Power of Words Essay- The Book Thief We use words every day of our life, yet we don’t seem to realize how much power or influence they can really have on us. In the book thief, Markus Zusak uses words to create a sense of comfort and sanity in a time of chaos and war. Words are used to strongly influence people and their decisions. When Liesel learned to read she was more intelligent and had more power to influence; “once words had rendered Liesel useless, but now, when she sat on the floor, with the mayor's wife at her husband’s desk, she felt an innate sense of power” (Zusak 147). In Nazi Germany, Hitler uses words to control the people. This is one way words can be used to hurt people. Liesel and Max both come from broken homes and can’t read. When they learn to read they have power. Liesel didn’t …show more content…
When she is able to read, she realizes what’s going on in the world around her. Words have the ability to bring people together or tear them apart. Hans and Liesel form a bond through their long nights of reading; “With a smile like that, you don’t need eyes”(Zusak 68). This relationship is the only reason Liesel is able to settle into her new home well. Their relationship shows how words have the power to bring people together. Words have the ability to calm people and bring peace. During the raid at the bomb shelter, Liesel begins to read from “the whistler”,”For at least twenty minutes she handed out the story. The youngest kids were soothed by her voice and everyone else saw visions of the whistler running from the crime scene”(Zusak 381). Although a story about a whistling murderer is not exactly the most soothing story during war, it somehow brought peace and joy to the people. Words were able to bring joy to the people in Germany, a place where joy was not very common. While words can help people, they can also hurt them. Words can be used to manipulate people. Having a strong vocabulary can give someone a big advantage
Language has the power to inform and persuade.A story and a passage may give you the power to do something effective. Language is a strong weapon that is used for and against many people. The article , ”Walking with Living feet,” is a strong brief example of an informative writing .A speech can also be an effective tool used to push people to make a difference at times, for example Elie Wiesel’s speech.
In The Book Thief, Liesel Meminger is a caring person. When her foster father, Hans Hubermann, is lecturing Liesel about not telling anyone that they are hiding a jew named Max in their basement; Liesel starts crying. Hans tell her that if she speaks of Max, himself and Liesel’s foster mother Rosa, will be taken away and they will never come back. Liesel starts bawling at this point in the lecture. This shows how much she really cares about her family. Liesel cares about the people that she loves and their presence in her life. Liesel cares about others and fights for justice when she sees someone being treated unfairly. One example of this is when Liesel stands up for Rudy when she sees Victor beating him up and giving him a bloody nose.
Reluctance or stubbornness in ending impulsive actions can have consequences. In the Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger’s inability to halt her dangerous habits put her and others’ lives in dangerous situations. Three main examples of Liesel’s dangerous activities are when she steals books, when she demonstrates kindness at improper times, and when she disrespects others for her own selfish reasons. In all these examples, there is always one moment where Liesel places her or others in harm’s way and narrowly escapes punishment.
Words have the power to change the lives of millions, people who take a stand speak for others and fight for what they want. Words have the power to provoke action, calm negative emotions and can inspire change as the following passages will elaborate that words have the power to change people. Events that go into history start with powerful speeches that persuade listeners to fight with them.
Max Vandenburg, who was a very supportive boy of Liesel, always helped her during her worst times and even her best times. Max had missed Liesel’s 12th birthday so he made her a little gift. He took a book called Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler, but made it his own called The Standover Man. He gave this book to Liesel as it symbolizes how people have always stood over him in his life to help him just like Liesel has. “During that week, Max had cut out a collection of pages from Mein Kampf and painted over them in white. He then hung them up with pegs on some string, from one end of the basement to the other … Only then, on the paper that had bubbled and humped under the stress of drying paint, did he begin to write the story. It was done with a small black paintbrush” (Zusak 223). This quote reflects the power of words because Max is doing this for Liesel since they are good friends, and since it's her birthday. This comes to show that Max is about positive words towards his friends, but mainly Liesel.
The words provided the power to impact people to fight, suffer, and become emotional. Specially, the Martin Luther King Jr, Robert Kennedy, and in story of To Kill a Mockingbird has created and impacted people in several ways by using the power of words. Although, the words be powerless sometimes the words once required actions and technique to be emotional, logical, or credibility. Even though the words can lose effectiveness, the words have the power to provoke, calm, or inspire by making actions together and persuade others from use of rhetoric.
