order to do well. Writing is a skill that many authors use to show their style or qualities. Writing is such a great experience and it allows you to tell stories, or speak your opinions. It gives you opportunities to speak up and show your worth. There is two important steps for writing, one is to always think positive, and two is always believe in what you have to say. Many people struggle with writing at times and that's because they haven't thought out their ideas all the way or showed their full potential yet. It takes time to become a good writer.

I believe a good reader is what makes a good writer. But because I lost my interest in reading, I’ve struggled with writing throughout the years. It wasn’t that I had trouble learning new skills but because I was pushed away from what I wanted to learn, so I decided to pursue other interests. Despite being eager to learn, my writing suffered due to my lack of interest in reading, however my skills in writing have increased as my drive to read has rekindled.

Although I have not appreciated writing like I should, it has increased my knowledge on many subjects. From reading vivid stories to reading elaborative articles on difficult subjects, I've developed the skills necessary to understand at least the minimum that is required to continue through the subject. Because of this, I appreciate what I've learned from reading and writing countless short stories, elaborative essays, and reading books on subjects I am interested in.

Both parts of On Writing Well by William Zinsser, “Principles” and “Methods” give suggestions on the best ways of perfecting writing. For most, writing is no easy or enjoyable task and different people approach it in different ways. Zinsser for example, begins his book by describing how there is no one way to write, comparing his writing process to another successful author. Writing is something everyone has to learn in life. People brainstorm when they sit down to write. Letters, essays, and research papers are different forms of writing. Writing can entertain, inform, or persuade an audience. Everybody follows a different process when writing. In this course, I hope to improve my thinking and writing skills.

Growing up I was one of the many people who struggled learning how to read and write and was considered behind when compared to my fellow peers. Through this essay I will be covering what my personal experiences leaning how to read and write through elementary, middle, high school, college and also the effects it had on my self-confidence as a writer.

Every writer and reader has their own opinion and perspective on things. In “Exploring Language” chapter 2, all the authors had a great point and advice about how to be a successful writer. The one with the most useful information for improving my own writing was a professor at the University of California-Davis, Anne Lamott’s essay because I can totally relate to the subject. It has been always a struggle for me to write any of my college paper, but Lamott eased my fear of writing. She states “It is a matter of persistence and faith and hard work.

We learn to write at an early age. First, we learn to write words. Words become sentences, which forms paragraphs, then becomes essays. Overtime, we learn the rules of writing, and we practice them. Whether or not the expertise level of writing is met, we learn the basics and eventually become confident writers. Although I have been taught the art of writing, I have gathered from the feedback of my previous teachers and peers that my writing still needs improvement.

There are many different types and forms of writing that are out there to do. Some examples are persuavive and informative essays, comic strpis, book reviews, autobiograyphy, lettters, opioins, texting and many many more. Most people don't realize that they do some type of writing in some form almost everyday of their lives. Although I don’t seem like I do it that often; I believe that writing is a very critical skill to know and apply because it will help you significantly for the future of your life. Writing is the ability to form words and phrases into a well thought-out idea. However, many people find writing to be difficult and tedious at times. Even professional writers have reported episodes of “Writer’s Block”. Nonetheless, writing is a fundamental practice of an educated individual. In order to become a great writer one must examine their strengths, weakness, and strategies for perfecting the art of writing.

Reading comes as the second commandment, you write first and then you read, and the more you read what you write, the more you get better in writing.
