Lucius Annaeus Seneca once stated, “He who has great power should use it lightly”. The community of Salem in 1692 was recognized as a strict lifestyle which tolerates practices associated with the Catholic Church. Puritans tend to depend on strict rules in an orderly fashion as a guide to grow. Unfortunately the assumption made about Puritans is not true. The overall reality is that Puritans are ruthless, and are savage- like in order to gain power. The Crucible is largely surrounded with the abuse and misuse of power. In modern society people have more power than needed. Going against such individuals can bring about them demonstrating what they are genuinely shown to be, whether it be harming somebody straightforwardly or controlling others …show more content…
Abigail Williams is introduced as an innocent seventeen-year-old girl who was mistreated by the male figure. Since she has an affair with John Proctor, a thirty two year old married man, she becomes manipulative and power hungry. Her thought process and actions are driven by the jealousy she has over Elizabeth. The first occurrence of Abigail’s abuse of power is near the end of Act 1 regarding the activities being done in the woods. Abigail knows the dancing around the caldron is no longer a secret after her uncle Reverend Parris saw them “Now look you, child, your punishment will come in its time. But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now”(10). Soon after Abigail is questioned about the so-called dancing that occurred in the woods. When Reverend Hale arrives he starts questioning everybody and the answers make her look bad. She starts putting all the blame on Tituba by saying “I never called him! Tituba, Tituba . . .” Reverend Hale responds in shock” She called the Devil” (42). Abigail realizes if you confess to witchcraft and start-naming names you’ll be okay, if you deny it they will think you are trying to
The song “Rollercoaster” by the Bleachers is a good song that can be easily relatable with the character Abigail Williams from The Crucible. Abigail and the song share many characteristics that help them relate. Abigail gets a lot of people killed, she is exciting, and she is like a teenager who ran away.
Egocentrism, in simple terms, self-centeredness, can often make a person lose sight of what's really important as well as bring chaos to a situations. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, you can see how two characters, Abigail Williams and Reverend Parris, let their ego take control and allow their ego to standstill justice.
Abigail Williams is the main reason and cause of what has been going on and being done in Salem. She has done what any typical person would have done if they were caught up in a lie and in love with someone that claims to not love you at all. How would you react if you were in Abigail’s shoes? Would you tell the truth and confess or would you continue to lie again and again to stay out of trouble?
Abigail Williams is a little girl who is corrupted by the power and authority she is given due to the lack of knowledge of the people in her time period. The play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, shows how Abigail transforms from a normal person into a monster. Abigail may be a little girl, but she is far more powerful, corrupt and evil than she seems, because she receives high authority and is able to do whatever she wants.
In the crucible Abigail williams is one of the main characters and she did a lot to form the story. These are three most dominant traits that Abigail williams had in the book.
Conflict within a story does not only affect a single character yet rather affects them all. Abigail Williams, niece to Samuel Parris and cousin of Betty Parris, is most responsible for the conflicts within The Crucible. Abigail Williams consistently caused conflicts between many characters in the story as a revenge towards Elizabeth Procter following the conclusion of an affair with John Procter, Elizabeth’s husband. Initially, this conflict was kept between Abigail and John however soon after Abigail grew bitter towards John Procter’s wife, Elizabeth Procter as well as John himself. This bitterness resulted in a deadly accusation of alleged witchcraft as well as a cruel dispute within the small village of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. People will go to great lengths in order to protect the ones they cherish the most, even if it means destruction.
Abigail Williams in Act I along with many other girls, Tituba being the leader of the event, were caught out in the woods dancing around a cauldron with a frog in it. Reverend Parris testified in court that this is indeed what he saw in the woods. Tituba was charged with witchcraft with the intent to summon spirits. Later in this Act John comes to see what is wrong with betty, and he tries to comfort Abigail who says that she is just acting ill or possessed by evil spirits. While this conversation between the two continues, it becomes clear that they have had sexual relations in the past while abigail still worked at the Proctor residence, better stated an affair. Reverend Hale who is a famed which expert from a town over arrives and suddenly Abigail changes her story to suggest that Tituba did indeed try to call upon the devil. Tituba shocked by this accusation, vigorously denies it. Later in the Act Tituba ( now pretending to accept god again even though didn’t ever denied him) and Abigail begin accusing random women in the village of witchcraft. In Act II Elizabeth Proctor receives a poppet from Mary Warren. Later
Fearing the unknown is something that is commonly known throughout time. For example children were scared of the things that they were not able to see in the dark. Everyone was terrified that a great evil had made its way into the town of Salem. During the time period of the salem witch trials, there was an immense fear that the devil had found its way into the town. Soon a wide range epidemic of paranoia was spread throughout the town. Everyone was convicting each other of being involved in witchcraft, resulting in many deaths. A novel called, The Crucible, portrays what the town of salem was like during the period of the salem witch trials. A character named Abigail Williams shows manipulative ways, obsession, dishonest, and threatening.
