This song relates to the story as Holden sneaks into his house to see Phoebe. Phoebe is very excited to see Holden because they are indeed very close. The song expresses the feeling of being excited to see someone you miss in which this is displayed clearly by Phoebe missing Holden as he comes back to the house. In the story it says, “Holden! she said right away. She put her arms around my neck and all. She’s very affectionate. I mean she’s quite affectionate, for a child” (161). This explains the instant happiness Phoebe had to get to see Holden. It was apparent that Holden missed Phoebe too because leading up to this time he had nothing but good things to say about Phoebe. This all relates back to the song which describes how happy artist
In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden is a rather unique character. He has several complications with other characters that he runs into, and does not seem that he is able to relate to anyone. However, Holden has a younger sister named Phoebe, and he seems to connect with her in a way that he does not with anyone else. She is only ten years old, so she and Holden both have a childlike mind. On the other hand, Phoebe seems to have a positive outlook on life while Holden sees most things in a negative light. Another contrast between them is that Phoebe puts in effort at school, and Holden is clearly not concerned his performance at school.
This song speaks volumes as to what Holden is trying to find in life. He wants to be happy, but he is often depressed with his life. In the story it is revealed that the museum is his indeed “happy place”. In the story it reads “I get very happy when I think about it. Even now” (120). Holden admires the fact that nothing in the Museum changes and wishes that the museum could represent how his life would go. Simple, and manageable all characteristics he wishes he could trace into his real life. The song brings this all together because no matter how long it’s been since Holden’s last visit it still gives him the same spark of happiness as the last time. Being happy is definitely the main point of this
First, Phoebe acts as a confidante for Holden by showing the reader Holden’s true emotions and thoughts. Phoebe reveals his moods of happiness and depression and why he feels the way he does. When Phoebe is on the carousel, Holden “felt so damn happy all of sudden[because] the way old Phoebe kept going around and around.[Holden]was damn near bawling, [He] felt so damn
This song is significant to this chapter because Holden talks about his ambitions and the troubles hes gone through in his past and this song is just about going after what you want in life and not stopping along the way and that represents Holden a lot.
❖ This song relates to a very specific scene in the book. This is the scene when Holden watches Phoebe on the carousel, and suddenly everything seems to be alright in the world. “I felt so damn happy all of a sudden, the way old Phoebe kept going around and around. I was damn near bawling, I felt so damn happy, if you want to know the truth.” Just like Allie was one of Holden’s favorite people in the world, Phoebe holds an enormous place in his heart. Her innocence gives him hope for the world.
Once he finally gets the courage to see her, he soon plans to run away having a sense of defeat from seeing the “Fuck You” written on the walls of her school. Holden sees that and realizes that he can’t stop Phoebe from growing up and takes the easy route of running away. However, when Phoebe says she wants to come with him, Holden’s character has a turning point. Instead of walking away he tells Phoebe that he’ll stay at home with her, which I believe is something his character would have never done earlier in the novel. I took this point as Holden finally growing up and caring for others, rather than making everything about him. He later attempts to bring innocence back into his sister but taking her to the museum as well as letting her ride carousel. The carousel scene is heavily symbolic to the story because Holden finally gets what he wanted during the whole novel; to preserve innocence. Phoebe is having a great time going around on the carousel as he is wearing his red hunting hat that acts of protection to him. I find this to be a perfect ending to “The Loss of Innocence’ theme that J.D Salinger
In “The Catcher in the Rye,” Holden Caulfield narrates the novel and he has a sister named Phoebe. Holden and his sister, Phoebe compare and contrast in many ways. Holden and Phoebe are of different ages and have many different interests. An easy comparison between the two in the novel is that Holden is a male and Phoebe is a female. There are many more differences beyond this simple one.
Not only does Holden feel great affection for Phoebe, Phoebe feels great affection for Holden as well. It isn't too hard to understand that she and Holden are especially close since one of their brothers is dead and the other lives miles from their home. It is also surprising on how quickly Phoebe realizes that Holden came home earlier than expected. It is obvious that Phoebe is much more mature and articulate for her age to realize something like that so quickly. It is as if she is Holden's older sister instead of the younger one.
Holden and Phoebe share very similar and different qualities. Holden is very mellow, and we get the sense that he isn’t all there. The heavy burden of the loss of his brother Allie affects him greatly. On the other hand, there is Phoebe. She is always up and energetic like your typical ten year old.
I chose to write about Holden and Phoebe Caulfield. Holden Caulfield is a Gemini and
Holden symbolizes his maturation when sits on the park bench while watching Phoebe because adults mainly sit on the bench when watching their children ride merry-go-rounds. Holden also feels for the first time, acceptance from someone he cares about but what Holden still fails to realize is that Holden’s family, in particular, Phoebe accepts him for himself from the very beginning. Phoebe gives Holden a kiss, signaling another instance of acceptance from someone he loves. However, these acts of love were not immediately recognized until he sees Phoebe riding the carousel from the bench in the rain.
Throughout the entire novel, Holden searches for the simplicity of childhood in the adult world. Holden wants to hold on to this innocence and never wants to grow up. He wants to stop the time, so that children do not have to grow up. In his world full of “phonies”, he considers Phoebe as a place of mental shelter, who symbolizes the purity of childhood. Phoebe helps him realize the truth of life, which is that everyone has to go through the transition period and experience the reality of life.
Holden opens up to a few people one of the being sally. Holden sets up a date with her even though he does not like her that much he asks to take her to a play which he also doesn't enjoy but sally likes plays so he asked her to see one with him. He is trying to reach out to someone for help. He needs someone to talk to and share his issues with. He does not want to talk to many people so he does not have any way of telling someone about his troubles. They seem to let him down because with Phoebe his mom picks up the phone or he meets one of Phoebes friends but not Phoebe. With other people and girls he never ends up meeting up with them something is always in the way and blocking them from talking. I believe that these interactions show that
In the novel The Catcher In The Rye written by: J.D Salinger. The novel is a very interesting book to read. Holden is the main character in the novel. He is 17 years old and he travels many places in New York. Holden also has a little sister named Phoebe. She is 10 years old. She is bright pretty and mature she is also a caring girl for her age. I will be writing about how Holden and Phoebe's relationship is in the novel.
“My Girl” by The Temptations relates the most to Holden and his younger sister, Phoebe, whom he adores very much. Holden feels that his whole family has left him, and the only relationship that he feels he can rely on is Phoebe. She seems to be the only character with whom Holden has a positive and somewhat stable relationship with, but he does not see her until the end of the novel when he visits her in secret. Holden constantly feels that the world is filled with phonies, and he feels that Phoebe is the only genuine person in his life because she is innocent and pure. “My Girl” describes the comfort and happiness of being with the person you care most about and we see Holden is in need of being with the person who can comfort him, and help
