I believe it is possible to repeat the past. There are millions of scenarios that you could repeat, and history repeats itself. So, why couldn’t you force past to repeat itself? However, Gatsby repeated the past in a horrible way. Being ripped away from Daisy, and thrown into war. Gatsby then left the war, and was thrown into Oxford. Daisy became tireless in waiting, and eventually married Tom. Five years later, Gatsby and Daisy finally get a second chance to meet, and I’m sure Gatsby was as taken back and as nervous as he was the first time. History has already began to repeat itself, as they slowly fall back into each other's arms. They become nearly inseperable, and things eventually begin to spiral out of control. Between arguments with …show more content…
Her and Tom fled the area, and Gatsby once again, this time forever, lost Daisy, and the past had been repeated. Five years ago, I lived in a small town similar to where I do now, only I lived with both of my parents. 7th grade, at this time I was happy. I was content with my life. My family was important, going fishing and playing video games with my step dad. We had a nice routine going, and I was happy with it. It is impossible for me to repeat these things. These bridges have been burned, and our backs have been turned to each other. While repeating them may bring a content of which I do not feel now, the past has made me who I am today. This I cannot change. The feelings that we feel, and the words that we have said; the scars that have healed, and that still fester. These things are what represent the past, and these things cannot be repeated. There was a time when I would have repeated them, and there was a time when maybe these things would not have needed to be repeated. They would not be the same anyways, for it has already happened. You can go through something 100 times, and it does not change what happened the first
Before the world war had started, Gatsby was already in the period of time where he was courting Daisy. However after the war, Gatsby extends his period over time in order to obtain a socially acceptable rank in order to marry Daisy. It was during this period of extending time that Daisy fell under the pressure of her family to marry Tom Buchanan. When Gatsby returns to the United States, he realizes that he had lost Daisy and then proceeds to further increase his social status through bootlegging in the guise of drugstores. It is then during this period that Gatsby wants to erase the five years of time during which he was gone, from not only his life, but also Daisy’s. When Nick retorts to Gatsby’s idea, he exclaims to him “‘Can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’”(Fitzgerald, 110). Near the end of the novel, Gatsby is invited along with Nick to the Buchanon’s for lunch, there, Gatsby sees Daisy and Tom’s child for the first time and Nick describes it as genuine surprise and that he believes that Gatsby “never believed in its existence before” (Fitzgerald, 117). The introduction of Daisy’s daughter
Themes of hope, success, and wealth overpower The Great Gatsby, leaving the reader with a new way to look at the roaring twenties, showing that not everything was good in this era. F. Scott Fitzgerald creates the characters in this book to live and recreate past memories and relationships. This was evident with Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship, Tom and Daisy’s struggling marriage, and Gatsby expecting so much of Daisy and wanting her to be the person she once was. The theme of this novel is to acknowledge the past, but do not recreate and live in the past because then you will not be living in the present, taking advantage of new opportunities.
After a while, one must start to change these memories, such as the ones of Daisy. As evidenced by the text Daisy becomes a, “colossal vitality of his illusion” (Fitzgerald 95). In the midst of the negative and violent war, she became paradisiacal in his mind as he longed for her, which therefore perfected her image. In the meantime, like any other human being, Daisy is changing while Gatsby is in the war and moving on with her life. This means that Gatsby’s new idolized image of Daisy will not be accurate when they meet again.
A major internal conflict in this novel is between Gatsby and his past. Gatsby’s desire and purpose to return the past time when he and Daisy might had a future together. Gatsby strongly believes that he can reiterate the past and when Nick is trying to explain him that he cannot do this he refuses to believe that he cannot repeat the past.