In The Crucible, power is given to the powerless through accusation. In the town of Salem, which was a Puritan based community, women were very low on the hierarchy. A group of young, unmarried girls and one woman (Tituba), were suddenly given the ability to take away any member of the communities life in the sense that their accusation was taken at face value. Due to the discovery of them dancing in the woods by Reverend Parris, these girls (including Reverend Parris’ daughter Betty) were accused of witchcraft. Once they admitted to dancing for the Devil, they were thought to be connected with a holier/divine spirit than others because of their honesty.
Growing a deep attraction towards the spotlight the people gave them, the girls use their influence to manipulate people into obtaining their selfish desires, with hundreds of innocent lives being sacraficed during the process. Specifically, their leader Abigail Williams, developed a strategy to take revenge upon Elizabeth Proctor, the woman she used to babysit for. Out of Fear towards Abigail, the girls pretended that the people of Salem were under the devil’s control. No later did false accusations begin to spring out of the girls. An example being Mary Warren, stating “She sent her spirit out“ (pg. 1057). Ignorant of the fact that those words would soon have more impact then she intended. Only when John Proctor forces her to go with him
That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?” (Miller, 10) “Uncle we did dance; let you tell them I confessed it - and I’ll be whipped if I must be. But they’re speakin’ of witchcraft. Betty’s not witched.” (Miller, 10) “Abigail, I cannot go before the congregation when I know you have not opened with me.” (Miller, 10). You can watch her demeanor change within the first few pages even, she quickly becomes defensive and arrogant when the reverend Hale arrives. She becomes ready to do whatever it may take for self preservation as well as protecting her friends “ I never called him (the devil)! Tituba, Tituba…” she easily throws another woman under the bus. It is made obvious very early that Abigail will will do anything to survive and turn any blame away from herself, and she is ruthless in do it. She first pleads her innocence and
The Puritan community inaugurated in Salem in 17th century coexists with a strict, patriarchal hierarchy in which power is not fairly available to all. The church sits pompously on top whilst the others dwell on their laborious works, young girls especially being on the bottom of the social ladder. The young female population of Salem, most of them is involved with ‘witchcraft’ later, is subordinate in society as they are servants for Salem households. Moreover, Arthur Miller shows that in times of hysteria and uncertainty, whereas lies and deceits are deemed as truths, the social structure easily crumbles. The weak and vulnerable are then exposed to power and a way in the system that they have only ever dreamed of.
She is madly in love with John Proctor. One day when Abigail encourages some of the other girls and Tituba to go into the woods to play with witchcraft. But they end up getting caught in the woods. Abigail did not want to confess to the fact that they were messing around with witchcraft because that would look very bad on them in their society. Abigail becomes very vengeful and she sees her opportunity to get
Abigail Williams, in my opinion, is the most evil character in the story The Crucible. She uses manipulative methods to achieve what she desires. First she gets involved in an affair with John Proctor and then she gets involved in witchcraft. Not only this but she then proceeds to spread the blame to others. By doing so, she is putting people's lives in danger and she is starting a chain of accusations. Now we have lots of people accused of witchcraft, and some of them are going to die even though they are innocent of any wrongdoing.
I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her Barbados songs and tempting me with witchcraft. Abigail Williams told Reverend Paris that Tituba practice witchcraft and she threatens the girls to harm them if they don’t agree with her. Abigail Williams threatens the girls physically if they spoke of last night event. Let either of your breath a word or the edge of a word about the other things or I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. (Pg.920 Act 1) Abigail Williams is warning the girls to stick to her version of what happened that night. Abigail tells people Tituba made her do it. “She made me do it! She made Betty do it! She makes me drink blood! (Pg. 931 Act 1) Abigail Williams and the girls are trying to convince everyone that tituba made her do witchcraft. Abigail Williams is jealous of Elizabeth because Elizabeth is married to John Proctor and Abigail Williams wants him to herself. Abigail Williams accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft because she doesn't like her and want her dead. Abigail Williams cannot express her love for John Proctor if Elizabeth continues to be in the way. “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a _. (Pg. 917 Act 1) Abigail Williams cannot believe John Proctor is with someone like Elizabeth. Abigail Williams is trying to kill
