How Does Beowulf Show Self Sacrifice

The Epic Poem of Beowulf was written during the Anglo-Saxon period. It presented three main universal themes, in which it included loyalty and self-sacrifice as admirable traits. This theme is reflected in today’s society. An example, would be the film Fantastic Four. It shows loyalty and self-sacrifice by the four members, by how they sacrifice their normal lives to become stronger and faster in order to save those in need.
Beowulf shows self-sacrifice throughout the poem because he is putting himself out there to fight monsters who aren’t putting him or his town in danger. If it were anyone they would just stay where they were in the beginning without causing any alarm towards the beasts. In lines 1384-1396, ¨Let your sorrow..no longer.¨ shows that Beowulf is willing to help Herot without any doubt. After he had defeated Grendel, people in Herot saw him as a greater warrior. They considered him as a humble human being risking his life. At the end of the poem it shows that not anyone would be willing to be in his shoes. During his fight against the dragon, where he was struggling to defeat it because of its powerful fire, (referencing to hell), no one was willing to fight with him, they all left, except Wiglaf. Mr. Fantastic is considered as the leader of the Fantastic four and he feels the responsibility of making sure not only the citizens are in good care but his teammates as well. As to Beowulf, he doesn’t only want the Geats and his followers to be safe he wants everyone to be safe, that’s why he travels to Herot in the first place, so the people could live in peace. With the help of the team, The fantastic four were considered heroes, just as Beowulf did after he defeated Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and even the dragon. They could save the world multiple