Jay Gatsby said “Can’t repeat the past?…Why of course you can!” This simple quote, stated while speaking of his relationship with daisy encompasses his endless efforts in re kindling his past love. He is so invested in fighting for Daisy because he truly believes that the past can be brought back. As if there is no Tom, no child and no responsibilities. The past willingly leads us into the trap of ignorance, that we may return from journeys long and messy to find
It is impossible to repeat the past simply because we cannot unseen or un-feel the way we once did in the past. Gatsby wanted Daisy to repeat the past with him because to him, she was his greatest accomplishment. He wanted to keep that feeling forever but time changes everything, and no matter how much time passes nothing is ever the same again. Gatsby had this vision that him and Daisy could live out their lives acting like nothing ever happened and that would have been fine with him but Daisy had moved onto loving a new man and also had a child.
It’s hard to keep moving forward when your mind is so stuck in the past. The Great Gatsby is a story written by F.Scott Fitzgerald, the perspective of this book is written through the eyes of Nick, a middle class citizen that lives next to huge mansions, one of which belongs to a Mr. Jay Gatsby. After being invited to a party Nick becomes friends with Gatsby and he soon learns that Mr. Gatsby is actually in love with Nick's cousin, Daisy. The story continues with Nick observing how Gatsby goes about getting Daisy’s attention and how their relationship plays through. Throughout the story it is made clear that Jay Gatsby is hung up on the past that he once shared with Daisy, and it’s affecting life negatively because he
Daisy and Tom were not interested in his parties. When Daisy’s cousin, Nick, moves to the home next to Gatsby, it opens up a whole new door. Gatsby gets the help of Nick to make them cross paths again. Their first reunion in five years changed Gatsby, “he literally glowed; without a word or gesture of exultation a new well-being radiated from him and filled the room (Fitzgerald, 94).” But his goal would never be fulfilled. Upon asking Daisy to proclaim her love to him in front of Tom but she can’t. Diasy loves Tom and she loved Gatsby but that’s just the point, the past is the past and can’t be relived. Gatsby never got another chance to winning Daisy over. After everything cooled down Gatsby began waiting for Daisy to call him, but that would never happen. He was shot a killed at is mansion before he ever got to talk to Daisy
Fitzgerald believes that the people who pursue the American Dream are never satisfied because they always strive for something more, he shows this through the motif of time. Gatsby is desperate to be back with Daisy, his dream is for him to win Daisy back and have things be like the old times were Tom wasn't a part of Daisy's life: "'Can't repeat the past?'...'Why of course you can!'"(110). Nick unsuccessfully tried to make Gatsby understand the fact that Daisy had moved on, she that she is married, and even has a daughter, he tells Gatsby that he couldn't repeat the past, Gatsby refuses to believe him. Gatsby says that time itself is obsolete if you have tons of money like him, he can make anything happen even repeat the past. At what point
Some may not be able to recreate the past, that this won't stop Gatsby and his desires for what he once had. Many forms of evidence can be found throughout the book, that reference Gatsby and his desire for the
In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby announces, “You can’t repeat the past.” Innumerable amounts of people have stated that, history always repeats itself. Nick assumes that Gatsby’s appalling sentimentality has formed Daisy into a mere image of supremacy. Then in retrospect, history shall only create a portal of itself, if we do allow it. So as we deposit our minds into this dissertation, allow yourself to think among this statement.
While driving Gatsby’s car Daisy hits and kills her husbands mistress. Gatsby takes the blame for the death of the woman, only to be shot by said woman’s husband. Living in the past leads you to nothing but tragedy. The past is a reoccurring theme throughout “The Great Gatsby,” and for most of the characters it only causes misery. At one point in the book Nick tells Gatsby “you can’t live in the
Reader Response to The Great Gatsby The past is full of feelings, emotions and events—however, these are just as their label suggests: passed. Jay Gatsby wants nothing more than to have the love he lost with Daisy Buchanan, but he does not realize that their time apart and the things that have happened to her since their parting prevent him from doing this. The past can affect the future, but only if it is held onto and remembered.
Things that no one else in the world would have memories about, except for us. That’s why I love nostalgia, I can cherish those moments and take them with
Everyone’s past can have some bumps in the road that can result in misery, regret but also happiness. But it can also play an important role
