Celie was always use to being under a man’s rule and she never fought back. When Celie meets Shug, she starts to see the world in a different light. Shug opened Celie’s eyes to how her life could be if she would just stand up for herself. It took Celie a long time to fight for herself. But Shug made sure Mr. ____ would treat Celie right even if Shug wasn’t there.
Celie: Celie starts out as a scared young kid, who is abused and raped by her stepfather. She does whatever anyone tells her and barely ever speaks up for what is right. In the beginning she feels so alone and thinks it's better not to stand out for it will only hurt her. When Mr. ______ begins to act violent towards her, she still acts in a passive manner. Celie gets more and more afraid until she meets Shug. Shug is a female friend whom is much stronger than her. She learns more about a sexual relationship, and how to be her own person. Celie learns to fight back and reinvent herself. Celie changes her perspective on religion to. God may not be the person she always thought he was. The letters from Nettie also change Celie, in fact now she knows she has family. She gains self worth in the fact that her kids, and sister are fine. In the very end of the book Celie becomes a new person, working and sewing as a job. She doesn't rely on men nor does she feel worthless.
Mr.__ has committed the ultimate crime against Celie: He has intentionally kept Celie separated from the only person in the world she loves and who loves her, Nettie. This knowledge gives Celie the ability to rise up in anger against her husband and no longer be victimized by him. “Now I Know Nettie alive I begin to strut a little bit.” (P 154) Encouraged by the self-confidence she has gained through her relationship with Smug, Celie lashes out on Mr.______ and follows Shug to Tennessee. From Nettie’s letters, Celie learns that Pa is not her actual father after all, another bit of knowledge that gives her strength. Celie finally takes control of her own life and
Celie's transformation from Mr. ____'s slave into an independent women is successful thanks to two strong women that become role models for Celie in her everyday life; Shug Avery and Sofia. Sofia is a role model in a more unconscious way for Celie then Shug is. Sofia's whole appearance and behaviour is proud, she lets no one sit on her and Celie is, at first, jealous of Sofia's self-confidence and tries to destroy it by giving her husband Harpo the advice to beat her to make her obedient; "I think about this when Harpo ast me what he ought to do to make her mind. [---] I think bout how every time I jump when Mr. _____ call me, she [Sofia] look surprise. And like she pity me. Beat her. I say"2. When this does not work, Celie realises that Sofia is someone to become more alike, not someone to destroy.
Nettie felt lost in her letters when she did not receive letters back from Celie. However, when Celie does write back to her, there is a sense of fulfillment surrounding her. Likewise, when Celie was finally able to read Nettie's letters to her, there was also a sense of fulfillment surrounded her. In the end, Nettie returns home and only then does the fulfillment fully surround the two sisters. The letters were what were keeping them so close, yet so apart.
This is an external conflict as men constantly use her and throw her around like a toy. Her own Pa rapes her and impregnates her twice. Later on, when Mr.__ seeks to marry Nettie, her Pa offers Celie instead. Mr.__ finally decides to take Celie, as his children need a mother. Thus, Celie finds herself in a loveless and abusive marriage, since Mr. hits her quite often.
Rather than apologizing for his cruel actions against Nettie, he wanted to punish her instead. While Celie emotionally deals with Mr.____’s wrongdoing, Shug attempts to calm Celie down by being with her through her struggles. Surprisingly, Shug acts as the motherly figure and role model Celie never had. Instead of relying on the silence like Celie has done in the past, she now relies on Shug for advice and independence. The numerous letters Celie found from Nettie not only gives her hope, but also reassurance.
You mad cause he don’t seem to listen to your prayers.” Shug’s encouraging words help Celie to regain faith in god. This then allows her to realize that she was only mad at god because she thought he was a man, and to come to the conclusion that men are the real ones who have caused suffering in her life. Beyond all of this, Shug is also able to attract Celie sexually and show her that sex does not have to be a painful experience, but instead it should be a feeling of freedom and joy. This is the first time Celie experiences true love, and Shug reciprocates the feelings allowing Celie to finally realize her own self worth.
Celie is immediately introduced to the audience as a young fourteen year old girl with no ambition and many questions about her purpose in the world. She questions God by constantly writing him letters. She believes she is a good girl and does not understand why so much pain exists in her world. She lives with a daily fear of her father and with the constant reminder that “[she] better not never tell nobody but God. It 'd kill
1. The biggest choice Celie made was to move to Tennessee for a period of time. This turned out well because she became more confident about herself. She built a pants making company and stopped relying on her friends. Although she did not realize that she was not moving until Shug announced that “Us leaving… Celie is coming to Memphis with me” (199), Celie was grateful for leaving her husband and the toxicity of the environment. She learned to fend for herself and reflected on her past. By having free time to come to terms with all the experiences she had, Celie understood that they helped her build character and influenced her decision to stand up for herself.
In the beginning, Celie is a very confused young girl she does not understand what is happening to her or why. Most of all she does not understand why she is only fourteen years old and already on her second pregnancy. As Celie grows older she starts realizing the situation that she is in. Celie and her younger sister Nettie soon come across this man whom Celie refers to as “Mr._____”. The sisters come to find out that this Mr.____ has an interest in marrying Nettie. However, Celie and Nettie's father refuse to give Nettie away stating that she is far too young instead he he offers him Celie.
Through tough times we all have someone we look up to, because we admire their strength.. For Celie, a very important character in this story, the person with all this strength was Shug Avery. Back in that time girls were taken for granted and seen as housewives’ at a very young age and often abused because they refused to give their “husbands” any kind of sexual desires, because they were too young to understand what was fully going on. Our main character, Celie looked up to
For most of the book, Celie, is a powerless being that just goes along with what everyone else wants her to do. She takes the beatings Mr._____ gives her and doesn’t do anything to try to defend herself. She just goes through the motions and doesn’t feel or appreciate anything until Shug and Sofia come along. Shug is strong, independent and beautiful, everything Celie wishes she could be. She makes her own money, she has various gentlemen callers and does what she wants when she wants. Also she is not afraid to stand up to Mr.______. Those are things that Celie has never been
