How Does Fixed and Growth Mindsets Influence Your Learning?
One cannot mention fixed and growth mindset without mentioning Carol Dweck, whom most of the research and our understanding of these terms comes from. Mindset according to Dweck “is a collection of thought and beliefs that shape your thought habits and your thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do. Your mind-set impacts how you make sense of the world, and how you make sense of you. Believing that you are either “intelligent” or “unintelligent” is a simple example of a mindset”. The two basic mindset that shape the way people think and live are the fixed and the growth mindset. The individual with a fixed mindset believe that their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success, you either are born with a great deal of knowledge and ability or you are not and there’s not much of anything that you can do to change that (Dweck, Carol). So if someone believe they are not smart enough they usually shy away from things that may seem difficult to them or in some cases won’t even try all.

In school, at the stores, anywhere, there are two types of people that can be encountered. What makes these two types of people different is their mindsets. One type has the mindset of a pessimist; they think they cannot do certain tasks and are afraid of looking stupid. The other type has the mindset of an optimist; they always try new things and are not scared to do so. In the article “Brainology” by Carol S. Dweck, she states that there are two different mindsets that people can possess, either a fixed mindset (pessimist) or a growth mindset (optimist); these mindsets are developed at a young age and will influence a person’s choices and opportunities.
In regards to learning, students with the mentality have a theory that everyone was born with a certain IQ; smart folks were naturally born smart, and the imbecile ones were forever imbecile. In fact, students who possess a fixed mindset would falsely believe that they are not smart enough to complete difficult tasks, or to fulfill class's expectation (Dweck 1). This creates anxiety whenever students encounter academic tasks. Eventually, being fearful leads to failure in achieving one's mission. Dweck further asserts “This means that every time something is hard for them and requires effort, it's both a threat and a bind. If they work hard at it that means that they aren't good at it, but if they don't work hard they won't do well.” (Dweck 2). She points out that a fixed-minded person would think that if one is smart enough, then one would not have to go through any hardships, and that seeing a task as being difficult meaning one lacks the capability to achieve it. In broader sense, this trait generates a negative-thinking mentality and hence discourages students to exploit their academic potential. Fixed mindset, therefore, is not a trait that students would want to develop. What Dweck is trying to promote, in the article, is encouraging students to steer their ways of thinking to that of growth mindset
I’m going to tell you how student learn these mindsets. In the 90s parents thought the most important thing that you child should have was self-esteem. But were they messed up is that you cant just hand your kids self-esteem. They took a poll among parents and found that 85% of parents thought that it was necessary to “praise” their children’s abilities to boost confidence. Now were going to talk about growth mindset. These students believe that intelligence is something that can be gained through education and effort. I wish in high school that I would of taken it more serious because now I could have had a growth mindset witch would of helped me out a lot in college. Those students have growth mindsets. They believe that you can gain intelligence through learning. Those with a growth mindset had a very straightforward idea of effort. The idea that the harder you work the greater the outcome is and I think that’s true. When these students had a set back in school they simply just study more or differently next time. That was my biggest set back in high school. Many bright students find grade school fairly easy and get right through it. But later on in life like in college they struggle. They don’t want to put the time into something and feel dumb when they get a bad grade on it. That’s bad because you should never feel dumb about something that you tried your hardest to complete. It’s so cliché, but now I know that there is so much truth behind it. “Believe in yourself.” Rather than giving up on yourself, use your failures to make you better. According to Carol Dweck, research psychologist, in her book Mindset, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.” It wasn’t until the summer between my junior and senior year of high school that I learned this and of course I learned it the hard way. I had played club basketball for four summers in a row with the Longmont Rush basketball club. I loved the game of basketball and I had spent countless hours working on my skills on the court. I even wanted to play in college. I already had schools scouting me. Unfortunately, in my final season, just before my senior year, my biggest fear came true.
It’s difficult to be a successful author in today’s day and age, as there is competition everywhere, and it is easy to be drowned out, no matter how hard you try to put your name out into the world. Generally we tend to think of success as how much money an author makes or how well known they are among the common populace. However, true success should be defined by the quality of the story, regardless of how many people know it, and the satisfaction of having written it, regardless of how much it made. It takes a willingness to grow and to work hard to achieve literary success and notoriety. A successful author develops a growth mindset through the education and life experience they receive from their younger years into adulthood. Carol Dweck in Ken Bain’s What the Best College Students Do, describes a growth mindset as having a mastery perspective, “they believe that they can master something and grow in their abilities if they try. If they don’t succeed, they look for new strategies rather than deciding they ‘just can’t do it.’...Mastery students think abilities can expand. The helpless they’re fixed (Bain 109).” A growth mindset and strong ethos is critical to the success of authors as is demonstrated in the lives and works of Richard Adams, Dan Abnett and Hunter S. Thompson.

Children who possess a fixed mindset are likely to attribute their success to pure luck and their failures to ability or lack thereof. This is also known as learned helplessness. Children with a growth mindset, however, have a contrasting perspective. They believe abilities can be improved over time with an input of effort. The problem with this "fixed mindset" is that when things get difficult, kids who have been praised for performing smart, become insecure. They will believe that because they do not know the answer, they are not smart. This causes them to run away from challenges and fail to apply themselves. A person's attitude towards their level of intelligence determines their potential growth. Having a fixed mindset inhibits your intellectual growth, though believing intelligence is a potential, you are focused and motivated to apply yourself to difficult tasks in order to grow.

In 2006, Carol Dweck published her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. In her book, Dweck (2016) introduced the terms fixed and growth mindset and renewed an educational mindset. A growth mindset is a thought process that can be learned and essentially means that individuals never stop learning and growing. Furthermore, individuals are in charge of their learning. Although this mindset is not limited to the education field, it is highly regarded in education, as this is a field where growth is the key element to learning.
“The Growth Mindset” by Rona Elisa talks about the difference between people with a fixed mindset and a growth mindset and how to overcome from fixed to growth mindset. People with a fixed mindset believe that their basic traits and skills are permanent and that it is a natural talent. By reading the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success people are able to determine if they are fixed-mind set or growth mind set. There are many people across the world who are fixed-mind set and believe that their abilities and intelligence cannot change. They dwell on the problems at hand and fail to recognize alternative ways to solve them. This group tends to have low self-esteem so they will prove themselves to others so they can feel superior academically or skilled related. If they fail at their task, they become more concerned with other’s thoughts, which diverges them from the actual objective. On the other hand, growth mind set is completely different from fixed-mind set. Growth mind set is someone who accepts the problem and thinks of a positive or useful way to fix the issue. This person believes that their strengths and weakness can grow with time and practice. These two mind sets help scientists explain why people act differently when faced with the same difficult situation.
