Hobbes Hobbes is a difficult philosopher to just pinpoint and label in my understanding. He said that he accomplished the impossible when talking about math. His contribution to philosophy was that he took apart Descartes dualist approach by saying that the mind does not exist. To Hobbes what exists are the things that make up reality, that move. He is said to be a pessimist due to his psychology to altruism. The most well know Hobbes contribution was in psychology. Hobbes believed that “all human acts are motivated by self-interest and the quest to power.” (page 190) He believed that every deed we do is done only if we get to benefit from it. Hobbes held a very pessimistic view on people due to this. Personally, I don’t agree with him completely. Hobbes’ psychological egoism takes a negative outlook on humanity, and sort of reverts back to primal days where we would fight for survival. He used the egoist theory and also contrasted the state with nature. He instilled that fear of anarchy in the people of the state in order to legitimize it. Anarchy he described it as animal like and selfish and that people had “the right to protect oneself using any means at one’s disposal using violence and slaughter.” (page 192) This is a scare tactic and I’m sure people fell for it easily because it seems reasonable. Hobbes “social contract” was also his way of fixing this issue of anarchy. What this social contract is the agreement between two opposing people that cannot help but not trust one another. This lack of trust leads to discomfort for both parties, so in order to make everything normal and comfortable again both sides must give absolute power to a third person to put their worries to rest. Thus, Hobbes concluded that even if the third power does become corrupt due to their egoism it “was better than the alternative- the horrors of anarchy.” (page