An incredibly important aspect in the Book Thief are books. The books are used for the plot of the book but also they were used as a symbol for many things including Liesel’s ability to read and write, Liesel’s character, and Liesel’s ability to use words during the story. The first aspect that books symbolize in The Book Thief is Liesel’s ability to read and write. Close to the beginning of the story, Liesel found The Gravedigger’s Handbook during her brother’s funeral.
Words: Words are something we use everyday to communicate. Words make up sentences and books. We use words to convey meanings, to show feelings, and to communicate. The problem is that most people take this for granted. Most people do not know the power their words have, and the effect they have on other people. The power of words holds a strong meaning in the novel, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. During the book, different characters acquire power through their words and language, in both positive and negative ways.
Words were what started the roller coaster of emotion Liesel had been thrown on when she was nine years old. Without them I don't know where she would be, but I doubt she'd have ever lived and played soccer on Himmel Street. And, although words have been the cause of her pain and suffering, they have been her source of comfort, too. Whether they were written by Mattheus Ottleberg, Adolf Hitler, Max Vandenburg, or herself, words carry immeasurable value and impact. When written by Hitler, words have been the source of ruthless violence and chaos, and helped start a war that was the basis of our story. In The Word Shaker, Max shares his knowledge of the power of words, and how, depending on their user's intentions, they can have a heavily negative or positive impact. This quote shows Liesel's comprehension of the power of words, and when she says "I hope I have made them right," it is clear that she intends to use words so they will have a positive
Language is very powerful and can be used in a good, uplifting way or a negative, controlling way. Language is more powerful when used to uplift and inspire. In George Orwell’s book Animal Farm, the animals take over to try to make a better society and life for themselves where the pig rule. One of the leaders of the farm, Napoleon, drives out the other leader, Snowball because he was greedy and power corrupt. Eventually after years of running the farm the pigs turn into how the humans were. They drank, took all the food and never worked. Martin Luther King JR's ‘I have a Dream’ speech and John F. Kennedy’s inaugural speech are more examples of how language can uplift. In the book, Animal Farm, there are many examples about how language
Life Is Shaped Through Strength In The Weakest Times Sometimes in life things get hard and it becomes difficult to push through and stay strong. There are some things you can do to help get through the difficult times, for example, having an escape from it all, or not giving up and staying strong. One important thing is not to let the little things bother you and turn into bigger things. Some of the characters from The Book Thief do these things to help overcome problems that they are going through.
The power words are limitless. It does not matter in what language one speaks; persuasion is the key to manipulated people for good or bad. “Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill.” Words are a weapon, and when one uses words carefully to persuade people, it can lead to chaos. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare portrays a universal theme in which friends and enemies turn to against each other, and a war stimulates out of lies and ambition for power. The usage of old and wise words to manipulated people lead to great revelry.
Are we ever going to get out of this nightmare and survive? This question was being asked all around the world, but especially by Liesel and her family. Liesel is the main character of “The Book Thief.” Her and her family lived in Germany, where Nazis were dominant. She was very reserved, introverted, and non-outgoing, but her personality was about to change drastically. Liesel started stealing books. The first book she stole was the gravedigger's handbook, which she??? dropped at her brother's funeral. This marked the beginning of Liesel deceiving her family. The central idea of “The Book Thief” is stealing, which is going to flip Liesel’s world upside down. As the book continues, Liesel’s experiences during World War II are revealed.
Words, something we blindly hear, listen and feel. Humans do not think twice of the harm or good doing power they possess. In the novel, The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, shows how words can give the characters such robustness during the war. As well as how strong they use their words so they can get out of difficult situations. Adolf Hitler, Max Vandenburg, and Liesel Meminger are characters that hold power throughout the novel in both positive and negative ways.
After losing her mother and her brother, Liesel’s life and identity is changed drastically many times. It is through books that she discovers and becomes comfortable with this change. When she first meets Hans and Rosa Hubermann, her new foster parents, she does not wish to speak with them or get to know them. However, once Hans discovers Liesel with the book she stole when her brother was buried, The Gravedigger’s Manual, they bond over Hans teaching Liesel to read. Liesle describes the first time her and Hans have a lesson in the middle of the night: “She had done this at school, in the kindergarten class, but this time was better. … It was nice to watch Papa’s hand as he wrote the words and slowly constructed the primitive sketches” (Zusak
